2 – 3rd Sept ’12 Houston, Texas After a long drive we arrived in Houston around tea time, so no chance to do any sightseeing today apart from trying to find somewhere to eat. We are staying just a couple of miles down the road from the Johnson Space Center and located a Red Lobster not far away. However it is Labour Day weekend and the queue was spilling out down the path so we gave that idea up and ended up at the Chinese near the motel. Next morning we were up bright and early to make the most of our day in Houston and our top priority was Nasa so off we headed to the Space Center. We were there on the dot of it opening and paid our dosh, got the map and ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » San Antonio August 30th 2012

30th-31st Aug ’12 San Antonio, Texas Davey, Davey Crockett King of the Wild Frontier! Just had to get that out of the way as that song has been stuck in my head for days now! So we arrived in San Antonio after a hair-raising race track of a journey on various interstates as we approached the area. We stayed at the Travelodge on Broadway and 4th street which meant we were really close to the River Walk and The Alamo and after changing rooms as the one we were given wouldn’t lock we were ready to go out and find some tea. We had decided to save all The Alamo stuff for the next day as it was 5ish when we arrived, so we went to the River Walk instead. This is a loop of river ... read more

28th Aug ’12 Roswell to Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico So kind of sorry to leave Roswell, even if there isn’t much more to see – I would go back to the museum again and watch all the films if we had been staying, but onwards to Carlsbad Caverns. It only took about two hours to reach the turn off for the caverns and the scenery on the way wasn’t particularly interesting. The road winds up into the hills which are dotted with small bushes and then you reach the visitor centre. So now we were right in the Chihuahua Desert and it was strange to think there was a whole subterranean world of caves beneath our feet. There were various tours you could do to see different parts of the cave system, Howard wanted to do ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Roswell August 27th 2012

27th Aug ’12 Roswell, New Mexico Roswell is much larger than I expected, as we have arrived late yesterday we haven’t looked around properly yet, saving that for today, but we did pass McDonalds and Looci, it no longer looks like a space ship! I’m gutted!! They have built a kids play area onto it, how dare they?!! But the lamp posts all have alien heads so that’s good and Arby’s welcomes aliens! So it’s another blistering hot day in New Mexico so I don’t think my tin foil alien hat will see much action unless I want my brains well cooked, so it’s a good job I got a photo last night while I was outside watching the skies! Main Street seems to be where all the UFO shops and action is (the rest of ... read more

25th Aug ’12 Silver City to Deming, New Mexico Today we drove to see the Gila Cliff Dwellings which were about 44 miles north of Silver City. The journey was on small winding roads which went through forests and gradually climbed up onto cliff tops before winding down into the valley again. It was a beautiful but hot day and the countryside was really pretty. To get to the cliff dwellings you had to walk up a narrow valley alongside a stream and then climb 100s of steps up in the cliff side. Luckily there were bits of shade but by the time we got up to the caves it was such a relief to get out of the sun. It was very similar to Mesa Verde but on a smaller scale, with 5 main caves ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Tombstone August 23rd 2012

23rd Aug ’12 Tucson to Tombstone So we saddled up and rode on out of town, we had about 70 miles of desert to cross and the sun was high and hot! There was little to see but rocks, scrubby bush, mountains a ways off on the horizon and the shimmering heat on the trail. Luckily our car has air conditioning and we had plenty of drinks in the cool bag. Still it was a relief to pull into Tombstone – The Town Too Tough To Die! Our first stop was right on the outskirts of town, at the Boothill Graveyard – so named as most of the inhabitants died with their boots on. It was free to visit but for $3 you could get a leaflet with the layout and information on who was buried ... read more

20th Aug ’12 Hollywood to Palm Springs Today we had to collect the hire car and all we knew was it was to be picked up at LAX airport. So we got the metro to Union Station and the Flyaway bus to the airport, luckily the driver knew that we should get off at terminal one for the car rental places. After leaping onto a hertz bus and being told we needed to get off and go downstairs, we finally found the right place and the right Hertz bus. Soon we had our car and began negotiating our way out of LA. Luckily Howard had sussed the route out last night and using his written instructions we managed it really well, which was a big relief. So we had the air con blasting and were on ... read more

17th Aug ’12 San Francisco to Los Angeles, California The CA Shuttle bus that we were taking today was due to arrive at 11.45am, we were there very early waiting and it eventually arrived at 12.45! All us hot and hassled passengers got on. There was no explanation as to why it was late. We were the first of 4 pick-ups in the city and then it was direct to Hollywood. Once we got to the last pick up and the bus was full a very jolly Mexican man got on and thanked us all for using his bus service. He then welcomed us to California and ‘our wonderful country of the United States’, no one said anything, he then explained that we would only stop once, ‘at a Burger King in the middle of nowhere’ ... read more

14th Aug ’12 Seattle to San Francisco We caught the train out to the airport for our flight to San Francisco. Everything was on time, we were in a brand new virgin plane with inflight entertainment systems on every seat back, the only problem was they charged for every movie, tv programme etc and even for the headphones. We arrived at about 4pm and took the airport train to the BART station, the train to Powell Station and then walked 3 blocks uphill and another 3 along to find the Halcyon Hotel on Geary and Jones. Our room is right at the front so you can hear everything that is going on, on the street. We dropped our bags off and went for a walk and it turns out we are over the road from the ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Olympia August 12th 2012

12th Aug ’12 Centralia to Olympia We were only going about 20 miles today! Hooray!! It was either stay here or have an extra night in Seattle, but as we have spent quite a bit of time there already we decided to try somewhere new instead. I even managed to get a haircut – no more lopsided scraggly knotted hair! Howard isn’t happy he reckons it’s too short, well I must admit I got a shock too when I saw how much she cut off but its in much better condition. Anyway we are staying in Olympia which is the capital of Washington State at the Olympia Plaza Hotel – which sounds grand but is actually more like an overgrown motel but with better furnishings. So we walked all over down town, which was very interesting ... read more
