Bilbao and back home

Published: October 30th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Herefordshire

26th-30th Oct Bilbao old town was interesting and 'tapas crawling' was great, especially when we inadvertently found ourselves in the seedier end of town- felt quite out of place without a piercing or a tattoo and briefly toyed with the idea of getting one! But the highlight of Bilbao was the brilliant Gugenheim museum. I've used the term 'awe inspiring' alot on this journey and this was another time when the term applied. Our regret was that the others had already left and couldn't share it too. The architecture was amazing, from the organic lines of its titanium outer shell to the central atrium, where the only straight line is the floor and a vast curved glass elevator sweeps up to the galleries and walkways. The best exhibit for me was a whole roomful of Richard ... read more

Almost done

We had a wonderful and restful time at Paul and Debbie´s house in Sierra do Piscarea. Memorable times were the magnificent sunsets from the terrace, the wild wild waves of Praia do Sago, sundaylunch of Cozido at ´Ó Auzol´, the charming hilltop town of Obidos,´Shrimps in Garlic´, sunbathing and swimming Sao Martino ......and of course the company of old friends, 2 of whom we took to Lisbon airport and two more who left to brave the strikes and revolts of france en route for Calais. Now we are two! Tom and I stayed for a couple of days in Potrugal, then ventured into the hinterland of Spain. What sights we have seen! Forests, plains, mountains, vineyards and scrubland with huge precarious boulders eruptingfrom the ground. We have seen Kites and eagles. boar in oak forestsand black cattle roaming ... read more

Portugal

I´nt Portugal fab!!! This is our second week in Portugal now and despite not understanding a word anyone says we are having a super time. After a night by the sea at Isala Cristina we crossed the impressive border at a suspension bridge over a dried river bed. There was almost immediately gentler scenery, lush green dotted with white houses. We stayed in a lovely house just outside Tavira, surrounded by olive trees with a view to the sea. Highlights include a bucks fizz breakfast at 10:10:10 on the 10/10/10 ; the enchanting Santa Luzia with its wading birds, little train, magnificent fish restuarant and magical beach; Pojo Inferno- a waterfall into an emerald green pool where I would have loved to have skinny dipped but was already in trouble for having a muddy bum ........and ... read more

Spain was good

Day 24 Time to leave the city and make our way south to our next resting place, Can Gordei. Slight problem, after eating breakfast and packing the cars, Tom’s car is hemmed in, the owner of the offending vehicle has parked and gone off into the city. Phone call from reception and a promise to return, coffee and endless waiting eventually results in success, the owner returns and is surprisingly mystified as to the problem his parking has caused. We leave the city by a slightly different route to that selected by Tom Tom and make our way to our villa with pool. The journey is easy but not if you ignore the instructions of both navigator and TomTom. However, a successful phone call back to England confirms we are sitting outside our destination, as if ... read more

Spain!

Day 23 Our second day in Barcelona and we are off to be part of the festival and see some of the sights not visited yesterday. Our first challenge, the Barcelona Metro and working out just what ticket we need to buy to get to the La Rambla. The second challenge to find the square that is home to the dance of the Giants; we followed the crowd and what an amazing experience it was, numerous bands and many many tall models dancing to Catalan music. At the end of the parade we split and went our separate ways, only to discover Sally was the only one with information on the events of the day. We all have our own little private memories before meeting again to watch the parade and finish the day with ... read more

Spain Day 21

Published: September 22nd 2010Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Begues

Very special day today as we crossed the pyrenees...very winding mountain road affording stunning views and the sound of cow bells...stopped at 5500 feet to take in air and mountain water from a spring. Descended into Tossas for a coffee before continuing to our destination...Sant Quirza del Borosa- a one-horse town with no eateries. Little did we know what was to follow. Having booked into the hotel, two of the three rooms allocated were not cleaned. This was rectified, only to result in water pouring from the light socket in the bathroom of one room...meaning a change of room. The newly allocated electronic keys then failed to open the door...oh what fun!!! Having ascertained that there was absolutely nowhere else to eat in town, we had great fun, after a bottle of cava, convincing a genial barman ... read more

Day 17 and 18 AND NOW WE ARE SIX! Stood at the arrivals gate at Toulouse airport holding a sign with the legend “ Pensions and Zimmers Tours. Mr and Mrs Else” like the holiday reps etc do……Oh how they laughed! Cracked a bottle of very special champagne we bought back in Ambonnay and has a leisurely alfresco lunch. I witnessed a big green lizard catch and eat a smaller lizard - nature red in tooth and claw. That evening we ate a magnificent home cooked cassoulet and chatted ‘til way past cocoa and hot waterbottle time On our last day at La Celeste four of us went to Carcassonne whilst the remainder walked into the village, picked wild fennel and made a nourishing soup for the evening meal. Packed and prepared for the next leg ... read more

Days 10 -16

Day 10 After the disappointment of Cap D’Agde the stay at Peret restored our vision of rural France. Having left Peret we quickly came across a local wine cooperative and bought boxes of red and rose wine without traditional tasting. Drove through Languedoc to Bedarieux for coffee, followed by lunch, three ‘platters’ of tomato, ravioli and cheese. Arrived at La Celeste, our accommodation for the next week, just after 4pm and later cooked our first meal for some time after a swim in the pool. Covering the pool at night will be a military operation! Day 11 First none driving day so far after late breakfast and early morning swim. Weather rather cloudy at first but eventually the sun came out and allowed us all to swim and enjoy the sun. It’s exciting to watch the ... read more

Days 8 & 9 Two wonderful days interrupted only by crap rooms in Cap D'Agde. The Carmargue Thursday. Hours spent birdwatching and wandering What a truly beautiful wilderness. Then went to the coast. Yesterday we spent the morning swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach before motoring into the counryside to find a B&B Liz Bloxham recommended. What a place! Wonderful hospitality, stunning views, infinity pool to laze in after a hot day. Could this be heaven? May well be off line for a few days now. ... read more

Day 7 Just thought, you don't know who's writing do you? Here's a little quiz, you have to guess each day who has written what! Last night we got to be about as rebellious as we get now we are in our dotage. In the sixties we joined the revolution and manned the barricades, now we giggle as we break hotel rules and picnic in our room! Last night was another one of incredible thunder and lightning with the concomitant floods in the carpark and garden. We walked into the nearest village and had coffee beneath plane trees in the square then walked through a tunnel up the hill behind the village - the views were stunning down to the Rhone.{ See Sue Bish- we can do tunnels and views too! Later we drove to Le ... read more
