The Traveling Dangleberries

Trace and I have decided to see a bit of the world. So we have quit our jobs, rented out our house and packed our bags and we are off in search of adventure.

First stop, the coup capital of South East Asia, Thailand.

How to Eat $1000 in 48 Hours

Published: October 19th 2007South America » Brazil » São Paulo

Well a new continent, a new diet. More about that later. We have finally left the UK on our return leg of the tour. We touched down in smoggy San Paulo, ready for the plane to be refuelled before heading on to Buenos Aires. However we noticed that not all was right. The airline staff were asking people in Business Class questions and they were getting off the plane. Interesting. Eventually we were told the remainder of the flight had been cancelled due to a strike in the Buenos Aires airport. A local behind us, said "Welcome to South America". British Airways transferred us to a 5 star hotel in San Paulo for a few days, until we could get the next available flight to continue our journey. We weren´t complaining as it was all at ... read more

After a 48 hour stop over in Ipswich (home) we were back on the road, this time headed for Africa and the exotic city of Marrakesh. On our arrival we went straight to the hotel and found ourselves a guide to take us around the souks for an afternoon of shopping, and a look around the medina. Our first impression of Marrakesh was how polluted and expensive it is, we were warned that it was likely to cost more than we expected but nothing prepared us for the UK prices combined with second world standards. But not to worry as we were there for the experience, and where else in the world can you find yourself holding a rose from a stranger whilst there´s a cobra at your feet. We remained in Marrakesh for three nights ... read more

Firstly, sorry about no blog entries, but we didn't hear any complaints. However, we thought a quick update after a weekend in Cardiff might be in order. We arrived in Cardiff late Friday night after a week of camping around south east England and checked into the lovely Novotel. We didn't have tickets for the game as it was sold out and they were 300 pounds on eBay, but we thought being there would be the next best thing (You can stop laughing). The Dangleberries had picked up a new member - Roy "Peter" Orbison, bringing the band up to three. The comforts of the hotel were a welcome relief for some members, after a hard week on the road. Walking around Cardiff on match day was something to behold, a great atmosphere all building up ... read more

Koh Samui & Ko Tao

Published: August 8th 2007Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao

After the ride to the airport the plane ride was somewhat subdued. We arrived on Ko Samui early Friday morning and decided to stay at Chaweng beach, initially we were a bit disappointed with the beach as the tide was in making it very narrow, and the only way you can access the sand is by going through resorts. It didn't take long though until we found a couple of beach bars and moved into island mode, by the time the tide was out the beach was transformed and we were very merry and ready to find some dinner. Our search for food led us back along the now big sandy beach, to the many open air seafood restaurants. However being the budget conscious backpackers that we are, we opted for the free BBQ which was ... read more

King's Birthday

Published: August 8th 2007Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok

The flight from Phom Penh didn't take long at all, before we knew it we were settling into our hotel which was just off Kao San road. We spent the evening on Kao San Road watching the locals participating in the King's birthday celebrations; it was lovely to see everyone being so patriotic and happy. The next day we went for a suit fitting and hung out back at Kao San as we had to leave for the airport at 4am. Our taxi arrived about 10mins late which was soon made up by the 160km speeds he was doing, it was without a doubt the fastest trip to the airport we have ever had. Usually we would be really appreciative of this, but given we were in the backseat of a Toyota Camry with no seatbelts ... read more

Once again we were up before the sun and headed for a new destination, this time it was via a somewhat dubious looking bus and the city was Phnom Penh. The trip took 6 hours and featured loud Khmer kung fu movies, a dodgy road stop with outdoor squat huts and food stores selling fried bugs (not for arachnophob's), local fruit and other unidentifiable food stuffs. And last but not least Karaoke videos in broken English at full volume instead of a radio. Matt didn't think the trip was too bad but Trace has it at the top of her list as worst bus trip EVER. Luckily we had organised for someone to meet us at the bus station and take us to a hotel as it was crazy, there were people everywhere, they were jumping ... read more

After a good flight we touched down in Siem Riep, the airport could easily be mistaken for a resort, at 5 months old it is in stark contrast to the rest of the country. There were very few passengers passing through with loads of staff to help, Matt went straight through customs but Trace was held up for ages. The officer just kept looking from her to her passport and giving her a funny look, eventually he let her through. It was after this that Matt informed her that the large red "security checked" sticker had come off her bag, and was clearly stuck across the middle of her chest. From the airport it was a $5 cab ride into the city and onto our hotel which was new and overlooked the neighbour’s yard which contained ... read more

We arrived in Luang Prabang early evening and found a nice guest house which was absolute luxury compared to the night before, on first impression the town was just lovely, and it is so peaceful. There is a night market everyday selling all kinds of handy crafts and food, made by the local people. We were so tired however that all we did was walk for a bit, eat, and listen to some Aussie guy trying to pull an American girl, by telling her how he was "in training to be a jackaroo, but as it takes 10 years he was currently dividing his time 50/50 between university and travelling" and how "it was kinda like being a cowboy". We're guessing this approach worked as we saw them together the next day. The next morning we ... read more

We’ll the time has come to say goodbye to Chip, he was due back at the refuge and we were on our way to Lao. We organised our visas for Lao at the Thai border town of Chiang Khong when we arrived. It was all very simple and only took as long as we spent eating our pad thai. As the Mekong River acts as a natural border the crossing its self just involves paying a fee and having your passport stamped on one side, jumping in a long boat crossing to the other side and doing the same. The border town on the Lao side is a dump, everything was over priced, the place we stayed at was cheap but they were constantly trying to scam everyone, everything from their offer to change currency, internet ... read more
