Our journey to the Smokey Mountains of TN, began with a road trip from Miami, FL. For me this was the first time I would be driving such a distance to get to our destination and Jay kept reminding me that you have to consider the days spent on the road as part of the vacation - OK! Our first leg took us to Jacksonville, where we bunked over night, then we finished the trip passing through, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina before arriving in Tennessee. For Jay having road tripped before, he was like a kid wanting to take advantage of the many cheesy tourist traps offering the “best Peaches in GA!” or “We make all kinds of Cider” stands. My urging for a more civilized road trip fell on deaf ears and so we ... read more

Here is Austin there is a movement of locals who appreciate and support "Keeping Austin Wierd" where they love this unique identity. Our second day in Austin was a good experience of that as went about our planned activities but went off the beaten path....literally....and saw some really interesting and hilarious things. We started out the day by heading to the Sunset Valley Farmers Market. Over on the western side of Austin close to the Hill Country you see more of the industrial/rural side of Austin. After a few missed turns we found a giant football stadium apparenlty for high school sports - obviously football is a serious sport here - and in the parking lot was about thirty pop up tents. As we approached we noted just how unusual yet refreshing it was to see ... read more

We landed in Austin just in time for dinner. So off in search of the South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery which was reported to have amazing tacos by a local owner who has three locations all called Torchys. I don know if it was fate but we somehow in trying to get to the Trailer Park location ended up at one of their other locations and it was the perfect place for us to stop. Not just because the tacos were awesome (more on that later) but because the staff got excited over having Austin virgins in their midsts, after we placed out order they got together and wrote us out a list ( complete with drawn in hearts) of things we must do during out stay. They even invited us to stop back before ... read more

Today, Wed, we went horseback riding on the president’s farm, rolling bright green hills, with amazing vistas with views that went on for miles. The terrain got muddy and mucky at points but these horses were true troopers and gave us a great trip. We were really proud of Adam who had never ridden a horse before and didn’t fall off once! Poor Elena got some bites from horse flies/fleas so her leg looks a little gross but we got her taken care of quickly with allergy medicine and balm to take away the itching. It was a lot of fun to tour the countryside in a unique way. Half way through the ride we got rained on so arrived back at the farm pretty wet but it was so worth it because there we were, ... read more

Thanks to the monkey visit on Tuesday which started at 5.30am and lasted till about 7am, Tuesday was a looong day. We checked out of the hotel at 8.30 since the power had been shut off at 8am so there was no point in hanging around and we drove to a local spice farm called Villa Vanilla. With not knowing what to expect, combined with getting a personal tour from the owner of the farm we had an amazing time. Henry was originally from Chicago, who had come to CR 30 years ago with the Peace Corp and stayed. About 21 years ago he bought a dying vanilla farm and has turned it into one of the few organic” bio-metric” self sustaining vanilla, cinnamon, all spice, peppercorn, cocoa bean farms in the region. Henry was a ... read more

So last night I was on our balcony and i was like ho-hum guess no monkeys for me, I was relaly hoping I would get one on our balcony. Even last night both Jay and I woke up once each in the middle of the night to peak on a banan we had left out. Then at about 5.30 I wa sup and couldn't sleep anymore and I looked outside and there was an amazing sunrise so I opened the door and there it was a monkey in the tree across from us, it was a mono titi, an andangered monkey that they said was rare to see, Oh my heart started racing and I called Jay and then we both went nuts, throwing out bananas and trying to capture the monkeys, then I realised Elena ... read more

Well unfortuantely we never got to Zip line today - we got to the site, paid and THEN they brought up a concern wiht the harnesses and Jay and would they fit him properly, so we pretty much wasted a day to find out they did not have the right harness for him and it would of been a risk for him to be in a suspension harness with not a lot of room for slipping.....we were pretty pissed since I had contacted the company "Canopy Titi" asked about any restrictions and was told since the cables are designed to hold 2000lbs we had no problem, what they failed to mention was if you are a size 38 waist or larger you shouldn't try go on the tour, so in the end what really was disapointing ... read more

It is so hard to start this first entry because yesterday when we landed I had a thousand things in my mind to tell everyone about and now I feel my words will only be a shadow of the descriptions I was writing in my head as we headed to Quepos. I think I could of flown in, seen the terrain and got on a plane and left immediately - not because I was deterred from what I saw but because it was so beautiful that I could not imagine seeing anything better. I have visited a lot of places in the world, seen all sorts of lands but nothing quite like this - rolling green mountains with red clay edges, bright green valleys and the clouds - they are so low and puffy they make ... read more

A monkey was on our balcony today……and WE WERE NOT HERE! How do I know? Because I left a banana on the ledge and for the two hours that we went out for lunch we came back and found a banana peel on the floor - how do you like that, eat and leave trash behind! Oh well I am hopeful that the new banana I put out will secure me an up close encounter with a monkey. We did go to Manuel Antonio Park today, we hired a tour guide who without we would never of spotted three different varieties of bats, two and three toed sloths, crazy neon colored bugs but I was the one who spotted the white faced monkey! The best part was once we saw one, we then saw about 5 ... read more
