Yesterday, we wrapped up our morning in Leon. What a great city. I could have definitely spent another day there. The Medieval feel is right up my alley and the walled city is simply impressive. We also had a chance to experience another Durum at the Turkish restaurant up the street from Doner Kabob. While it wasn't nearly as good, we did get to try some amazing Arabic tea. All in all, Leon was a wonderful city and a must see if you are coming to Spain. Onward back to Madrid! It was so sad to have to turn the keys back over to Avis for our little Ibiza. I was worried her next driver wouldn’t take nearly as good care of her and I will continue to worry about her well being. Mike assured me ... read more

The Viking Festival has ended and Mike and I have headed out of town on our way to our next evening in Leon. This route will take us three hours south back toward Madrid. On our way, we stopped in a small quaint town called Padron. A local, non-touristy area, Padron had a unique charm all its own. Sidewalk cafés and cobblestone streets graced the tiny town center as Mike and I visited the grocery store to stock up for the trip. Our next stop was 2 hours away in Ponferrada. There we would be able to see a large medieval castle built by the Templar Knights. It was impressive to say the least. Ponferrada was a cute town, modern with a hint of old until you see the large castle on the hill and are ... read more

The Viking Festival went off today without a hitch. I was once again grateful for the tiny Ibiza as maneuvering around the tiny streets of Catoira in back to back traffic trying to find a parking spot was no easy task - especially when you try to park in someone's overgrown yard and they ask you to move with a boulder in front of you, a ditch to the one side and a sharp incline to the other... again, praises to the Ibiza. The festival folks were in high spirits when we arrived as the stilt walkers breathed fire into the sky and the drum beats droned on. Vendors sold food and the wine flowed (maybe a little too much for some folks as there were already people passed out before the Viking ships even arrived). ... read more

Kilometers per hour have me confused. At least that's the excuse I had planned on using. The fact that the GPS converts my speed into miles per hour is totally beside the point and was a trivial piece of information I was prepared to completely ignore. When we got into our mini rental car (they even gave us a black one!) I was prepared to make good time and be ahead of the pack. I've driven in Costa Rica after all and if you were reading our blog while we lived there, you know how bad those roads can be. Spain would be a cake walk. We headed out in our new Ibiza for our 6 hour trek to the Northwestern coast. Our destination was a small village called Dodro in the Galicia region. I was ... read more

A Night Out on the Town

Madrid awakens at night. Dinner was served at 11pm when we settled into an outdoor seafood restaurant across the street from our hotel. Temperatures were pleasant enough to be dressed up and seated outside without being too hot. We ordered garlic shrimp and marinated sardines both of which were outstanding. Of course the olives that came with the sardines were perfect. We hopped the Metro again which felt surprisingly safe even though it was Midnight and ended up in La Latina. La Latina seemed to be a place brimming with people and clubs. A totally different feel from where our hotel is located which is much more commercial. Many streets were brick and cobblestone here and some simply could not be managed by cars. You can tell what the city felt like before cars were invented ... read more

Ever had an experience where you know you are exactly where you should be? Where everything flows as it should, nothing is forced and you just feel surrounded with a sense of being quite centered? That’s exactly how the trip has been so far. The flight ended up being shorter than expected. Instead of almost an 8 hour flight, we landed in Madrid after just 6 hours and 40 minutes. Considering I got on the plane, ate dinner, watched Sherlock Holmes, fell asleep and woke up 20 minutes prior to landing, I have no complaints. The first thing I noticed about Madrid was how clean the city was. It’s a city, no doubt but just cleaner than expected. The air doesn’t reek of diesel, the streets aren’t littered with trash and the strong, cool breeze that ... read more

The trip has gone like clockwork so far. We managed to get everything wrapped up before we departed and actually got on the road not on time - but EARLY. For those of you who know me well, you know that's a miracle. Closing the business down today was a big help and allowed us to wake and concentrate on our plans. Aside from the one client who has called literally 6 .. wait.. ring ring..make that 7 times this morning (apparently she's not believing our message that says we have NO ACCESS TO VOICE OR EMAIL), things have been quiet. Completing US Air's web check in online last night was a huge help. We didn't have to wait at the kiosks at all but simply got in line to check out bags: in and out ... read more

So it's been 3 years and 8 months since I've logged into the Travel Blog. Every time I've said, "I really have to get a new post up", something else came up that side tracked the ambition. Where to start... where to start... Mike and I decided to return from Costa Rica after an absolutely wonderful 6 month adventure. We truly had an amazing experience traveling around the country with no possessions, no mortgages, no bills ~ just plain and simple Pura Vida living. We just came to find that it wasn't the place where we wanted to drop our life savings and never leave. We are both perpetual travel bugs and the idea of buying property in CR and never being able to really leave it, wasn't overly appealing. In our experience, we found that ... read more

My parents decided on a whim to come visit Costa Rica. What a great excuse for Mike and I to continue our travels of the country and show my folks around a bit. We had planned on taking them to La Paz Waterfall, Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio and ending their visit here in Sámara. It wasn’t until halfway into their trip that I realized we simply wouldn’t have time to do everything and decided to cut Manuel Antonio out of our plans. When we arrived at La Paz Waterfall Gardens Resort, we were completely amazed at the beauty of the rooms. The design was perfect, the craftsmanship breathtaking and the views something that we’ll be talking about for years to come. There was no amenity overlooked and many that came as pleasant surprises. We had a ... read more

Sámara is located on the western Pacific coast between the beaches of Nosara and Montezuma. It is said to be one of the safest and most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Wildlife here abounds and not a day goes by without us seeing monkeys, lizards and birds from the deck of our condo. We’ve also spotted in our back yard a crocodile who has become quite famous around town for his survival skills. The “lot” next door to our condos apparently has only recently come into existence. To the dismay of locals, what used to be an estuary was destroyed in the middle of the night by folks dumping dirt to create what now looks like a “lot”. The owner figured he could get more money if he sold this section of his land to developers ... read more
