Another update from us... In June we had a visit from Mum, over from NZ, and Greg, over from Geelong (near Melbourne). It was great to show them around and take them to some of our old haunts including - the land of love - Kalgoorlie - where Damien and I met! On their arrival we headed to the Leonardo DaVinci exhibition in Perth which showed replicas of many of his inventions. Watch out for this guy, he’s fairly handy with his artwork and his inventions! I knew about his artistic side, but I hadn’t really realised the extent of his mechanical ideas and how much of modern engineering principles has evolved from ideas he had sketched. What a legend! Damien and Greg (who both love anything mechanical) were in their element. We had a walk ... read more

After the Basque Country we travelled to Wales and headed to a little seaside town called Gwbert near Cardigan. We visited Gretchen, a kiwi friend, and her Welsh husband Clive and attended daughter Elin’s christening. My sister Sonja is the Godparent of Elin, so, as she is in NZ, I stood in as a Godparent along with two other Godparents, which was pretty special. When the minister passed the baby to the Godparents, I stayed put, and the other two Godparents stepped back! So even though I was the stand in I got to hold the baby during the service. Afterwards we had an old session at the local pub. Clive is in a male choir in Wales and unfortunately we’d just missed a concert of his the night before. At the pub we talked him ... read more

We travelled to the Basque Country to stay with our friends Mikel (who we had met in Edinburgh days) and his wife Leire and baby daughter Kira. Mikel had taught us to rock climb in Edinburgh and we had been to the Basque Country in earlier years to do a bit of low level rock climbing and to see the country. On the drive from Barcelona to Basque Country, we stopped in a the Pyrenees Mountains and skied for a day at Candanchu, right on the Spanish/French border, staying in a town called Jaca (Haka). We missed the left hand turn into the Candanchu township and did a u-turn in France - so we had about 1 minute in France! Mikel and Leire made us so welcome and we loved their town, Azkoitia (Ath-coy-tia), surrounded by ... read more

Well it’s been a while since we gave an update and we’ve been and seen so much so I’ll break it down into a few parts which you can peruse at your leisure (or delete!!). In December we finished our jobs on Murrin Murrin and headed off on a long awaited trip back to Ireland starting with a wee pre-Christmas trip to NZ to see the family and have a makeshift Reid Christmas. Six weeks away in total. NZ (‘Home’) was great as usual with maximum time being spent with the two little nephews - Owen and Louie. The next generation of Reid’s is in full flow at the moment with Fei and Waz due in April, Glen and Tans due in June and Sonny and Nigel due in September. It’s shaping up for a great ... read more

Just a quick update from Murrin Murrin after having been here now for around 3 months. My how time flys on by. Our typical day here consists of waking, working 12 hours, eating (maybe the odd bevvie or two on a special night!), sleeping, waking… By the 14th day it really is time for the one week off. The temperature is heating on up here and yesterday the unofficial temperature was reported to be 46oC. It has definitely been the hottest day so far. I find it bad enough when I am working outside, but poor old Dami, having escaped the ’heat of Hawke’s Bay’ (in NZ) is now having to suit up in this weather in a protective acid suit. It’s an all in one overall number, made up of a gortex type of material ... read more

In early September, Damien started a ‘Fly in Fly Out’ job at a minesite approx 1.5hrs flight NE of Perth. The site ‘Murrin Murrin’ is a Nickel and Cobalt operation owned by a Canadian firm ‘Minara’. His job is on the processing plant working as an electrician on some new construction projects. As part of the safety code at the site, he has to be clean shaven! So now, after 9 years, I have a clean shaven man!! It took some getting use to as he really does look like a different man, but now I can see the little dimples in his cheeks! Each of the guys working on site are given ‘Personal Protective Equipment’, PPE, which is carried at all times. This includes a full face mask and a H2S gas detector. The full ... read more

The latter half of August/ early September saw Damien acquiring work on a minesite on a fly in fly out roster (FIFO). I very quickly became a lady of leisure in Fremantle, familiarising myself with the shops and café strip and donating my time to charity! My flatmate Nicola is the Senior Environment Officer on Rottnest Island, 17km west of Perth. I headed out to the island for two days to plant trees in two areas 1) after being burnt out after a flare from a boat which landed on the island during Australia Day celebrations last year, and 2) replanting an area cleared for pastoral land around 60 years ago. I think I have made myself carbon neutral for this year at least! The ‘Quokka’ is a native of the island. It is a half ... read more

We headed off for a weekend in Esperance - 4 hours from Kalgoorlie, on the south coast of Western Australia. It is such a picturesque little place. So here are some shots. The Southern Right Whales had started to come into the bays around here also, although we didn't spot any this weekend. There is a shot here also of me getting my eye back in on the pool table after years away from the game. Happy to say I am acing it now! My Dad would be proud! This photo was taken in a pub in Merredin (a small town on the Great Eastern Highway on the drive to Perth). I headed there for the weekend to meet up with Nicola and Mike (kiwis! - I knew Nicola - 'Pickle' from Massey Uni days, but ... read more

Arriving back into Kalgoorlie after nine years was very exciting! We couldn’t wait to take a drive around the whole town and see what had changed. What had changed? Nothing! Well actually, that’s not true. The outskirts of town had become more populated with various businesses. There were now more clothes shops and at least 3 coffee shops making flat whites and lattes! But generally it all looked like it did when we left it. However last time we were here we had a big group of friends who were now all gone (except for Dion and AJ, a kiwi couple we made friends with from our previous work here. They have had 3 kids since we left!). So it is a weird feeling coming back because it kind of feels lonely. My brother was here ... read more

The Great Ocean Road is a gorgeous piece of coastline which I would put on a par with the West Coast of the South Island in NZ. The sort of place where you load Bic Runga or Damien Rice, onto the iPod, and listen to the music as you observe the scenery passing by while thinking and discussing deep philosophical thoughts! I am lucky, in times like this, that Damien prefers to be the driver - I can be the observer (and DJ!). One of the many beauties of Pearl (our 1995 Ford Falcon stationwagon), is that she doubles as an accommodation block. Depending on your choice of public carpark, truck stop or camping ground, you can wake up to million dollar views! We have fitted roo-shoos onto the car. They look like a type of ... read more
