What I wouldn't give to be free to travel this amazing world 365 days a year. However, since retirement is not yet in the cards for us, we do our best to make the most of the time that we do get to traverse the world. I am blessed to have such an amazing travel partner in my husband, Roger. Together, we've had some worldly adventures and dream of many more to come in the years ahead.

St. Augustine said “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” My hope is to read thousands of pages and to find the magic, mystery and adventure in each place that I am blessed enough to plant my feet.

Our next adventure begins in early June when we set sail to explore the Greek Islands.

Farewell and Following Seas!

On the 17th we moored in Ios. A beautiful Island where you will find Homer (of the Odyssey) buried. As a part of our sailing charter we had access to a 5 star hotel for the day, Liostasi Hotel & Suites. We spent the afternoon lounging by the pool with refreshing cocktails. It is unusually warm in Greece this week with temps in the mid to high 80s. This sun is HOT. We find ourselves looking for shade quite often. On Saturday, the 18th, we ferried to Santorini. From the port of Athinos we had to drive a very narrow road up, up, up into the hillside. On one side is the cliff with water far below and the other is traffic going down. Crazy driving and I was grateful for Roger's expertise as we made ... read more

Every island tells it's own story. After leaving Kythnos we sailed to a beautiful cove off of Serifos. We anchored at sea and snorkeled. The water was the most beautiful green with shades of deep blue. You could see 30 feet down. It was a bit choppy but refreshing as our Temps were unusually high, like almost 100 degrees. After we finish our swim, we headed to Sifnos for the night. We are settling in with a cool drink after a long day of sailing and high heat. We're having pizza tonight after 10 nights of mostly fish. Although Roger did have a local delicacies last night, GOAT. Heading to Ios tomorrow and then on to Santorini for a few nights off the boat. This has shaped up to be an amazing adventure.... read more

Wow! Been quiet for a few days with limited WiFi but boy has it been amazing. We headed to Hydra when word of a storm brewing spread. A storm to a sailor is all about the wind, not so much the rain. We anchored in Hydra and enjoyed gale force winds from the safety of our harbor. It was quite entertaining to watch other ships attempt to moor. Our captain is an expert at docking our ship, the Christianna, a 60 foot sail boat. We had no issues but we learned from others what not to do. Hydra is a magical village full of art galleries, local handmade items, clothing and jewelry. Hydra does not allow vehicles except for the garbage truck. Folks get around on donkeys or use their legs. Our captain shared that the ... read more

Our first full day out to sea found us enjoying the deep blue waters of the Sarconic Gulf. We ported in Aegina and climbed to the mountain top to see the Temple of Aphaia (490 BC). It was hot, hot, hot. Aegina is home to what many believe to be the best pistachios ever! Of course, we bought some and enjoyed them along the way. After spending a few minutes in the quaint village, we plunged into the sea to cool off before setting sail for Poros. Sailing into Poros is like sailing into a fairy tale. It is a beautiful cliff side town that seems to say 'come sailor and lay your head for the night, here you will find rest'. Throughout Poros mother nature rewarded us with climbing bougainvillea, jasmine and cactus in bloom. ... read more

Our last night in Athens found us taking a funicular through an underground tunnel up to Lycabettus Hill, the tallest point from which to see the city of Athens. On top is an old church and incredible views. We watched the sun set on our last night and toasted Athens a fond farewell.... read more

Rising early today, we walked to the Acropolis of Athens. This ancient ruin is located on a massive rocky outcrop above the city of Athens. There we found several ancient buildings of historic significance. The most famous of these being the Parthenon. After hiking up a somewhat treacherous stairway that has probably been there for hundreds of years, we found ourselves amidst history. It is nearly impossible to fathom how the Parthenon was built in its day. I am in awe of the fact that tons of marble and rock were formed by man and possibly a cantilever that resulted in these massive architectural structures. After spending hours on top overlooking the expansiveness that is Athens, we descended into Plaka. Plaka is considered one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens. There you find narrow streets lined ... read more

Our afternoon found us touring ancient sites. We found ourselves walking behind three soldiers marching their way to the Parliament building where guards stand watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This monument is in dedication to the services of an unknown soldier and to all soldiers killed in war. The changing of the guard was a art form in and of itself as the soldiers displayed stoic motion as the new guard changed stations with the existing guards on duty. Held some sentimentality as I thought of our son who serves so valiantly for the United States Navy.... read more

Day 2 in Athens finds us once again touring on foot. I find it is the best way to truly see Athens as we make our way through all the narrow streets with their many nooks and crannies. After making a quick stop for some Lattes and a danish, we head towards the National Gardens. As an avid gardener, I had to take time to stroll through Greece's National Garden. We found it to be an oasis in the midst of a huge metropolis that is home to over 6 Million people.... read more

Having left Chicago on June 7, we have now been awake for 27 hours and our adrenaline is starting to wear off. We arrived in Greece this afternoon to amazing private condo accommodations. After getting some good insight into restaurants and grocers, we set foot to see a bit of Athens before we crash and burn for the night. Our journey began as we searched for an ATM to get Euros, had to hit three ATMs before we found one that would work. All is good now and we are learning the Euro system of money management. We then hit the grocery store, if you want to call it that. It's an open air street front. Upon entering, the man behind the deli counter quickly called for help as he and we were having trouble communicating ... read more
