Our last few days in New Zealand have been pretty chilled. Yesterday Emily and Lydia came with us to Katikati (what a fab name for a town!) bird park and Karangahake Gorge. The bird park was in a really lovely setting and we were given some bird food to take round with us. The first birds we saw were ducks so we fed them enthusiastically! This was a mistake as they followed us round the round the rest of the park. We found a really quiet spot with a bird table and decided it would be a good idea to put some of the bird food on the table to attract some of the birds - we did so and sat quietly but it wasn't long before the ducks waddled along and spoiled the peace. Wow what an exciting 2 days we've had!! We set off for Taupo late yesterday morning and decided to stop on the way at Skyline skyrides!! This involved getting a Gondola (aka cable car) to the top of a big hill and then riding a luge (small go-cart) down one of three tracks - scenic, intermediate and advanced! We paid for 3 turns each on the luge as it was only an extra 2 dollars! The scenic track was a bit lame and Rob kept getting stuck on the flatter bits!! Karen wasn't sure whether she wanted to do any more luge-ing as the first track was rather on the bumpy side!! So we decided to go for a spot of lunch and have a think!! We had some rather interesting pizza with bright pink hot ... read more

Sunday was a bit of a chilled day! We were going to go to church in the morning but we slept through! Doh!! When we did surface we had a chat with our wonderful hosts and decided to make the best of the good weather and have a picnic!! Thats one of Robs favourite things to do!!! Not!!! We had planned on going to see a stranded Orca Whale that they have named Nobby, but we discoverd that they manged to get him back swimming again in high tide! So that was good news! Anyway we went for this picnic and there was an added bonus... we could take the kayaks!!!!! Although Rob and Lynne were a little scared! Rob can't swim!!! When we got to the sea we had our picnic under blankets as the ... read more

We've just got back to Tauranga after spending a few nights in Coromandel town to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary!!! We left Tauranga late Thursday morning and worked our way slowly towards Coromandel. We stopped at Karangahake Gorge for lunch and had the most amazing date and oat cake. The road from Thames to Coromandel is about 50km long but it is very windy and right next to the sea with no barrier so we went pretty slowly!! The scenery was absolutely stunning to so we kept stopping to let Rob take photos. At one point a Police man took a photo of us.... Weird! When we eventually arrived at our accommodation, at about 4pm, we immediately fell in love with the place. We had booked Driving Creek Villas in advance and knew what to expect ... read more

Yesterday was a really amazing day! We got up at 6.30am so that we could drive to Whakatane (prounounced pha-ka-ta-ne) for our White Island Volcano adventure! We had to be at the airport for 9.30am but made it to Whakatane in time to have a coffee at a lovely garden centre that was playing a really bad version of Flower of Scotland!! When we arrived at the airport we had a saftey demo and had to give the lady an emergency contact number in case of emergency... Scary! Our helicopter and pilot arrived at the airport at 10am and as you'll see from the photos it was tiny!! Enough room for the pilot and 4 passengers and we weren't able to sit next to each other - Karen got to sit up front with the pilot! ... read more

Today has been the first day of proper exploring... gone is the safety of Jim and Lynne getting us about... today we were on our own! Oh yeah and Em came along for the ride! We had loads of ideas about what we would do today... but the bird park was closed! We were so looking forward to feeding the tropical birds!! Anyway we decide to head to Rotorua today and call in at some water falls (Okere falls) on the way... Before going to the falls we called in to a coffee shop that was situated just near by and had a coffee (just for a change), a brownie and some cookies!! Yum!! And then we made our way to the falls... but that was no easy thing to do... we headed down a road ... read more

The weather here really is fantastic!! Yesterday was a busy day! We went to Tauranga City Church for the morning and evening services. This is a hillsong church and almost identical to the other hillsong churches we have experienced. There are loads of young people though which is a big contrast to most churches back home. It also served amazing chocolate cake after both services which is better than back home!! Emily was singing with the youth band for the evening service and it was lovely to see her new found confidence. In the afternoon we went and looked at some houses.... with the Bennett's.... Don't worry Mum!! There really are some amazing houses here - they are all completely different and many have views of the sea. They don't have central heating though and they ... read more

New Zealand really is an amazing place and it's so good to experience it with friends!!! The weather has been amazing so far - the spring here is so much warmer than back home! We have just about recovered from our jet lag... but it feels so weird to be a day ahead of everyone else!! Yesterday afternoon we walked up Mount Maunganui which is an extinct volcano at the mouth of the harbour in Tauranga. We were really blown away by the views from the top and as we walked up and down! Beautiful blue sea, white beaches, islands, boats, lush trees and lots of sheep! The contrast with New York is incredible. One of the sheep we saw really amused us as he looked like he was sunbathing!! We met a man at the ... read more

We finally made it to New Zealand after a very long journey and after losing a day... not sure how that happened!!?? We arrived at 4.30am New Zealand time and had to go through 'bio-security' which is basically a good way of getting your hiking boots cleaned!! They do it for you... its great!! Sooooo if you want your boots cleaned all you have to do is come to New Zealand!!! After sitting in the airport for a couple of hours Jim, Lynne and Lyd came to pick us up, totally amazing!! Em had to work which was rubbish but we would see her later!! We had a coffee... not Starbucks though and chatted about not a lot as we were sooo tired after being up for about 36 hours! We winged our way back to ... read more
