Suzanne here… Getting out of Nevada took bloody ages. In hindsight it was a mistake to leave Vegas on a Sunday. Lots of weekending Americans were doing the same thing. It quite felt strange crossing into California knowing that this was going to be the last State and the last leg of our trip. Without a road map of California we were travelling blind until we stopped off in Baker to buy one, and have a quick and cheap lunch at Del Taco (mmmm). Referring to our newly purchased map it seemed that our original plan to stop off at Joshua Tree National Park was a bit foolish. We had to be in Santa Cruz in a few days and Joshua Tree wasn’t actually on our route. Lake Isabella seemed more sensible, so that’s where we ... read more

Suzanne here... We arrived in Las Vegas and easily found our hotel, the Gold Spike. Nothing fancy but clean, modern rooms, if a bit stark. As with so many Vegas hotels it was also a casino, finding people propping up the bar first thing in the morning took some getting used to... The first night was a bit of a disaster. We'd been camping in peaceful national parks, and all of a sudden we were on the Vegas Strip. Probably one of the most full-on and insane places on the planet. It all got a bit much for us, too many people and all too tacky. We couldn't even find any rock, the Rockhouse seemed our best bet but was about as rock as a mackerel. We ended up back at the hotel feeling very subdued ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona August 30th 2011

Suzanne here... We noticed an immediate change in the landscape as we drove from New Mexico to Arizona. Arizona seemed a bit greener, although there was quite a lot of evidence for forest fires in the first few miles. We totally failed to find the first two campgrounds we were looking for. The map didn't seem to match up with the landscape and they were not signposted. The first time we shrugged it off, the second time we started to get worried. We headed for the last one on our list. Time was getting on so we really needed to find somewhere to stop. Luckily Fool's Hollow Lake was well signposted. Camping was $17, more than the $10 in New Mexico. Then we saw our pitch - huge and shady and overlooking the lake. There were ... read more

David here... We drove out of Texas and into New Mexico intending to camp near to Roswell. We were determined to start camping at last, motels were crippling our budget. We arrived at a campground in the middle of the desert which had no shade and nothing to stave off the relentless heat, so we decided to move on into town. We ended up staying at the friendly and facility packed Red Barn RV park on the outskirts of Roswell. Their only tent pitch was taken so they put us on some grass at the end of an empty RV spot but only charged us the normal tent rate. It was a little cooler here and we were finally able to pitch the tent. We did decide to eat at the Rib Crib in town as ... read more

David here... We left Mexico and arrived into the Texan heat at Houston with no problems. We picked up our hire car (a Nissan Versa) and drove to the La Quinta Inn just off the highway and checked into a room that included air-con, a fridge, cable TV, a huge King size bed and a reclining chair (which Suzanne quickly baggsied). This was luxury and we immediately felt at home. After freshening up we headed out to the local Walmart and bought some camping gear in readiness for our road trip through 5 states, though it would not be until we hit New Mexico that we could start camping as the heat in Texas was just too much, at over 100 deg. during the day and it not cooling down much at night. We stopped off ... read more

David here... We got our 23:30 bus to Mexico City Poniente (West) with no problems at all. We got a snack of a ham and cheese roll on the bus as well as a drink. We managed to get some sleep on the journey despite people getting on the bus at other stops and talking as they got on even though everyone was trying to sleep. We arrived into the bus station at 08:30 and jumped straight onto the metro and to Zona Rosa where the hotel we had booked was located. As it was so early we went for a breakfast in a cafe nearby before checking into the hotel. There still was not a room available so we left our luggage and wandered round for a couple of hours, taking in the nearby bars, ... read more

North America » Mexico » Guerrero » Zihuatanejo July 28th 2011

David here... We got up early and both had showers and a quick breakfast of cereal and juice before jumping into a collectivo and making it to the bus station for our 09:00 bus to the coastal town of Zihuatanejo (pronounced see-what-a-nay-ho, yes the place mentioned in The Shawshank Redemption). The bus journey took 5 hours, so it gave us time to enjoy the films Reign of Fire, Sister Act and Jump In (a made for TV Disney film about skipping), all in Spanish of course, though we could follow what was happening. We arrived at 14:00 and immediately booked our tickets to Mexico City before leaving the bus station, crossing over the main road and jumping into a collectivo right into the centre of town. Our first choice hostel, Angelas Hotel, had a room free ... read more

North America » Mexico » Michoacán » Morelia July 25th 2011

Suzanne here... The bus friom Zacatecas to Morelia left on time, 12.30am, and we hoped to settle down for some sleep. Unfortunately the people behind us talked non-stop until gone 3am, most vexing. In the end we slept very little, maybe dozed slightly. At about 7am we pulled into a bus station and heard the driver shout ´Morelia´. David checked it again with him as we got off and he confirmed it, so we collected our backpacks and looked for the exit. Now, the thing I hate about bus stations in Mexico is that they never tell you where they are. Elsewhere you´d have a massive sign saying ´Welcome to Kuala Lumpur´ or wherever you are. In Mexico you have to guess. So even though we´d checked it was Morelia we wanted confirmation. We were slightly ... read more

North America » Mexico » Zacatecas » Zacatecas July 22nd 2011

David here... We got up especially early (06:30am) as the bus from Guadalajara to Zacatecas takes 5 hours and we wanted to get there early enough so we could get into our chosen hostel. We got to the bus stop to the bus terminal and jumped onto a bus after both of us checking with the driver that he did in fact go to the bus station. After about 40 minutes we ended up on a random street in Beunos Aires, we think...nowhere near the bus terminal. We asked the driver again and he just said in Spanish that he did not understand. We were quite angry at this as we´d both specifically asked him, so angry in fact that I think he realised he had made a big boo-boo and gave us our money back, ... read more
