This morning I got off a train and rode my bike to Malorie's family's house. Meeting them has been incredible—the country here is beautiful, everything is virescent except the glowing purples and whites and reds of the different flowers. All along this trip I've been struck with wonder, How did I get here? And now that I am in Plainville, MA, I don't know how I ended up here, but I am glad I did. My time on this trip it wrapping up, it seems, for the time being—I fly out of Boston on Wednesday for a family reunion and my [View Full Entry]

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure - self-determined, self-motivated, often risky - forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind - and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” - Mark Jenkins Currently Listening: M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Los [View Full Entry]

The subject to this entry has nothing to do with the entry itself, I just wanted something a little dramatic as an introduction: Currently listening: Hong Kong by The Gorillaz (for the incredible guzheng) Just listened: Leaves in the River by Sea Wolf Currently reading: Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk Just read: The Road by Cormac McCarthy I am in Columbia, Maryland, outside of Baltimore, lying prone in the front yard of Sam's uncle's house. The time is getting nearer where the trip takes some unique turns: Tim is going to Scotland for a week and a half and I am going [View Full Entry]

Listening to: Frightened Rabbit’s “The Midnight Organ Fight” & Bukka White's "Sky Songs" Just listened: Mixtape from Malorie Reading: My Ishmael by Daniel Quinn Just read: Rant by Chuck Palahniuk Feeling: Grateful for this opportunity, homesick for Boise. I’ve been lazy about updating since the initial novel diligence of opening a travel blog. Sitting in a twenty-four hour café, wide awake with very unreliable internet and no poems floating around in my head, ready to be transcribed, I am reflecting on the trip so far and think it’s only fair to put u [View Full Entry]

First of all I feel the need to apologize to the entire state of Utah for my low expectations I had coming into it. Admittedly, the first 50 miles or so coming out of Nevada didn’t look too encouraging. Barren salt flats that would make even the bravest pioneer have to question what the heck he was trying to discover on the other side. I think I would have just turned around. So after a full day’s drive we made it into Salt Lake City around 9 o’clock Wed and found a place where we could park the RV for the [View Full Entry]

We pulled into Salt Lake City June 4th, late in the evening. Just looking for a place to pass the night, we found a spot in the outskirt residential. Bryant came down and visited us and after some banter, me and Ben rode into town in search of a coffeeshop. After some searching, we found the Salt Lake Coffee Break welcoming and after ordering drinks, proceeded to spend time writing, reading, and observing. We stayed until 130am when we noticed the rainfall. Without much option, we rode back soaking, fighting liquid arrows with our eyelids. We locked the bikes up and [View Full Entry]

We were wrong about Nevada.
Nevada: We had been blessed to travel through such beautiful area on the western coast. WInding roads and potholes were small prices to pay for the view. After hitting Salinas, the romping grounds of Steinbeck, we made our way east, towards Salt Lake City. This brought us through Nevada. Starting from the evening, we drove late into the night. Ben drove through late evening and I picked up the reigns for the night/morning shift. Tim and Nate slept while we progressed the tour. The Nevada freeway was ridiculous to say the least. Flat. Straight. Strong winds. Miles upon miles upon [View Full Entry]
