Geo: 45.3247, 8.42378Since we were staying here a 2nd night, we had the whole day to do with as we pleased. We could drive to the mountaintop finish, or a hill on the way up to I, we could aim for a feed zone (though this was a short stage, and didn't have an official one), or we could watch the race come through town (there was a sprint point here). We decided to keep our amazing parking spot, and not drive anywhere. Since the race wouldn't be here until at least 3 pm, we had all morning to do something crazy, like take in some local sights as if we were tourists. We walked over to the Basilica di Sant'Andrea, which was really awesome. There are some amazingly preserved frescoes, and it's the first place where I've ... read more

Geo: 45.3246, 8.42369As this was the first day when our hotel didn't include breakfast, we decided just grab something on our way to find the team buses. A little bakery was on the way, so with a couple of croissants and 2 cafes in hand, breakfast was served -- and consumed on the steps of a church in the plaza. After following the Tour de France once, and the USA Pro Challenge a few times, we've come to the conclusion that the start of a stage is a much better place for meeting cyclists. Since we have Gnorm the Gnome with us, and he's a big cycling fan, our plan was to try to meet a few of the riders that we haven't had an opportunity to meet before. The 2nd bus to pull in was that of ... read more

Geo: 44.6981, 10.6308Today began with breakfast in the hotel. The breakfast was nice enough, but what is it about small Italian hotels and completely silent breakfast rooms? It makes me a little crazy to hear myself eat, never mind the strangers at the next table. If I ever run a B&B, there will be some music in the breakfast room.Since the Giro was scheduled to come through town that afternoon (right past our hotel -- howzzat for planning?), the road that we'd use to leave town would be closed until 4:30, so we moved our car out of the hotel car park, and into a parking lot just across the canal. Before we could sit back and enjoy the day's activities, we needed to take care of a little business. The company who rented our bikes to us ... read more

Geo: 44.6984, 10.63Any day that brings you a view of the Italian countryside from your hotel window can't be all bad. This morning fit that description just dandy. Throw open the wooden window covers, and gaze out onto rolling hills, all green and a tiny touch dewy. Our goal for the day was to catch the Giro stage 11 as the boys tackled the first categorized climb. The Passo della Calla is a "cat 3", meaning it's not all that terrible, comparatively. 16 km in length, about 850 meters (about 2,790 feet) in elevation gain, and an average grade of 5.2%. Easy peasy (if you're a pro). After stopping at a local grocery store to grab something for a lunch (peanut butter and bread, with a banana, 2 Cokes and 2 huge bottles of water), we were on our way ... read more

Geo: 43.7224, 11.7673This day was a sandwich. A great beginning, a great ending, with kind of a mishmash in between. We woke up in a room that reminded us "Hey -- we're in a castle!" That was pretty great. We took some time before breakfast to just walk around the property, and see what we couldn't really see the night before. And that was a fantastic grounds, with delightful little nooks and paths everywhere you looked. And the birds -- oh, the birds! You've never heard so much joyful-sounding singing.I took some time to blog from a table overlooking the Perugia valley, before we went in to breakfast. What a view!We made our way to Foligno, the start city for Stage 10 of the Gro d''Italia, and our first stage. We'd splurged a little on tickets to the ... read more

Geo: 43.1073, 12.4194Meanwhile, back in the tiny Yotel room....I zonked out for a solid 3 hours or so, and Dejo got some reasonable rest as well. When we woke up to the alarm at about 7, Dejo was feeling quite a bit better, and we made our way to the terminal. Or rather, the lounge.May I just say, the Air France staff was simply lovely and terribly helpful, just all around? I'm a fan.We had a little breakfast, and then moved to a couple of armchairs to wait out the morning. Now we had a little re-planning to do.The plan had been to land in Rome, get to our hotel near the Colosseum, have a tiny tour of the area, and the next morning, take a train to Orvieto where we would pick up the car, and some ... read more

Geo: 49.0049, 2.57682Where were we? Oh, yes. Passport control. We missed our 9:15 flight from Paris to Rome. So, we went to the Air France desk in Terminal 2F (a place were about to get quite familiar with), and got booked onto the 1:05 pm flight. Because we had business class tickets, we were allowed into the lounge, which was a really great thing. Beverages of all sorts, food, snacks, comfy air chairs, and power plugs. We settled in for a few hours, had a little lunch, and waited for our flight.Once we got boarded on said flight, things were looking good -- on our way to Rome!As we were taxiing toward takeoff, Dejo looks at me and says "I'm feeling light-headed."Oh, crap.We had a little incident in early 2016, on our way to Seattle, where he felt ... read more

Geo: 49.0037, 2.57798We'd had our flight to Rome booked for several months. Denver-Rome (by way of JFK), then back from Milan. We booked a higher class of coach ticket than normal, so that they were upgradeable.I was able to use my miles (which have been building up for several years) to bump us up to business class on the outbound. My thinking was this: We have one afternoon and a little of the next morning in Rome, and I was hoping we could arrive with some decent dozing done, so that we were better rested than we usually are after an international flight. We got to the airport a bit later than we'd like, and learned en route that our flight out of Denver was delayed. Seems weather in NYC is affecting flights throughout the system. If we ... read more

Geo: 39.3759, -104.86Something that we were really glad for, when we followed the Tour de France, was our decision to rent bikes to take with us.Many times, it made way more sense to just park the campervan, and bike into/around town -- and it caused less stress (driving round some of these tiny roads can cause people who very much love each other to get a little snippy). And though we're renting a regular car, not a campervan, it still makes sense to have bikes. Plus, the idea of biking around the Italian countryside has a certain appeal, no?After sending inquiries to several bike shops or rental companies that I found online, I only got responses from 2.One quoted me a rate well over $1,000 for the use of 2 bikes, plus one-way fee (as we want ... read more

Geo: 39.3759, -104.86Quite contrary to our Tour de France trip, where we only planned a few places to stay ahead of time, this trip is entirely pre-planned.For the TdF, we rented a campervan, and while we more or less knew what general areas we'd aim for, we didn't know exactly where we'd be staying each night. For this trip, we decided to go a more traditional route, and rent a car, and stay in hotels or B&Bs along the way.Part of the reason for this decision was.....well.....Italy. We've heard the stories/rumours of driving in Italy, and decided it might not be as wise to try to drive a campervan along the roads of Italy. We also wanted to be certain of staying near important stage starts or finishes. So, we've got all hotels set, and today, we finalized the ... read more
