The third time's the charm, at least for my personal attendance with NC State. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s talk about a week of firsts for me. Some of my faithful readers (or at least the ones who read last week’s post at Mercer) may be saying, “Hang on a minute. Weren’t you supposed to be at Oregon this weekend? Why are you in North Carolina?” That a fair question, and it has a painful answer. I left my wallet at home before I took the airport shuttle to ATL, and so I wasn’t going to be able to check into the hotels I had arranged. The airline was unhelpful, and I was going to have to book an entirely new flight after going back to Athens and then to the airport again, and ... read more

Sometimes it can be nice to make a trip back to where it all started. I decided early in the process of choosing which schools to visit on which Saturdays that this was going to need to be a local game. Next weekend is Oregon and Oregon State, so I’m flying across the country. My philosophy has been to balance out the really long trips with short ones in adjacent weeks. So Week 1 was Michigan, but Week 2 was home at Georgia. And so on. I’ve done two mid-level trips for the past two weeks (five hours away), so the 1.5 hours I spent getting to Mercer University was a cake walk. While I’ve tried to visit schools I’ve never attended a football game at, this week was different. Second time staying in Georgia, as ... read more

It’s one month into college football, and I’ve now been to stadiums in four of the Power Five conferences (only the Pac-12 is left). And in five weeks, I’ve attended seven games. The home team has won every single time. This week found me in the ACC, watching NC State on the road, yet again. I bet they want me to stop doing that. The home team this week was Florida State, the Seminoles, in Tallahassee. When I was a teenager, Florida State was THE team to beat. And the town I spent part of middle- and all of high school in is exactly 100 miles away from the campus. In fact, the CBS affiliate for our town has been based in Tallahassee for as long as I can remember. So FSU was pumped into our ... read more

North America » United States » Mississippi » Starkville September 21st 2019

I hadn’t planned on visiting Mississippi at all this year, much less paying a visit to the home of the Cowbell in college football. When this season started, I had already bought a ticket for the Alabama game for this weekend. It was cheap, and Alabama has been a perennial favorite to play for a national title. But when I was at West Virginia last week, Nick (the WVU fan we met sitting next to us at the game) scoffed when I told him the opponent: Southern Miss. My response at the time was to say something snarky about him paying for my ticket if he wants me to attend a quality game in Tuscaloosa. He had bragged about attending the Iron Bowl last year because his girlfriend is a student at Alabama. Still, his derogatory ... read more

Marshall has a storied football program, and even if you don’t know anything about them, you’ve probably heard of the film We Are Marshall. It starred Matthew McConaughey and is about 13 years old. It was pretty popular, had lots of famous people in it. The gist is that the university recovered from a terrible plane crash and went on to represent the spirit of college football. After visiting the university for a football game, I kind of wonder whether they should’ve just let the program fold. A football game at Marshall University has all the feel of a high school game. Take that for what you will. The people in the stands are primarily from the town of Huntington, where Marshall University is located. People can leave the game and come back in, ... read more

North America » United States » West Virginia » Morgantown September 14th 2019

This was the best game I’ve attended all season, hands down. But West Virginia University is place of big contrasts. The stadium and the game were amazing. But the city of Morgantown is one of those places that just make me want to get out of town quickly. There are several reasons for this. No trip to Morgantown is complete without driving through the winding, narrow roads that lead off into neighborhoods that are full of murder houses. That may seem like an exaggeration, but it’s happened to me every time I’ve been here. Read on, if ye dare! This trip has been the impetus for my decision to treat the 2019 college football season as my extended vacation. Jack is with me on this trip, and it was his idea. Back in the summer, he ... read more

My third game of this season wasn't much of a trip. Even though there wasn’t much travelling in a vehicle, however, there was plenty of walking. Full disclosure: I’ve been to probably 100 games involving this team, and basically every home game (except maybe 5) since 2008. It is my 22nd consecutive game in Sanford Stadium, and that streak will end next week because I’ll be in West Virginia. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This week was the one I had circled on my calendar for the shortest “trip” in the football season, and after last weekend’s whirlwind trip through Michigan and the Big 10, I was glad to have a week with no major movements. For the past few years, since 2012 I suppose, I’ve had my buddy ... read more

North America » United States » Michigan » Ann Arbor September 1st 2019

Another day, another college football game. Today was markedly different from yesterday. First off, we didn’t have nearly so far to travel as we did yesterday. Ann Arbor is only an hour away from East Lansing, so that made it easier to sleep in. But it also meant that we didn’t have as many stops to make along the way. In fact, we only made one ‘stop’ between the two towns, and I wouldn’t really call it a stop since we didn’t actually stop the car. There’s a town called Hell that’s semi on the way between our two schools for this weekend, with only maybe a ten-minute detour. So of course we had to see that. Everything I saw online said that it was basically a tourist-trap type of place, but when we drove into ... read more

I'm back! This year, I’m doing something different for college football season. Those who have read my facebook posts for the past couple of months, you will already know this. But for my faithful blog readers, you may not know. Since I didn’t get to do any big trips this summer, which I usually enjoy, my 2019 “big trip” will be an intermittent, extended sojourn through the world of college football. Another impetus for this decision is my dissatisfaction with the prices of tickets for my beloved alma mater, the Georgia Bulldogs. They are AVERAGING over $100 per ticket, which is certainly not helped by a $500 price tag for that Notre Dame game. So, each weekend, I’ll be at a different school; sometimes, it’ll even be TWO schools per weekend. This first weekend of college ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami Beach March 12th 2019

So it finally arrived--the entire reason I had planned this trip. We went to South Beach to see the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world. It's probably weird to say that we went to South Beach for any reason other than the beach or for shopping or anything associated with beach vacations. And that's not to say that we didn't do either of those things. We did get in some beach time, we got some food from one of the local restaurants, and we even bought a few supplies at a store. And I did the touristy thing and got a Starbuck's drink as we were about to leave. But the primary purpose for visiting was also the primary purpose for this trip: checking out the Art Deco.
