I woke early and checked out of the guesthouse and made my way to the main drag of Luang Prabang to the booking office. After dropping off my bag at the office, I decided it’d be best to grab some breakfast and a baguette for lunch on the road-the trip was going to take about 6 or 8 hours. On my way to the breakfast joint I met with Daniel and Rianne. After ordering a latte and a bagel sandwich for breakfast, the other two sat to wait for our order and I walked down to the place where I had ordered an amazing panini previously. I put in my order for take away and waited patiently for my delicious basil pesto, tomato, mozzarella Panini only to receive the wrong thing-I told them I didn’t want ... read more

After a great night out I woke early to check out and move closer to everyone. I arrived and checked into the cheapest room available. It was known as the ‘outside’ room, but the only sign of it being outside was a few gaps between the walls and the ceiling and at 30,000 kip-who could really complain!? It had a fairly large bed and though the bathroom was not in the room it was just down the stairs. Now that I was closer to everyone, I set out to meet up with them. We were hoping to check out a boat race in a village not far from there, or possibly go to one of the waterfalls in the surrounding area. After discussing our options we decided to just stick around the town for the day, ... read more

So I believe I left off in Thailand-wow-so this is a delayed blog but at least I’m getting there. I left Chiang Mai in the morning. A minibus(which is basically a minivan) picked me up from my hotel and we wondered up several little streets gathering the other travelers on their way to Laos. The entire ride to the border was a rollercoaster. We passed cars when it was probably advisable not to, and went around corners at speeds far too high. Grandma Lehman, if you read this, I was thinking about all the times you tell grandpa to slow down, and how you almost have a heart attack anytime someone other than you is driving-well, I’m afraid travel in SE Asia is just not cut out for you-at least not by any vehicle…you’ll have to ... read more

Onward to Chiang Mai…It was a VIP bus-though I didn’t find anything much better about it than the other bus I had taken. The only differences-it was a double decker bus, you were given a water and a little bag of snacks, and a so so meal at one of the stops. Nothing too VIP about it-I think the other bus was more comfortable too. So I spent the night travelling, and arrived in Chiang Mai around 5:00am. I was supposed to be picked up by a taxi and taken to my hotel, but when I got off there was no one standing there holding a sign with my name! I was a little frustrated and I had tuk tuk and taxi drivers coming up asking if I needed a ride and I had to say ... read more

Well where did I leave off?! Ah yes-I was leaving the fabulous island of Koh Phangan! The ride to Bangkok was long, but not too awful, although I almost didn’t make it for departure. Martin, the owner of the Rainbow Bungalows, lost track of the time, and instead of leaving 45min before departure we left 10min prior. Luckily we made it, a little hectic and unorganized, but all good in the end. The ferry was a speed ferry and their way of making the time pass was to play movies. Throughout the entire trip to Bangkok I think I saw a total of 5 ½ movies-mostly stupid ones, but it helped I guess. Once I arrived in Bangkok I decided to taxi my way to the hostel to avoid the hassle of public transit. I arrived ... read more

So my last night in Phuket consisted of a lot of unnecessary drinking and nonstop dancing. We had been invited to Clublime-a Swiss-owned foreigners club. It was 800baht for 1hr buffet, and 2hrs of open bar! Followed by free shots all night after 11pm. We: Iva, Denis, and myself, did our fair share of drinking at the club before a large group of us moved onward to Bangla Road, to the Tiger Club. Now for those who have never been to Phuket, Bangla Road is the main nightlife road-full of Thai hookers, ladyboys, and a bunch of old white men trying to act as though they are still in their prime youth(being ‘escorted’ by young Thai girls). Another popular happening-Ping Pong shows-this isn’t the kind of ping pong we typically play-I’ll just tell you this, it ... read more

Wow...that's all I can say. Thailand has been amazing thus far, and I can see how so many people come here and never leave. I arrived at Phuket airport in Thailand on Wednesday the 17th of September, only to be attacked with the never ending "TAXI"...hey you need TAXI, where you go, you want TAXI....NO!!!!! I didn't even know where I was going, so a taxi to anywhere was a big fat NO! You see I've been trying this couchsurfing thing, and the person I was suppose to stay with, I couldn't get a hold of, so I had to collect my thoughts and figure out where I was going. This was my first experience being somewhere and having absolutely no clue where I needed to be going...usually I have a hostel, or a house, or ... read more

Well, I realize I'm a slacker, but who has time for these things anyway! :P So I am in Singapore now...yay...I made it out of Seoul alive and with money in the bank! Though I must say the flight was not cheap, especially when there are so many discount airlines! The cost fell somewhere around $500USD...boo. I must say the treatment on the flight was quite enjoyable though. They give you hot towels to clean up with several times... throughout the flight, alcohol is a free beverage option, personal in flight TV entertainment with tons of movies, and the food...well it sucked as usual haha but all in all not too bad of a flight...I think I watched two and a half movies! I arrived in Singapore, went through customs no problem, grabbed my bag, found the ... read more

I've come to the conclusion that once in Seoul, the ultimate goal is to keep you here! Unless you already have planned a way out thoroughly, then you are in for a hit to the wallet. So the plan: Get to Seoul, find Chinese Embassy/Consular Office, apply for Chinese Visa, find cheap flight to Beijing, follow Silk Road into Nepal. The reality: Get to Seoul(so far so good), search for the Consular office and go to the wrong place so must wait until next day, start looking into flights to Beijing(no such thing as a cheap flight from Seoul), look into ferries to China, find one that is 24hrs and cheaper than flying and is rumored to offer visa processing on board, try to call for info. on getting visa on ferry but no English-speaking agents, ... read more
