Nice cheap Ryan Air tickets and two students in need of a bit of travel combined to form a three day trip to Tuscany. Arriving at Pisa airport early Monday morning, myself and Colin spent most of the day walking round the town of Pisa. For both of us this was our first time in Italy so it was very exiting. It wasn’t long before we stumbled upon one of the most iconic structures in the Europe, the leaning tower of Pisa. Even is it wasn’t leaning I would have been impressed, but as it was you can hardly take your eyes off it. We then headed to Florence by train at a nice price of 5 euros. We spent the evening walking all round the city for miles and miles and saw the great sunset ... read more

Getting through the Cambodia - Laos border was an interesting experience which involved allot of arguing with border police/con men who wanted to charge us a little extra for their back pocket. For me this wasn’t really a big deal $2 dollars extra is not a large cost with the excitement of entering a new country. My comrades however were not as laid back and demanded a receipt for their $2 charge causing one of the guards to loose his cool and shout allot then storm off. The best bit however was that when Jason got his receipt he marched out the office and proceeded to urinate on the border gate in front of the guards! Quality entertainment. We switched transport in a small village just over the border; we had arranged to get all the ... read more

The flight to Phnom Penh from Bangkok gave us the opportunity to view from up high the uniqueness of this new country we were about to explore. Cambodia is unique in that from above its hard to tell where people actually live as the majority of the land seemed completely covered in water! Being the rainy season it appeared that all the farm land (paddy fields) were completely waterlogged and as the flight continued we were left wondering we were left wondering how much swimming we were going to have to do to get around (as it turned out water wasn’t the problem... it was the mud!). Arriving in Phnom Penh we were met (me and my friend Tim that is) at the airport by the Posnet family, a missionary family from the UK living in ... read more

Leaving Sydney early on the 21st of August, I flew on to Bangkok for the next stretch of my trip. I have been to Thailand before, living there as a child for three years, and spending a month or so there after leaving school and I was very exited to be back in this country that has so much appeal to me. I spent my first night in a hotel, thinking it would be nice after only staying in hostels for the past two months. I regretted it however wishing I had spent the extra money on something more worthwhile! The next day I attempted to phone Charia, a Thai lady whose family were friends with my parents and who (over email) had invited my to come and stay and work at the small "Rainbow House" ... read more

On the 22nd of June 2006 I left "sunny" Dunedin with the company of two of my NZ flatmates Kelsey and Laura and another friend Hilary, to head to another slightly larger island occupying the space between the Pacific and Indian oceans, Australia. We arrived in Sydney knackered after not sleeping the night before and headed to Bondi Beach where we stayed for a week. We spent the week exploring Sydney and lazing about on the beach enjoying many aussie kebabs and other delicacies. After Sydney myself and Kelsey split from the others and headed up the east coast, first of all diverting to the Blue Mountains, a stunning mountainous area of New South Wales. After spending a couple days there we booked a greyhound ticket that stretched all the way to Cairns and headed North. ... read more

I have recently had the privilege of spending 6 months in New Zealand, living, studying and traveling around the two amazing islands of this largely underestimated country. Arriving at the end of January the weather was phenomenal, and within 30 minutes of stepping off the plane I was charging full speed, through the Canterbury plains towards Arthur’s Pass in the Southern Alps. The ironic thing about New Zealand is that it’s so far away, thus creating heavy jet lag on arrival, but is one country where the last thing you ever want to do when you get there is sleep! The next few weeks would prove this to me as I traveled all round the south island, sea kayaking with seals, bungee jumping, climbing glaciers, watching sperm whales and generally exploring the country that offers attractions ... read more

April 20th 2006

In April 2006 I, along with 7 other comrades from Otago University decided to take to the roads and embark on an epic road trip from the south of the South Island, to the north of the North Island of New Zealand. With, 5 yanks, 1 canuk, 1 aussie, 1 scot, 2 un-roadworthy cars, 2 weeks, 9 destinations, 13000 feet of skydive, numerous maori's, 1 volcano, 10 dolphins, 5 police stops, (0 arrests ffew!), 3 beaches, 1 cave, a billion glowworms, 1 stray dog, 1 car crash, and alot of $2 "easy mac", it was a bit mad! With two old banger cars "Lucy and The General Layla" we set off at 9 pm (thanks to the girls) and just headed north. We got stopped by the Police after 5 minutes, the cops are actually really ... read more
