After 10 months & 32771 miles my roadtrip through the America's has come to an end & its time to return to sunny London. Surprisingly, despite a few close calls along the way I'm still in one piece. Once again the big wide world has proven itself to be full of kind, generous & friendly people country after country, despite what you read in the news. Trust me, the good far outweigh the bad in this world. I do realise I've been so very, very, very, lucky & not just because I've been fortunate enough to get on the bike & go for which I owe many people a great deal, but because as ever, I've met truly exceptional people along the way. And that is what I'll miss most now I'm retiring from this life, ... read more

Apologies, I know its been weeks but I hope whilst I've been enjoying the delights of Chile & Argentina you've been keeping well. Whilst you've all been busily going about your day to day I was as usual, clocking up & counting down the miles towards the southern most tip of the America's. Prior to getting back on the road I had the small matter of a three week delay in Santiago, Chile to deal with whilst the bike recovered from the trauma of Bolivia combined with some amazingly fragile BMW engineering. I wasn't blessed with patience but luckily Santiago is a sweet city to get stuck in & the hostel we stayed at had a lot of interestingly entertaining people who kept me amused & smiling all the while. The repairs cost a mere $1700, ... read more

I'd truly had enough of Bolivia and was longing to see the Chilean border. Yes it was cheap & there was a lot to see but regardless I couldn't wait to get out. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, a mixture between just one of those feelings & being sick of riding through deep, wet mud for mile after mile after mile. Unfortunately Bolivia got word we wanted out & tried so very hard to keep us a while longer. Prior to leaving Andy, Patrick & I agreed to head south to the town where Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (one of my favourite films by the way) met their end. It didn't look that far on the map, maybe 400 miles total, but to get there & get out into ... read more

Hello, I hope 2011 has got off to a flier & you're all keeping well in your various corners of the world. I'm in Bolivia which is a little cold & can be very muddy but otherwise it's all good. In a few days time I should be back on the road south, once I've straightened out a few bits on the bike. I'll get to why it needs to be straightened later. Thanks for taking the time to read the blog & for the notes saying hello too, as ever they're much appreciated. This entry is far too long so apologies in advance. Skim read or just look at the pictures if you like, I'll never know. After a rather lack lustre effort last time & more then a few emails telling me to put ... read more

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! I'm a touch late I know but here in South America they don't actually celebrate Christmas until mid February or New Year until late March (fact) so I can be forgiven. Prior to letting you know what I've been up to I want to wish you & yours all the best for 2011 & I truly hope to say hello & share a drink with you at somepoint during the year. You'll have to buy them obviously, as after this little adventure I'll be broke, but it's the thought that counts. I've actually covered some ground since I last said hello, over 5000 miles in a month in fact, which on South American roads, goat tracks & mountain trails is easier said then done & more then a little ... read more

Welcome to South America! I trust you are keeping well & depending on which corner of the world you happen to be in, enjoying the snow or the sunshine. If like me you're in Colombia, I hope you like a whole load of rain. It is so gorgeously green & lush here possibly something to do with it raining 22 out of the 24 hours in the day but regardless, it's a contender for the most beautiful country I've ridden through since I left New York. Southern Alaska was stunning but as that's a state & not a country Colombia could sneakily snatch first place. It goes from jungle to prairies to rolling countryside & reminds me of England one moment & New Zealand the next. The start of the Andean mountain range makes for an ... read more

A huge thank you for all the Birthday wishes, I really appreciate you taking the time. If you didn't, shame on you! So yes, since the last entry I am a whole year older & therefore wiser & so feel I should impart some new found wisdom to those of you who are considering taking a motorcycle around the Americas. If I were you, I'd a bring a map. That particular pearl of wisdom only occurred to me since turning 34 whilst trying to navigate my way around Central America without one. I did manage to pack two spare batteries for a portable alarm clock I never use, but maps I thought I'd be able to buy over here. I'll admit trying to 'ride the Americas' without one is quite a large oversight on my part. ... read more

Soon to be 34 eh & hardly a possession to my name, but look at what I've achieved! Okay, so I'm a little light on achievements (in the conventional sense) too. My only real possessions may be a rucksack & a motorbike (rucksack under bed in Wembley, bike knackered by the time I get home) & yes I might be skint yet again when I do make it back & may (family & D&B replace 'may' with 'will') need somewhere to crash whilst I sort myself out, but surely I can't be the only 34 year old you know of in the same situation? I read an apt John Lennon quote recently that said 'if you enjoyed wasting time, then your time wasn't wasted'. As I accept the need to mature, you'll notice this blog becoming ... read more

Yes, I'm still here in Mexico & no I hadn't intended on staying this long. My initial estimate had me racing through building up enough of a reserve to see the sights/laze about in Central America but as it is, there's very little not to like about Mexico meaning time has been passing whilst the miles have not. Still, there's always tomorrow. I have been told after Guatemala there's not a huge amount to see before Columbia, excluding Costa Rica & so I'll make up time there. Definitely. I have just read a travel blog by two Scottish lads who made it to Panama 45 days after leaving Alaska including five countries in six days as they passed through Central America, despite the main roads being washed away by recent floods. As there are no roads ... read more

Updating the blog less then three weeks after my last entry, get in there!!! Before I get started I want to wish my dad a happy 75th birthday & say thank you for being you & so very good at what you do - being our dad. I know Bernadette & Stephen feel exactly the same. We, especially I don't say it enough & I know you don't realise how amazing you are. I couldn't have wished for better. Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry but this way he is sure to get the message. I'm currently up in the Mexican highlands enjoying a climate much more suited to a man with my Irish blood. The 40C degree heat (google has just told me that's 104F) with heavy humidity can get a little tiresome & very smelly. Last night ... read more
