The Lad Traveller

I'm a 23-year old graduate who's spent the last 2 years travelling and writing for a travel magazine. My aim is to create a blog and website that focuses on 'real' travelling and provides advice and information about some of the more unusual aspects of backpacking.

Ah, sex while travelling. The elephant in the room. And by that, I don’t mean you’ve brought home a fat chick, I mean that it’s a difficult subject. There are a large amount of people who go travelling to broaden their mind, see the world, etc., but there are also a large amount of people who are looking for sex. Many people rightly or wrongly believe that hostels around their world are full of horny girls looking for easy sex; in my experience, they weren’t. Well, not when I was there, anyway. The problem with sex while travelling is that it’s not always convenient or easy to find a safe place. Here are a couple of techniques and tips I’ve picked up (mainly through watching other people!): 1. The Fort Forts have been around for thousand ... read more

Travelling gives you the chance to do some pretty amazing things. The problem is, telling people about them makes you seem like a smug git. You definitely want to avoid being the sort of person who sets a Facebook status like 'Just off to scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef...tough life...' You know, the kind of person who has about 3,000 bands on their wrists, a 4-inch beard and a t-shirt with 'Beer Lao' on it. With that mind, I'll do my best not to sound to travellery (it's a word!) when I tell you a story from my time in Nepal. The Chitwan National Park may boast some of the most verdant vegetation this side of the Cretaceous Period, but so far we’d found the lack of animals slightly disconcerting. Our safari guides had ... read more

There are tons of great things about the Philippines, but by far away the best of them is the fact that inhabitants are called Filipinos. I like the fact that they thought ‘Well, the Philippines is a nice name but Philippino would be a bit of a bugger to spell. Let’s just settle for Filipino.’ It makes things a lot easier for writers like me. The Philippines isn’t part of the traditional backpacker’s route. The country, which consists of over 7,000 islands, lies to the west of Vietnam and to the north of Indonesia. Its location, and the fact that the country is only accessibe by plane has to be the reason that most backpackers stay away, because the Philippines offers plenty in terms of sun, sea and nightlife. Unfortunately, while the Philippines can offer breathtakingly ... read more

If the word barter conjures up images of 16th century peasants trading magic beans for cows, then you may want to read on. Bartering is a very important part of life in Asia. The simple fact is that Asia is cheap. Hostels, restaurants, taxis, prostitutes…everything you could possibly want is much, much cheaper than in the Western World. The problem is, the locals know this. They know, they know you know, and they may even know that you know that they know you know. Trust me, I know. Typically, if you get into a taxi in any Asian countries, the following scenario will play out. The taxi driver will suggest a price that is ludicrously high. Take Phnom Penh for example. You can probably hire a taxi driver to take you around the city, stopping off ... read more

Tales from Hanoi Snake Village. To some, it sounds like hell; to others, the least imaginatively named area in the world; but to us, it represented the ultimate test of our manliness. Just getting to the village was hard enough; taxi drivers looked at us fearfully before driving away while locals claimed they’d never heard of such a place. Finally, two daredevil motorcycle drivers agreed to take us, and we were off. I wasn’t sure if we should be worried by their grins. The village was hardly welcoming; cramped, dingy streets led to dilapidated houses. The place seemed deserted; there were no street lamps or lights on in the homes. It was like a town from a scary movie; you know, the sort of ones that are usually called Horrorville or Screamsborough. ... read more

The Lad Traveller - a blog made by people who don't go on a night out with their notebook in their back-pocket. Travelling websites are full of great advice right? I mean, just flick through your copy of Lonely Planet and you'll see page after page of useful information. Useful, but useful in the same way that a skirting board is useful; I'm sure it it does a job, but when it comes to actual practicality, it's really just a load of wasted tree. That's where The Lad Traveller comes in. This is where people come for travel information that they really need; you won't find information on the indigenous tribes of South America or how old the Borneo Rainforest is. What you will find is poorly researched, lazily written and vaguely offence articles on subjects ... read more
