Z-Train Goes To Spain

Hi Everyone!

It has now been seven weeks since my first arrival in Spain. I've been to many incredible places so far and will continue to write about them so as long as I feel like I have something interesting to share...España is a country I have always dreaming of traveling to, and now that I've been here for 2 and 1/2 months, it's starting to feel like my new home away from home! As of this past December, I just graduated with a Bachelor's of Music Performance from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Along with my experience performing at IU, I also received a minor in Spanish. I hope you all will visit my blog every once and a while to see a little bit of the places I go to (and I will do my best to keep it updated!). Wishing all of you other travelers (and non-travelers) out there all the best!

Cheers,
~Zach

'Salam Alaikum' from Spain!! Snake-charmers, acrobats, story-tellers, camels, musicians, and burqas; all fit perfectly into anyone's pre-conception of traditional Morocco...I know, I know...there's kind of this conflict in North Africa going on at the moment...But you have to realize that what you're probably seeing through your American television sets is not at all an accurate representation of the whole...In fact, Morocco remains just about the only Mediterranean North African country that isn't in complete disarray from political protests. Though there have been some recent peaceful demonstrations within the country in regards to justice, work and health coverage, things there remain (relatively) calm, as the king is highly respected. Morocco was colonized by the French in the early 20th century, so there is a significant use of French as a second language (outside of Arabic and B ... read more

Again, it has been quite a while since my last post, but I'll keep writing and sharing as long as things stay interesting (which they almost always are!). Among the things one thinks about in terms of immersing oneself in a particular place, the most obvious thing that comes to mind is of course the language! However, this trip has shown me quite a bit more about Spain culturally than just your typical Spanish idioms. Though, aside from your typical idea of what stereotypical Spain might be, everything else one might encounter is very much...American. Going to any mall/grocery store feels like I have been magically transported back to Texas. The general atmosphere is the same, you have your Fast Food section, your typical preppy, Abercrombie-like stores and the occasional 'we buy gold' sections...The grocery stores ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country January 30th 2011

Once again hello from Navarra, Spain. I'm sitting at the house alone, since the musician I'm staying with won't be back for about another week...so I figured I might blog about my last few days before I ended up here in Tajonar, a small community with in Navarra. After my time in Seville, I headed back to the airport to fly to Bilbao, one of the main cities of Basque country in the north. Once again, though the entire country alone is actually 300.000 kilometers smaller than Texas, traveling the equivalent distance of Dallas to Austin feels culturally like going from Dallas to LA or Miami...Basque Country (also known as Euskadi in Basque and País Vasco in Spanish) is, like Barcelona in Catalunya, really a country in its own. It boarders the northern coast of Spain ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville January 27th 2011

My third city within Spain was to Seville, within the autonomous region of Andalucía in the south. Andalucía was the base for Muslim invaders in the early 700's, who fled onto the peninsula from Africa. Seville was the leading city of Islamic Spain from the 11th until the 13th centuries, followed by Granada, and it wasn't until 1492 (yes, of course also known for Columbus' expedition in which Seville was the starting point...) that the Arabs fell to the Catholic Monarchs, Fernando and Isabel. Seville is your stereotypical idea of Spanish culture...flamenco dancers, men in black sombreros (though I saw more of gothic/emo kids dressed in black clothing...), a matador unfurling his red cap within a bull ring, elaborate Islamic/Catholic architecture...all of these stereotypes coexist within a pretty modern city in which shopping and bar hopping ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona January 20th 2011

Hello family and friends! Before I go off on what I have been doing at the moment (we'll save that for another entry), allow me to go back a few days...ok maybe a week to my last few days in Barcelona which included my 22nd birthday. Barcelona is full of things to do and one week spent in the city really isn't enough time to see everything. I decided to travel up to the mountain on the north side of town. At the top of the mountain (which I found out upon arriving there) is an amusement park and the Tibidabo church, which you can take an elevator all the way to the top for an incredible view of Barcelona and the mountains surrounding it. To get there, the guide books tell you, you have to ... read more

Hello from Barcelona! Again, sorry for the late posts but I suppose I really am having too much fun...To start off let me just say that this trip has so far been as much a learning experience as it has been a vacation. The first two nights here were dreadful...After a long night in Madrid, I figured I might try to take a nap on the plane. So...I put my passport in the front pocket of the seat in front of me and took a very nice nap through the whole plane ride. As I left the plane, I was so zoned out from the nap that I forgot to take my passport out of the front pocket! And...after exiting the security area I soon realized my mistake. However, by the time anyone could do anything ... read more

Hello again everyone...and sorry for the late update (I know it drives my parents crazy not to hear from me). I suppose that my late reply reflects how busy I have been lately, but busy in a good way. Things have been great in Madrid and I have definitely made friends with the hostel goers who have been here since I have. It's kind of sad making friends here, only to see them go so quickly, however I suppose that's how things are with trips like this. Madrid has been nice, but the feel of the city is modern and quite frankly the only things to really do here are eat, drink, and look at paintings. So...I have heard so many incredible things about the neighboring city Toledo, which was the original capital of Spain until ... read more

It's day two in Madrid, which I must say has been quite a bit better than yesterday. I decided to sleep in a bit this morning (umm...drank too much and couldn't wake up early...sorry mom aren't you proud?). I started my morning...afternoon with a coffee and milk and a scrambled eggs and veal, then headed straight for the Palacio Real. The good thing about going to all of these places right after you graduate is you get a student discount, and since I still very much look like a student I have no problem getting discounts! The price to get into the Royal Palace was 3.50 euros, which was worth it despite the long line. The Royal Palace is emblematic of the old city and rests on the terrain where the Muslims built their fortresses in ... read more

I suppose I should give an introduction for the basis of (what is starting to seem like) a crazy trip I just started…It’s not every so often that you get to travel to a foreign country alone, but when you do I suppose one should take advantage of it. I planned this trip initially as sort of a random getaway and post-graduation expedition. However, it’s sort of turned into a part-time gig in which I’ll be performing with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, near Pamplona. David Thompson was very gracious to let me on as a substitute up there. So since I won’t be playing with the orchestra until February I’ve decided to get lost in the other cities within the country. First stop, Madrid…I arrived at the Madrid airport about two hours late, due to ... read more
