The John and Sarah Show's Guestbook

5th June 2011

Totally random, but was reminiscing with an old travel friend on a past trip to Latin America, I decided to do a google search for Remy the French captain from Cartagena. I was happy to see someone had written about a similar experience. We rode to Panama with Remi and his girlfriend a month before you did and it sounds like the experience (and the customer service) was pretty similar. I never slept in the hot cabin, instead opting to stay on watch in the cool night and was nearly as drunkenly delirious as our captain. One morning Remi awoke and asked for coffee, which somehow we all were drinking. He grabbed a cup that was filled with last night's wine. I said, "Remy, no es cafe. Es vino." His response, "El mismo." Spoken like a true drunken sailor. Safe travels.

Paraty and Ilha Grande, yes!
Hi John and Sara - it's Saturday, just finished breakfast with Elizabeth and Charlie, they could not wait to tell us about your latest entry, as they knew of our love for the area you described: our Oregon license plate is... PARATY! In the 3 years we lived in Brazil - São Vicente, about 200 miles south of Paraty, we travelled to that little village of Paraty often and to Ilha Grande once - your descriptions of those places is so wonderful - even that blue and white sweets cart... over our many visits we saw the red haired boy who takes care of the cart, grow and grow but always with his very shy smile! The concrete jungle of São Paulo, also scared us in the beginning but as we had to drive to it once a week, we ultimately learned what to avoid. Your pictures of Mercado Municipal gave us "saudades".... São Paulo boasts the greatest number of Italian and Japanese restaurants of any city in the world outside of those countries. Huge populations in Italian and Japanese parts of town make that a fascinating place to visit. Travel safe and thanks for the blog!

Drinking moderation
I heard the same thing in Italy, "Italians don't drink do get drunk they just sip on some wine all night". So not true, I witnessed many drunk Italians on a daily basis hitting on all the American girls in my program. Sounds similar. P.S. Can we get some Sasha experiences added to the travel blog

It's about time!!!!
I decided ya'll had fallen off the face of the earth! Your graduation car/gift was returned to me and you didn't return my calls, sooooooooooo I wondered what had become of the two of you. It is good to know that everything is fabulous. We are all doing pretty well. Aaron just finished his comprehensive exams and is starting on his dissertation. Spencer and Amy just moved to San Diego and are living over in Pt. Loma. Spencer still has the same old phone number, he is attached to a submarine stationed at Pt. Loma. Keep having fun! Love and kisses to you and Sarah

Christ, PEN-GINS?!?! Sarah knows how much I effing love those little flippered rascals. Awesomeness. And double kudos for your advanced placement in Spanish - way to represent Americans as cultured, bilingual artisans. Questioning stereotypes and constructing cultural bridges? All in a day's work....
