We (Joe and I) left on schedule at 3.30am (4th Feb) from my house in a Mercedes cab headed for Luton Airport. Neither of the missuses came up with the goods as far as providing us with cars go! Cab was £50 which worked out cheaper than getting a cab to St Pancras then a train to Luton. We managed to get seats by the emergency doors so we had extra leg room. The flight went well and took about 3 hours and 20 mins. We arrived in Marrakech at about 9.20am, it was cloudy and it looked as if there had recently been heavy rain, but it wasn't too cold and as the day went on it brightened up and became quite hot. We were met by a driver who drove us in another Mercedes ... read more

At last I'm on the final leg of my Masters in Development Management with the Open University. My final dissertation needs to be handed in by 16th April. My research was carried out in Uganda, the title is "What are the best ways to care for orphans and other vulnerable children in Uganda: focussing on the case of Bushfire, a children's village". If you want to read the full 28 pages drop me an email! I spent 2 weeks in Uganda staying at Bushfire.... read more

This was our (Joe, Andrew, Mike and Gerry) third annual trip. Last year we went to Andalusia in Spain and in 2007 we went to Lamezia in Italy. As much as people slag off Ryanair, you can't beat them for price and they're ideal for a 4 day long weekend to somewhere obscure but reasonably warm in the middle of winter. This year we went to Trapani in Sicily from 28th Feb - 3rd March 2009. Joe secured a friend's 20 year old sporty Toyota to drive us to Luton airport, setting off at 3.45am! It had a very low back and it managed to give me a crick in my neck and both legs! The flight took 2hrs 50mins to Trapani on the west coast of Sicily about an hour's drive to Palermo, the capital. ... read more

A dawning realisation that the pineapples I planted over 18 months ago would be getting close to harvest and ever-increasing airfares made me get my finger out and take action in booking a flight to Uganda before it was too late. Denise couldn't get the time off so I travelled on my own. Here's my notes of the journey taken from my diary: "On plane somewhere over Ethiopia. That strange sense of destiny rises up again. Airline meals - that bouncing bomb effect of explosions of delight at consuming each morsel! What is it that produces such paroxysms of pleasure? Don't know. Partly the false sense of getting something for nothing perhaps?! Excellent journey - 3 seats to myself, charming Kenyan Airways staff (not-the-all-too-often-pretentious-smiles-but-raised-eyebrows-when-you're-out-of-sight-crew). Amazing too that this ticket has cost the same as it did ... read more

Thurs 22nd May 2008 - Left Deptford 4pm, drove to Dumfries with Nairn and his son Django, Travelodge, family room (£55). Text from Den (my wife) on motorway to say Ricky (my brother) caught up in Al Queda bomb attack in restaurant (Giraffe - Jewish company apparently) in Exeter! Arrived Dumfries about 11.15pm. Django slept most of the way. Weather drizzly in Scotland. Phoned Ricky who was cooking in the kitchen when the bomb went off in the toilet, thinking it was a light bulb exploding they carried on cooking, later police came in and told them to evacuate, "....but what about my pies in the oven?" says Ricky! Bomber is the only one to get blown up, Ricky's mate takes his photo on his mobile then sends it to Ricky's mobile, Ricky phones The Sun ... read more
