We spent this morning exploring the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta. The number of Australian plants that have adapted to survive in Australia’s harsh arid interior is astonishing. Although I was very concerned about the number of warning signs asking us to stay on the paths to avoid snakes it proved to be the ants that were more of a problem. They were everywhere! Big black ones that inevitably made it into my sandals and delivered a bite or two. Fortunately their bites do not seem to be as bad as those delivered by their smaller ant cousins. After completing the ‘Regional Walk’ circuit we took a break for some morning tea. A highlight was sitting beside a small pond which seemed to attract quite a few birds including a wattlebird, who took ... read more

Oh, wow, it is really hot again today! We started this morning with a stroll around Melrose. We followed the sign to the swing bridge which was … underwhelming. We wandered along the Chicken run/Weaving camels/Farmers’ freewheeling fun track mountain bike tracks until we reached an open view of Mount Remarkable. At last we managed to take a photo of the mountain with the sun shining on it rather than from behind it. We walked back into the town centre along the streets so that we could take a look at some of Melrose’s historic buildings. Just before we reached the first notable building we spotted an enormous red gum in the middle of the road! The old Jacka’s Brewery has had an extensive makeover and will soon reopen as a taphouse offering boutique accommodation and ... read more

This morning we woke with the birds! There were magpies caroling and willie wagtails calling very close by, with kookaburras and cockatoos (or maybe corellas) in the background. Fortunately the magpies flew off somewhere else after they sang for a bit and we managed to doze off for another hour. For Christmas our friend Steve received the lonely planet book Best Day Walks Australia. We were all quite enthusiastic about the entry outlining the hike to the summit of Mount Remarkable so included a couple of nights in Melrose in our itinerary. With the day forecast to be very hot, we decided to scale back our plans a bit and this morning we ventured into Alligator Gorge rather than attempting the summit. As we drove towards Wilmington on our way to the gorge, we passed a ... read more

We backtracked a bit today. First it was back to Moonta Mines Museum to ride the tourist railway because it’s schedule is Sat/Sun/Wed and public holidays at the moment. It’s all well and good travelling outside of school holidays, but sometimes attractions don’t run everyday unless they are catering to holidaying families. Our train driver, Geoff, delivered some commentary (and Dad jokes!) along the train’s route and recorded commentary filled in the gaps to provide us with a very good idea of how tough life was at the Moonta Mines. We lunched again in Moonta, but at a different cafe to spread our $$ around town. After lunch we headed back to Kadina to fill up with diesel at the BP. The BP is opposite the water tower so we took the opportunity to photograph it ... read more

We have spent today exploring the ‘Copper Triangle’ made up of the towns of Wallaroo, Kadina and Moonta. We started in Wallaroo with a photo of the old town hall while we waited for Cathy and Steve to have their tyre fixed. Punctured tyres are becoming a bit of a theme? On our last joint road trip to NSW it was our car that had a slow leak and needed a repair in Coffs Harbour. With both vehicles good to go we made our way to Kadina looking for some more water tower art. We were approaching the Aldi and I joked to Bernie about whether we should pop in to see if there were any good specials left from Wednesday. Next thing I know he is turning into the Aldi car park and I’m saying ... read more

After several cloudy days we finally woke to some blue sky this morning which was very welcome. Today we continued around the ‘toe’ of the Yorke Peninsula and then started up the west coast. Our first stop was at Point Annie where we drove straight down towards what we thought was the viewpoint rather than taking the left turn and then driving around to the official parking area. We managed it OK in the MU-X, but Cathy and Steve decided against it in their Subaru. They probably wouldn’t have had the clearance needed as it was pretty rugged. The other disadvantage with the unofficial parking area was that we could only see the rocky bay. When we drove around to the designated parking area we were treated to views of a beautiful sandy beach to the ... read more

Today we explored the Dhilba Guuranda (Innes) National Park. We purchased ingredients in Yorketown to make our own dinner tonight, but for some reason we failed to buy bread and sandwich fillings, despite discussing that we would take lunch into the park with us. That meant a quick trip to the Marion Bay General Store to buy sandwich fixings at marked up prices before we drove into the park!! D’Oh. We had already purchased our National Park Passes online so we were ready to start exploring. Our first stop was at Stenhouse Bay which features the old jetty and a lookout walk. When we arrived in the parking area there was a van/motor home practicing some freestyle parking, parked right in the middle of the parking area which was a bit bewildering as parking bays were, ... read more

If we thought that it was windy yesterday we were mistaken. It was much, MUCH, windier today! It was very windy when we packed the car at James Well but, when we arrived at Stansbury, we realized that the cars had actually been quite shielded from the wind by the beach house. Hopping out of the car at Stansbury’s photographic viewpoint we were exposed to the full force of the sou’westerly! From our wind-blasted photo op we drove around to our first painted water tower for the day featuring a blue swimmer crab and dolphins painted by Mike Makatron and Conrad Bizjak in May 2021. Continuing south along the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula we called in at Wool Bay to see the Lime Kiln Ruin. The lime kiln was built between 1900 and 1910 ... read more

We had read about the sunrise on the red cliffs at Ardrossan being spectacular so we were up before the sun and off to the Ardrossan jetty to take photos. While waiting for the sun to rise we met a Golden Retriever puppy named Gus and chatted to the locals fishing for squid and blue swimmer crabs. At 7.10am the sun rose behind a bank of clouds so we had to wait a little longer before the sun rose above the clouds and was shining onto the red sandstone cliffs. After the sunrise we went ‘home’ for breakfast and showers before driving down to Port Vincent looking for all the Photo Opportunities shown on the tourist map! Our first stop was at Billy Goat Flat/Pine Point. Funnily enough Billy Goat Flat was down at sea level ... read more

This morning at about 7.20am our bedroom window sounded as if it had been hit by a very strong gust of wind, although we did wonder if it was Meredith opening the sliding door in the next room? It turned out that the city was slightly shaken by an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale this morning! Today it was time to repack our bags and leave the city of churches behind us and head to the Yorke Peninsula. It has been great to catch up with friends in Adelaide and, hopefully, it will not be two and a half years before we are able to do it again. Thanks COVID for preventing us from having our annual catch-ups at the Port Adelaide vs Richmond match! Before we rounded the top of Gulf St Vincent ... read more
