We discovered that being on a night flight and arriving at Cape Town for 8.00am means you're the only flight in the terminal and security and baggage reclaim gets over and done with in 10 minutes - if only all airports were like this ! After navigating the car rentals and the Cape Town rush hour we arrived safely at 52 De Wet Road Bantry Bay. If you wish for opulence in your life look no further than here and if your particularly prescient spouse also arranges a massage on arrival after the 11 hour flight then this is the place. A frustrating low cloud and cold wind meant that we couldn't make it further up Table Mountain than the hotel itself. So instead we drove to the spectacular Hout Bay and Chapmans Peak Drive - ... read more

So we are heading off in the next few days and really excited - will miss 2/5 of the bunch who need to stay at home for uni and jobs which is a shame. As ever great debate amongst the girls as to the wardrobe to take and great anguish by me who as ever can't find his paper driving licence... We are off to Cape Town at first and will do some touristy things like Table Mountain and more reflective things like Robben Island hoping to go down to the Cape to see some endangered penguins as well as some whale watching and dolphin surfing if we are lucky. Then off to Franschhoek to see the spectacular mountains and test the wineries - a real test for us but we will try and rise to ... read more

Spent a great evening yesterday watching the rays in the ocean. There was a Whiptail Stingray and Black Blotched Stingray swimming together and tussling for food. The Whiptail ray also had traveller fish attached to it incredibly this fish stayed attached even in the tussle for food. This was followed by watching the guys place buoys out for the Dhonis moored up in the lagoon and then they enjoyed an evening of Maldivian cricket on the beach followed by yet another lovely sunset.... read more

I am not sure if it's because we remain becalmed with virtually no breeze and little current in the ocean or because the temperatures are getting hotter but the last two evenings we have seen two fantastic and utterly different sunsets. One from the Dhoni as we sailed the atoll islands changed colours all the time with beautiful shades of pink and coral reflecting on the clouds and the surface of the ocean. As the sun sank we saw incredible silhouettes of islands. Yesterday the cloud seemed to auger for a limited sunset but in the last 10 minutes we saw incredible colours emerge from behind the clouds and on to the ocean. It was simply stunning. We sat on the deck and watched one painting after another unfold - brilliant!... read more

Yesterday was stunningly hot - the breeze of the last few days disappeared and the whole atoll and island was becalmed. The sea was like a mill pond and the visibility in the water was terrific with views of Surgeonfish, Cornetfish, Wrasse and Unicorn fish crystal clear. We decided to go on a Donhi in the evening to watch the sunset and search for dolphins. A Donhi is a Madivian boat - wooden up to 50 feet long originally sail powered now motored. With a carved prow and stern with flags astern. We set out across the atoll to the neighbouring islands about 5pm local time. The ocean was astonishingly still and calm and the colour of a deep blue sapphire. Within an hour we had seen dolphins -just a few swimming close by - Dhoni's ... read more

Two encounters with the local fauna yesterday. One good one not so good. We have seen lots of jellyfish in the last few days as the currents have brought in lots - most of the time they are small - about 5cms in diameter or so - clear with a blue central piece. Tricky to see when you're swimming or snorkelling but the stings aren't too bad and some rapidly applied vinegar does the trick. However yesterday we saw a huge purple one - about 30 or 40 coms in diameter - floating gracefully in the water but with a pretty serious kick - later it washed up on the beach before the tide rescued it and returned it to the ocean. The other encounter was with the local stork yesterday. It visits most days and ... read more

Whilst we have been on holiday Cob has been over in Romania working for a charity helping to build houses and accommodation for families. He initially had a couple of days acclimatisation to Bucharest before heading off to Rasnov and Brasov. After an eventful train trip - for some reason Rasnov station is named something else ! - they got where they wanted to be but found the hostel fully booked so ended up sleeping on a local church floor or the duration. Working as a group with the charity leaders they helped build extensions and accommodation for some families who were working hard for themselves but where for example one of the parents had died. Conditions were pretty basic but the contribution Cob and the others made was important and of course Cob and the ... read more
