Thursday 22nd May As we left the "fair" city of Nimes behind, each side of the road produced scrubby, struggling, unhealthy looking plants. The sun was shining, which was a hopeful sign, as we looked for an improvement on yesterday. The trip along the motorway was very brief and we left it after ten or so minutes on the way to the Pont du Gard. The Pont du Gard is the remaining part of an old Roman aqueduct that used to provide water for the people of Nimes. Built around 50AD, it carried water from the spring, Source d' Eure in Uzes, across the River Gardon, which eventually flows into the Rhine, to the city of Nimes 50km away. At the highest point the top of the aqueduct is more than 30m above the river below.
