On the 17th we moored in Ios. A beautiful Island where you will find Homer (of the Odyssey) buried. As a part of our sailing charter we had access to a 5 star hotel for the day, Liostasi Hotel & Suites. We spent the afternoon lounging by the pool with refreshing cocktails. It is unusually warm in Greece this week with temps in the mid to high 80s. This sun is HOT. We find ourselves looking for shade quite often. On Saturday, the 18th, we ferried to Santorini. From the port of Athinos we had to drive a very narrow road up, up, up into the hillside. On one side is the cliff with water far below and the other is traffic going down. Crazy driving and I was grateful for Roger's expertise as we made the trek up. It took a bit of effort but we found our hotel and had a double reward. First, they upgraded us to the honeymoon suite which is 3 levels and overlooks the Caldera. Our second reward is this land. Santorini was formed by a volcanic eruption and it's topography is like none other. Roger and I both agree that in all our travels
this is the most beautiful sea landscape we've ever witnessed.
This morning we visited Kamari Beach which touts black sand formed from the volcanic eruption. We took the afternoon to drive to Oia which is a beautiful town on the North end of Santorini. Our captain suggested we visit Ammoudi. Although it was a bit treacherous to find as the road is winding and parking is limited, we did manage to squeeze our very small rental car into a spot. As we walked down the hill and turned the corner, we were rewarded with the most quaint fishing village. We had lunch at Katina Fish Tavern which I highly recommend as the fish is fresh and the atmosphere makes one feel as if you are dreaming. We stuffed ourselves today by wrapping up a great day at Argo in Thira. We shared a seafood platter for two and stuffed ourselves. A great day with great food and wine.
As it is Father's Day, we are thinking of our dads back home and wishing you both a great day. Know that our love for you both crosses the Atlantic.
