TheCowans - Scott and Shauna Cowan

Scott and Shauna Cowan Shauna and I spent 2008 in South Africa volunteering at "The Seed of Hope" - a humanitarian aid program in Bhekulwandle, SA. We met a lot of fantastic people, made some great friends, experienced an exciting culture, and saw a lot of the beautiful country. We wrote these Blogs partly to keep our family and friends informed, but mostly because it was a way to process, understand and record all that we experienced and learned. We learned a lot! We hope you do too.

Check out www.theseedofhope.org for info on the Seed of Hope and its programs.

My wife and I visited Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Dec 16- 19, 2008. While we were there we realized that there were lots of things we would like to have known before we visited so that we could have prepared a bit better. So I thought I would post a blog here with some info if you are planning on traveling to Vic Falls anytime soon. Vic Falls Isn't Affected By The Situation In Zimbabwe Is It? A lot of the people we talked to in South Africa said that Vic Falls was not being affected by the issues the rest of [View Full Entry]

Well, we are on our way back to Canada tomorrow and over the past few days we have been able to reflect on our year here in South Africa. As a kid, on most nights at the supper table, my parents would ask me "So what did you learn at school today?" I hated that question, because although I was learning new things every day, I never really noticed and I hated having to think about it and come up with a clever answer each day. A few people have asked me, "So how has it been in Africa this year?" [View Full Entry]

I know it's only been a few weeks since our last message, but I thought that most of you would want to know what has just happened here. We're Not in Kansas Anymore A week and a half ago, a tornado struck the community of Bhekulwandle, where the Seed of Hope is. It was a beautiful Saturday evening when at about 6:30pm the sky suddenly turned greyish/yellow. The wind turned fierce and huge drops of rain and hail came down almost sideways. At our place, the patio door slammed shut so hard that the glass in it shot out of the [View Full Entry]

So I was just looking at our last blog update and it was three months ago! It seriously seems like it was only a few weeks ago. I guess time flies when you are having fun. Well, let me fill you in on what has been going on over the past few weeks. So You Think You Can Dance... Two weeks ago we were invited to a friends Zulu wedding. What an experience! The invitation said that it started at 9am, so when we rolled up at 9:10am I figured that we would have to sneak in the back. Little did [View Full Entry]

Hey, it's Shauna writing to update you on our lives here in South Africa. Scott should be back next time with his sense of humour and tear inducing stories, though. I've proven that Scott should be in charge of the blogging duties, since it's taken me over a month to finish this entry. I'm sorry it's so lengthy, we've had so many great experiences here so it's difficult to choose just a few to share with you all! We only have four months left before our year is up so we are trying to take every opportunity that comes our way [View Full Entry]

So it has been quite a while since we posted any updates on this blog. It's not that there aren't a lot of things to talk about, but I guess after a few months of being here, things don't seem as newsworthy as they did when we first arrived. I think that maybe we just don't realize how crazy some things are when we are in the middle of them. Sometimes though, a day comes that stands out as newsworthy. Unfortunately that's not usually a good thing. Sometimes No News is Good News On Wednesday I was working at the Seed [View Full Entry]

It Was A Dark and Stormy Night.... I'm writing this blog entry by candle light as we are experiencing one the planned power outages which have become so common across South Africa. In January, the government-run Electrical Utility announced that the electrical demand across the country had exceeded the supply of available energy. To deal with the shortage they rolled out a plan for scheduled power outages throughout the country. Areas are divided into "blocks" of electrical distribution areas, which are then scheduled for 4 hour power outages every second day. We were fortuna [View Full Entry]

It's Been a While... So, it has been a month since I last updated our Travel Blog. I apologize for the delay, it seems that life just got really busy as we found a place to stay, bought a car, returned our car when it fell apart, bought another car, and all the other details of setting up life in a new country. Now that things have settled down a bit, we will hopefully get back to more regular updates. I have tried to make up for the past few weeks by adding tonnes of pictures to this entry. Well, I have been trying very hard to keep up with the news both here and back in Canada, but it has been quite disheartening in both places. Canadian news headlines seem to be full of Freezing Weather, Terrible Car Accidents, Teenage Murders, and many other depressing things (including non-stop headlines about Britney Spears). The world headlines are full of Kenyan Violence, and the US Recession. Local headlines here outside Durban, SA contain crazy stories of Carjackings, Murder, and Robberies. So I thought that this week I would go with a news theme that is a little more encouraging. [View Full Entry]

Hello. Well we have finally arrived in South Africa. I was thinking that this is probably as far away from home as physically possible. So, I looked up an online map and saw that the exact opposite of Calgary, Alberta on a world globe is just off the coast of South Africa. So I guess technically, if I were to swim off shore, I would be on the exact other side of the world, but for my sake, I think that we are close enough. After travelling 18,200 kilometers (that's like 11,300 miles for you 'old school' folks - namely my [View Full Entry]
