Day 10 - Darwin. / Kakadu Trip Today was going to be a quiet day. Well someone forgot to tell me that this was not the case. We started off going to church at the local Catholic Cathedral. A very impressive structure with big doors opened at either side of the building allowing the wind to work naturally through the building. Following this Paul and his two older kids went on a Segway Tour which was going to take a couple of hours. This proved to be a hit with the kids and in particular with my son Paul. He hasn’t stopped talking about the stuff he saw on this tour. Once we all met up again we headed off to Berry Springs Nature Park. This park has a very popular hot spring. The problem is ... read more

Day 9 - Darwin. / Kakadu Trip Our first full day in Darwin. Had not planned anything for today. Now this is unusual for me but you have to try new things and today was going to be a day of new experiences. The first was riding in an old Studebaker and the second was going to the footy. Let’s start with the Studebaker. Our first thing to do was go to the Darwin Information centre. This was a hive of activity and we booked a sunset tour over Darwin Harbour for next week but for today we (Tracey, Xavier and my wife and I) booked a WW11 Discovery Tour conducted in an old Studebaker truck. Paul, Lisa and the kids went to one of the water parks here in Darwin. Before we started this tour ... read more

Day 8 - Katherine to Darwin. / Kakadu Trip Today we move away from our new favourite home in Katherine to travel to the suburbs of Darwin. We only had 295kms to travel so we did not hurry to wake nor to get to our destination. A couple of things to highlight on this supposedly boring drive. In previous posts I have mentioned road kill. Now today we drove through cattle country where there were no fences along the Stuart Highway. This meant that there always is the possibility of cattle crossing the road. You see them occasionally but not very often. We saw a dead cow today on the side of the road which had been recently hit by a car and it had bloated. It is quite an awful sight to see a cow ... read more

Day 7 - Katherine / Kakadu Today is our last full day in Katherine and our last night here. Tomorrow we will head up to Darwin. This morning we had booked a Two Gorge tour of the Katherine Gorge (now called Nitmiluk Gorge). This tour took just over two hours to traverse two gorges On unsinkable barges (I hope they are unsinkable as there are crocodiles under the boat). We had to walk over from one Gorge to the other to get over the natural rock dams to get to the second barge (yes we had to get on two barges both on the way up and way back). The scenery was spectacular and we spotted 4 crocodiles. We were told by the guide they were freshwater species and therefore we would not be killed by ... read more

Day 6 - Katherine / Kakadu Well today was an exciting day to say the least. We did a cave tour, went to see a waterfall and swam in water with crocodiles. I also had a close encounter with a snake. Ok let me start. We had booked a tour of the local Cutta Cutta caves. The cave was 250 metres long and in most places was quite expansive. It had the normal stalagnite and stalactite formations. It also is home to over 5,000 bats. Let me just say I am happy we did not see any bats. They freak me out. In the wet season this cave is under water and is closed to the public. In the highest places the cave would have to be about 18 metres below the soil level above. I ... read more

Day 5 - Katherine. / Kakadu Today’s temperature was low 30s. Shorts and T/shirts time. We are not missing the Melbourne weather. Today we went to The Outback Experience show. We had booked this show from Melbourne based on online trip advisor reviews and the show did not disappoint. The show setting was a real stock horse and dog training farm. We were entertained by Tom Curtain two-time Australian Country Music Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinaire. He provided us with a taste on the inner workings of horse training and he used a real scenario and trained a horse in front of our very eyes. He also spent some time working with kelpie and border collie dogs. What a great show and it went for 3 hours. Lunch was in Katherine town and then after ... read more

Day 4 - Tennant Creek to Katherine Well well well, before I talk about this day I need to re cap on the previous night. You will remember I mentioned the fireworks. Well the local indigenous youth had decided to have some fireworks fun right next to our cabins. Let me just say their antics were crazy by any standard, even my son Paul was scared by their antics. All was quiet by Midnight although this was after a stray firework hit our cabin and lit the outside of our cabin up. No damage but certainly gave us a scare. Something to taok about in the morning. Today was a shorter run of 670km compared to the previous 1,000km runs. We stopped at quite a few pubs and roadhouses. All pretty much now starting to show ... read more

Day 3 - Erldunda to Tennant creek What a day and we haven’t even arrived at Katherine yet. Today’s trip took us from Erldunda roadhouse to Tennant Creek. A distance of 700km. We started off with breakfast at the Erldunda roadhouse. Well we don’t realise what we have in Melbourne until you don’t get it. We went into the breakfast area and out of the five cereal boxes only two had cereal in them and there was very little else. Let’s just say basic is basic. By 7 am we were off onto Stuart highway. In the first few minutes a road train passed us going in the other direction and I was sprayed by rocks. Windscreen copped it and I now have a cracked screen. Looks like a new windscreen is on the list for ... read more

Day 2 of our Kakadu Trip. We travelled from Port Augusta to a place called Erldunda which is on the corner of the Stuart and Lasseter Highways. This is the corner where everyone turns off the Stuart Highway to go to Uluru. We won’t be going to Uluru as we went last year. Well this leg of our journey was going to be a boring trip. Another 1000kms of basically straight road on reasonably flat semi arid country. We started off at 5am. Obviously in the dark. If you have travelled the Australian outback before you know NOT to travel in the dark as the kangaroos love to jump in front of you while you are driving. Luckily only one kangaroo jumped in front of Paul. He didn‘t hit it but I am sure he tried. ... read more

Day 1 - Left Melbourne at 5 am with 1,078km to drive. Nothing much in this trip although the first 200 hundred kilometers was a little scary due to fog. It was dark and foggy and the sun was still asleep so could not see much at all. Let me just say my attention level was so high I should have got a headache from concentrating too much. It was pretty funning thinking back to this morning. My wife was relaxed in the passenger seat having a catch up sleep and here I was fully awake with eyes popping out of my head with concentration to ensure I stay on the road and within site of Xavier‘s ute. I was just lucky Xavier was paving the way in front of me and all I had to ... read more
