Well we are off again. Preparing now for our trip to the Top end. This trip will take us to Katherine, Darwin and our ultimate destination Jabiru found in the Kakadu National Park. Now this sounds simple. Well maybe on paper but we have 3,774 kilometres (2,140 miles) to go just to get to Katherine. Our first three days will be on the road stopping at places like Port Augusta, Erldunda and Tennant Creek. Big drives in between each of those. Once in Katherine we will start the real holiday. In this entry i have included the maps showing where we are going.... read more

Well it is time for the Last post for this Trip. Day 16 is the day we arrive home. We started this final leg in Renmark South Australia. Normally we would stir at around 7.30am but we had agreed the night before that we would leave by 7.30am. Well we had a great and warm night sleep in spite of the outside temperature plummeting to -3 degrees. Thanks to the well insulated cabins we did not suffer the rath of this freezing temperature. Anyhow we left the cabins at 6.45am. Everyone, including the grandchildren had some sort of final burst of energy to get going early. By 9am we had reached Mildura and had crossed the border to Victoria with little fuss. Mildura had those famous arches and we could not help ourselves and stopped at ... read more

Hello again, day 15 and we are still driving South through the state of South Australia. We spent the afternoon and night at Port Augusta. Not impressed with this town. It is situated in a natural port but it does not have an active community surrounding the water. Not sure why but it appeared the water was surrounded by Industry. Anyhow we move off, again after a Macca's coffee. The surrounding landscape was very different to the dryness that we had been used to. We found rolling hills, lush meadows and trees, lot of trees. There was a patch that was desert like but it did not last long. We stopped at an old Historical mining town called Burra. Very quant and we stopped at the local bakery hoping we could find a traditional cream bun ... read more

Hi again, day 14 and we have commenced our Southbound journey. We slept overnight in a converted underground mine. No windows, no natural lights, 17 meters underground and no noise. Well we all slept in, even me. I stirred at 7.30am. This is unheard of. The lack of noise and natural light is unnatural but I could get used to. Anyhow everyone had a great sleep. We had breakfast at the hotel underground. The grandchildren had a ball, at least we didn't have to worry about the walls being damaged. We headed off for our drive to Port Augusta. First we stopped at the "Welcome Coober Pedy" sign and took some mandatory tourist shots. We had 535 km to drive and by 9am we were on the road. The road was uneventful, and we stopped quite ... read more

Hi again, we are still at Uluru this morning. An early start at 6 am, to go experience the sunrise washing over Uluru. By the time we left and got to the site it was about 7.05am and the sun was already peeking over the horizon. I set the go pro for 2 second auto shots and it took 800 photos . I will give these to my son Michael who will do his magic to collate the photos. I think I liked the sunset more. We then headed back to the cabins, finished packing and left for Coober Pedy. Now ever since we have been in the Red Centre I have been seeing lots of adverts on camel rides farms etc. I wanted to ride a camel but the others didn't seem interested. Well we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock May 30th 2017

Hi all, well we finally reached Uluru. When we started to plan this trip Uluru was to be the final destination of our trip. To date we hav found that this rock has become part of our journey and not the ultimate standout. Mind you it still sparkles. Ok now let me start you on this very interesting day. The first couple of hours was consumed by breakfast and the loading of our cars. It is harder to re load your cars against the clock than it is to just quietly load your car at home. Anyhow we had every scrap of useless piece of camping equipment loaded onto the car and off we went. Now given we had a 450 km trip you would think we would head straight out. No that wasn't going to ... read more

Hello again, today is our last full day in Alice Springs. The dilemma, what do we do? Last night we decided there were two things left On our list. One was a four wheel driving drive along a sandy creek bed and the second was to take a drive through the sites along the East MacDonnell ranges. The decision was easy. Tracey freaked out when we talked about sand so we decided on the East MacDonnell ranges. The first stop was, yes you guessed it, McDonalds for coffee, and cake of course. We headed along the Ross Highway. The first stop was Emily gap. This gap in the East MacDonnell Ranges rock wall is associated with the Eastern Arrernte Caterpillar Dreaming trail. Emily Gap, 16km out of Alice, has stylised rock paintings but there is no ... read more

Hi everyone, we are still in Alice Springs. It started with Xavier feeding the local parrots. We ended up being surrounded by bright green parrots and local collar doves. Today is Sunday and we thought it would be good to start the day by attending mass at the local Catholic Church called Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. It was interesting to see the different cultures coming together at church. Close to half the church were of Indian descent. Another large contingent of Asian background and the rest were Anglo Saxon. No Maltese and no Aboriginals. It appears there is another mass at 11 am for the aboriginal community. After mass we headed off to Todd Mall where there was a street market. Not impressed with what was on offer. We had a lunch there but ... read more

Hi all, today is our second full day in Alice. We decided it was time to go and find the famous waterholes. But before we could do that we needed the obligatory McDonalds coffee and cake. Headed off on a 90km drive to find the Ellery Creek Big Hole. It is a spectacular waterhole fed by the Ellery River. It is not running at the moment but you can see the signs of the floods meters above the current level. The river cuts through the MacDonnell Ranges and no doubt it has taken millions of years to cut out this gorge in the mountains. The Terran is rugged and unforgiving and the bird wildlife was abundant. I wanted to bring one of the local Quails home. Even though the scenery was spectacular we found a significant ... read more

Hello again, today is the first day in Alice Springs. We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning and had a lazy start. By 9.30am we had finished breakfast and headed off to our first touristy destination. We visited the Alice Springs Desert Park. This is an Australian native zoo. We arrived at about 10.30am and had time to see the dingo enclosure (mind you the dingos did not want to see us). At 11am we joined an Aboriginal presentation on survival in the desert with information on desert food, implements and fire starting with wood and kangaroo poo. At the end of this Xavier was so impressed he wanted a photo with the presenter. Not sure who had the darkest tan. We headed off to the Nocturnal enclosure, Lisa was so impressed with the snakes. ... read more
