It's time to leave the Canyon but we have one last stop at the Desert View Watchtower. This, too, was designed by Sweetie's new obsession - Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter. We both agree if you had limited time to see the Canyon, this would be the place to do it! Aside from the magnificent Watchtower, the view encompasses the Canyon and the Colorado River and of course, is Breathtaking! There are views all the way along this route (25 miles from Canyon to Desert View) so again, a great way to see the beauty. And we're off!!! Today, we are seeing some of Route 66 - the argument is over how much kitsch can Sweetie get Asshole to endure before he locks her out of the car. She refuses to sleep in the car on this ... read more

Not only is Sweetie still alive but out of the bed for a Sunrise Walk in the Canyon. We head to Mather Point - the far east part of the Southern Rim where we're staying. Light truly dictates the view at the Canyon. Had to head back to the room for a short while - the cold air was killing Sweetie's head. After a couple of hours, it was time to head out for breakfast. We decided to skip the cafeteria style and head to Bright Angel Lodge at the rim. We both scored big with a great meal for a change. Sweetie had a Huevos Rancheros Skillet with blue corn tortillias, refried beans, green chiles, scattered hash browns, cheese and eggs over hard. I had a country fried steak skillet with country fried steak, scattered ... read more

Today not starting out so well as Sweetie woke up with full fledged crud. Hot and cold, sweats, body aches, but she is fighting it with Dayquil and Nyquil. I doctor her the best I can, but we agree that the best thing for her today is stay in bed. With her blessing, I head out and pick up the Trail of Time where we left off yesterday. You can see the trail that leads down into the canyon from this point, with several hikers hiking down. I pick up the pace and hike up to Trailview Overlook, with several observations along the way. Next up is Maricopa Point, with a 400 ft. elevation gain since I began. The vistas from here are awesome - way beyond belief. Pictures with our little camera and cell phone ... read more

Grand Canyon Solo Trip

This morning we rose and discovered some one of nature's real beauties, the Grand Canyon. The first time we viewed this monstous crack in the earth, it was awe-inspiring. We viewed Mather Point first with many photo opportunities. It's located on the east side of the viewing rim near the Visitors Center. While there, we listened to a park ranger's discussion of wildlife in the park, at the Mather Point Amphitheater. Most of the talk was on Big Horn Sheep (not Mountain Goats as Sweetie originally thought!) and their ability to adapt to this rough terrain. We then viewed a 30 minute film on the history of the Grand Canyon, with narration by Peter Coyote. Truly amazing how this canyon has transformed over 2 billion years. We also learned about the history of eight (8) different ... read more

It's time to get the Traveling Traverse rolling again. We leave Las Vegas and head to the Grand Canyon, with a stop at the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam is one of the world's largest dams that controls floods, generates electricity and provides water. It was built during the Great Depression at a cost of $49 million and completed in 1935. The size and vastness of it just reinforces the size and vastness of our travels in this part of the country. We continue on through the desert and some real ugly landscape. After we pass through Kingman, the terrain starts to green up and look better. We make our first stop on Route 66 in the small town of Seligman. It still has artifacts of a bygone era (Route 66), but you can tell it ... read more

Today turns out to be a day of rest. We tryed to make reservations inside the Grand Canyon beginning today but they only had availability starting tomorrow the 17th. We made reservations at the Yavapai Lodge for four(4) nights beginning on the 17th. We chose to stay put at the Hampton Inn in Henderson. You always know what you're going to get at a Hampton Inn but this one had a little extra - a lady named Teresa who prepares the breakfast. Aside from being a lovely person with a wonderful smile, she makes a really nice breakfast to start your day. Henderson is a nice little surburb of Las Vegas with plenty of shopping, dining and, of course, casinos. Casinos not being our cup of tea, we decide on the movie Seven Phycopaths, for a ... read more

After a semi-restful night, Sweetie and AHole were awakened by the friendly Camp Curry Skunk. Not sure what angered him under our tent but he got us on the move before 7am!!! How Bill and Chandler slept through it is a mystery of science - ha! ha! Got up, got packed, had breakfast at Curry Village and then picked up Brantley and her friend Tess. The plan - head over the Tioga Pass to Bishop where Sweetie and AHole could take 395 through Death Valley on their way to the Grand Canyon. Boys in one car, girls in another and off we go! B knows the roads well but took it easy today. Where to begin??? The scenery is absolutely amazing. By days' end, we will have travelled as high as 9,945 feet above sea level ... read more

Sunday was truly a day of rest - sort of... laundry, football, figuring out where the restrooms were, all kinds of low key activity today. Sweetie woke up thinking of tent life 30 years ago and got a good laugh thinking about how life comes full circle... tent life again... Brantley is packing up to head out to Hawaii so we made a visit to her campsite one last time and had one more campfire with some Jiffy Pop Popcorn. A nice way to end the day. Tomorrow, we head across the Tioga Pass to Bishop, Death Valley and onward to the Grand Canyon.... read more

We started today in the Calaveras Big Trees National Forest in Arnold, CA about 15 miles from Murphys. Full of Sequoias and first discovered in the mid 1800s, this was an absolutely beautiful place. We did an easy 1.5 mile hike through the trees and took some amazing photos. We are so glad we took the time to see The Petrified Forest, Muir Woods and the Redwoods and the Sequoias. From Arnold, we headed to Oakdale to meet up with our niece Brantley. AHole got to go to yet ANOTHER grocery (we did a quick run through Sierra Hills Market in Murphys in the morning) - Grocery Outlet. I'm not sure why we needed more wine and two (2) avocados, but we've got them! We loaded up the cars and it was off to Yosemite. Our ... read more

We got on the road out of San Francisco this morning and headed to Modesto to see Sweetie's Aunt Lydia in Modesto. Aunt Lydia is 95 years old and has lived out in this area for as long as Sweetie can remember. We had a really nice visit and Aunt Lydia gave us a couple of ideas of things to do on our trip as she has travelled extensively throughout the West and the World. One of her suggestions, heading to Murphys and the Big Trees was also a suggestion from Sweetie's co-worker, Tim, so even though we were supposed to go to Merced, Sweetie derailed us to Murphys! What a cool town! Between 1850 and 1860 it moved $15 million in Gold from the area. We got a room at the Murphys Hotel right on ... read more
