This morning we packed the car for the second last time before we pack up for the big drive home on Wednesday. First stop, the General Store to buy another cask of water and some food in case we need it for lunch. Food and water sorted we popped along to Menindee Auto Repairs to see if we might be able to organise a replacement bolt for the LED strip light that is currently gaffer taped on at one end. The helpful mechanic engineered a bolt for us (he cut it shorter!), fitted it and checked that the other bolt is nice and tight and provided us with the sage advice that the tightness of the bolts should be checked periodically because dirt road driving will loosen the nuts!! All that for $10.00. We set off ... read more

This morning we headed off into the Kinchega National Park. Such a drama buying park passes in NSW! We did try to buy one online as we did (easily) for South Australia, but they wanted us to submit a copy of our vehicle registration showing our home address and a copy of Bernie’s Seniors card. Well, gee whiz, we didn’t think to bring the vehicle registration documentation with us!! Today at the park we need to pay $8.00 for a day pass in actual cash money, put it in an envelope and post it into a slot. How archaic. Fortunately we managed to scratch together $16.00 worth of change to make both vehicles legal should we be stopped by a ranger. We started with the River Drive now at least partially reopened after the rain last ... read more

This morning we checked out of Dugout 3 at the White Cliffs Underground Motel and pointed the nose of the MU-X southwards on the Opal Miners Way to Wilcannia. We are really homeward bound now! Travelling on Opal Miners Way, which is a sealed road, was a welcome relief from the dirt road driving that we have been doing over the last couple of days! Even though the road is sealed, it’s still a ‘long paddock’ so, in addition to watching for kangaroos and emus, we had to be on the lookout for black cattle. And … we saw all three! Three kangaroos jumped across the road, a black cow/steer (?) stared us down from three quarters of the way across the road as much as to say ‘I’ll finish crossing in my own time’ and, ... read more

As planned, we were up at 4.00am this morning, threw on some clothes and made our way up to the roof of the motel. Bernie set up the tripod and camera and pointed it towards the Milky Way. Our stop here in White Cliffs was specifically planned around the new moon so that the sky would be as dark as possible to photograph the Milky Way. We’re not sure what time moonrise and moonset were, but we could not find even a sliver of moon in the sky this morning at 4.00am. Bernie took some shots at around 16/17 seconds exposure and then we went back to bed! This morning, when it was properly morning for normal people, we had a look around White Cliffs by navigating our way around the Heritage Driving Trail. We started ... read more

This Broken Hill AirBnB has been quite a wildlife experience!? When we arrived we found generations of daddy long legs (living and dead) hanging behind the bathroom doors. This despite the fact that the owner messaged Cathy on Sunday to say that she had cleaned the house ready for our arrival because her cleaner was sick. What!? Obviously neither of them can see spiders and their webs!! Yesterday, Cathy surprised a skink amongst some carry bags they had in the lounge room. This morning I reached into my toilet bag and took out a tube of hair product that had what looked like Persian fairly floss on it. Ooh, I said to Bernie, I wonder if it’s spider’s web … just as a small huntsman crawled out of my toilet bag! Fortunately I’m OK with spiders. ... read more

The AirBnB we are staying in is actually the front unit of a pair of units. The bedroom we are sleeping in must adjoin a bedroom in Unit 2, the occupants of which like to wake to the sound of heavy metal music. Fortunately we have already been awake on each of the last three mornings when their heavy metal ‘alarm’ has started blaring through the wall. Today we went sightseeing in Silverton. Silverton is about 25 kilometres from Broken Hill on a road interspersed with (lots of) dips and floodways! At first it was hard to tell the difference between a dip and a floodway but, eventually, we noted that the floodways seemed to have flatter bottoms AND they were the ones with the flood markers! What was consistent was the amount of red dirt ... read more

More sightseeing in Broken Hill today. We drove out to the Living Desert State Park where Cathy paid our fee at the PayBay. The payment was made for four people, but only produced one ticket. Hmmn, what to do when we are in two cars?? Cathy and Bernie had just decided to tear it in half when the ranger happened along. He agreed that sharing the ticket between the cars worked for him! We made our way around to the sculptures which were proposed by Gosford based sculptor, Lawrence Beck to add sculpture to Broken Hill’s art culture. Fifty-three tonnes of sandstone was shipped in from Wilcannia and during April and May of 1993, 12 artists transformed the stone into an artwork of international renown. It really is very impressive perched on top of the hill ... read more

We started today with a visit to the Tourist Information Centre hoping for some advice on how we are going to fit everything on our list into just three days! It may have been a mistake because we ended up with information about even more places of interest here in Broken Hill and surrounding areas?! We decided to start with a Heritage Walking Tour at 10.30am. The walking tours are conducted by volunteers who have, generally, worked in the mines so have first hand knowledge of the mines and mining. Our tour was conducted by retired miner, Ray, who spent 35 years working in the mines. He provided us with heaps of mining information and interesting anecdotes. It’s always great to hear about a place from a local. The tour started at the TIC before crossing ... read more

Oh no, Bernie and I dressed sort of matchy matchy today with both of us in tops and bottoms in shades of grey. I was dressed first so not my fault! Bernie claimed that he had no other clean clothes, so grey top and bottom it had to be. At least we didn’t have matching artwork or slogan’s on our tops. We have seen a few couples getting around in gear like that which looks a bit naff! Another 400 kilometres today to travel between Port Augusta and Broken Hill. We took a quick stop in Wilmington which is just a few kilometres north of Melrose where we were on the 12th and 13th of March! I think we’ve driven in a big circle?! In fact, I think we had driven almost to Wilmington when we ... read more

We covered a lot of ground today. We set out from Sceale Bay about 8.30am and pretty much repeated yesterday’s trip, but joined the Eyre Highway at Wudinna rather than Minnipa. Wudinna is the home of the Australian Farmer Statue. First conceived in 1992 the eight metre, 70 tonne granite sculpture, carved by Marijan Bekic, was unveiled in 2009. With another 100 kilometres on the odometer we found ourselves in Kimba. Kimba has several art installations in and around town. Before lunch we viewed the Art Silo completed by Cam Scale in September 2017, the recycled steel sculpture of Edward John Eyre and an indigenous tracker at Whites Knob Lookout and the mural at the recreation reserve. Cathy was also excited by the fact that the football oval is named after former Geelong player, Corey Enright. ... read more
