Another coincidence
The eeriness of coincidence hearing that Merle Haggert had passed away and seeing his name in your song title today!
8th April 2016

I know ! Yet at the time I was typing the title I didn't know he had died and on his birthday too. What a coincidence !

Thank you for this blog as you are very empathetic to the pilgrims...
have you been inspired to walk some of the Way? The drive you took today from Ponferada to Santiago will take me two weeks when I walk it in September. The weather should be better then.

The Camino Way
We had thought about some way of doing part of it but having the car has made it a bit difficult other than taking some other transport to get to a starting point.Perhaps another time for us.We are in great admiration of those walking especially in the rain which has also been quite chilly.September should certainly be warmer than now.We would be interested to read your blog once you get underway. We will be home in New Zealand by September.Off to Portugal today for us.

Siesta to go with plan to shorten working day
Coincidentally saw the above headline in the Dom yesterday after reading the blog about times in Spain. Apparently Spain adopted Berlin time back in 1943 when Franco was supporting the Nazis rather than being on Greenwich meantime. The current caretaker leader is saying he would like to change to the right time zone as well as do away with the long lunch breaks ( siestas) that Spain is known for and shorten the current working day to make them more productive....interesting to hear about in light of your travels and comments about sunrise and sunset times.
6th April 2016

Well isn't it interesting what blogs throw up.We have been trying to find out why Spain has just the one time zone when it should have two.You would have thought that change would have come by now given the way the EU is governed. One does get the feeling of old values and ways of life are more difficult to change in Europe than a country like NZ with a shorter 'European 'history.Schools have hours all over the place.Off to Portugal today and although it is directly south our clocks go back an hour on crossing the border.

Traffic lights, oh boy.
We had the same experience with the traffic lights four years ago. We came to the conclusion that it was a way of slowing the traffic down at regular intervals, especially driving through villages. It obviously works. Can you imagine the same system being used between Auckland and Tauranga. You would have to add another hour onto your journey.
2nd April 2016

Interestingly though the locals didn't slow down.At one set as I came to almost a stop a local nearly ran into the back of me.At the end of our time around Santander we were sailing through red lights like no ones business.

More on car jacking scams....
Be wary of $100 bills or any flyers stuck to you front or back windscreen which you discover while driving. Apparently car jackets rely on you being immediately interested enough to put car in park with engine running so you get out to retrieve the money or paper and off they go. While there are two of you on BBA V 3 I would feel sorry for the one who stays with the car and gets kidnapped or gas to defend themselves against the car hackers. Just food for thought!

We are on the watch ! So far though the natives have been very friendly.Think the stakes might go up as we hit Portugal and then onto the Med coast of Spain.
30th March 2016

Other car scams?
So the bags are sorted but what about other scams where people try to get you to stop driving then steal the car as you go to their aid?
30th March 2016

Gosh you are on to it ! Car starts electronically as it also locks. If they managed to start it and take off it would only be because we are around the car. When they stopped they couldn't start it again. But then we could be taken hostage!Mmnn have to give this scenario more thought. Not a problem here in the north but getting prepared for Portugal and then Med coast of Spain

I've been enjoying your blogs...
and am especially looking forward to those recounting your journey along the Camino de Santiago as I will be walking the Way in September starting in Pamplona.
30th March 2016

Hi Bob,glad you are enjoying the ride with us.Weather has been perfect making the trip so much easier.Mush more to come as we work our way west and will be trying to follow the Way as much as we can except of course by car.Pamplona is a lovely city and very compact so easy to get around.

Faxes do still exist...
Like our working VCR and still recording (missed TV shows) video tapes our fax is still operational and functional. Think maybe we could be a museum of " old school technologies"? could start a museum of " old school technology" one day?

Where does the English Channel actually start?
Enjoyed the read today and I accept I never did study Geography but just wondered about the gun placements on the West Coast of France in relation to the English Channel?
21st March 2016

The English Channel
Yes,we have always wondered too. When writing the blog there is the occasional reference to Mr Google to be done and it always mentions the English Channel rather than say the Bay of Biscay which we think is a more local name for the body of water above the northern coast of Spain.Of course the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey are close to the western side of France.A book I am reading on the British raid on St Nazaire in 1942 refers to the sea off the city they attacked as The English Channel.

Carnal and the standing stones
Pleased you made to this interesting site. When we wandered amongst the stones we wondered how many have disappeared to make the many stone houses in the area. If that is the case then in the past there must have been thousands more. Our drive along the scenic road was shrouded in mist and steady rain. Temperatures should start to warm up now you are heading south.
19th March 2016

Does make one wonder if anyone realised what the history of the stones were when they built the houses.Fine weather continues,no rain for 10 days now.Could be a sprinkle in Lourdes if the forecast is to be believed and max temp 5C a bit of a reversal from 19C yesterday
18th March 2016

Yogi bear and the picnic basket?
Tim was wondering if you had seen the French version of Yogi Bear and Boo Boo with their picnic basket stealing machine (aka a helicopter) ?
18th March 2016

No,perhaps we should have hunted that out,LOL LOL
17th March 2016

Translator app?
Immediately thought of Mr Google when hearing about the breadcrumbs...do you have a translator app? Or what about an old school handy French pocket guide? Could have been your Xmas present if I had known!
17th March 2016

Didn't have the tablet with us or we might have been OK with the chapelure translation. However all not lost as got them the next day at the supermarket.

Singing along with you...
A great blog so far...wondering if you need a hymn book on tour to be inspired by all the churches you have seen?
