So, last weekend (the 1st through the 4th) our group had an excursion to Berlin. It was great to finally ge there and see it after reading so much abour it in history books and always hearing about it. One of the best things about this excursion was, even though it was a Furman excursion, we didn't have to go to 8,000 museums and 40,000 other boring places while we were there. Frau Chew (our Furman professor here now), has an entirely different approach than Herr Whisnat (the Furman professor who was here before) did. We actually had most of our time there to ourselves, to see whatever we wanted to see. First of all, I have to mention that we got to ride in first class both ways on the train, and it was amazing. ... read more

I am going to warn all of you ahead of time, this blog is going to be a long one. This past weekend was a long weekend, and I spent it in Madrid. I had a really great time. Sallie and I flew in to Madrid Friday night, and checked into our hostel. We were trying to meet up with Furman friends who were on their study abroad program there, but had some difficulties contacting each other at first. Eventually, my friend Matt (Krantz for all of you at Furman who may know him) got a hold of us and took us to eat in a Restaurant called “Museo de Jamon,” which literally translates into “Museum of Ham.” Its basically a Spanish chain of restaurants, that serves lots of ham (ham is really popular in Madrid). ... read more

I'm going to try to keep this short, because we are in the middle of mid-terms and I have tons of work to do, but I have alot to tell. So, this past weekend we went on a 3 day excursion through German wine country. I enjoyed it alot, because it was much more laid back and relaxing, and thw weather was much better. What was not better, however, was our transportation. Our bus driver was basically insane. He drove like a nutjob, and I was constantly fearing for my life. Also, to top it all off, our bus was not exactly the fines piece of machinery either. It broke dow twice, and some of the guys (including myself) had to push it to get it to start. I guess their standards are a little more ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, since I last spoke to all of you 2 major thing happened. First of all, I spent this past weekend in Vienna. Vienna was a really beautiful city, and we had perfect weather the entire weekend. We got to see alot of great places while we were there (you can see the pictures at http://good-times.webshots.com/album/560986302hGnUGu?vhost=good-times). We saw alot of churches, parks, and such. Some of the most noteable places we visited were: Freud's former home and practice, St. Augustines- Where the Vienna boys choir is based from, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and the Hofburg Palace (formerly owned by the Hapsburgs). Just as important as what we saw is what we ate. We went to 2 really great Viennes Cafes, and I ate Sachertorte (a traditional Viennese cake) and drank Melange (traditional Viennese coffe drink). ... read more

Hello Everyone. I know it’s been while since I’ve written my last blog, but things have been rather busy here, and I don’t think it will be slowing down anytime soon. From Sunday the 23rd until Sunday the 30th of September, our group went on a tour of East Germany (The Former DDR/Soviet Occupied Zone). During those 8 days, we visited a total of 9 cities: Eisenach, Erfurt, Weimar, Leipzig, Dresden, Wittenberg, Goslar, Braunschweig, and Hildesheim. It was a very busy, and very tiring trip, but it was great to get to visit so many places. I don’t think I’m going to bore you with all the details, because we basically went to the same kind of places in every city (churches, palaces, and museums). We also went to a lot of places were Martin Luther ... read more

So, since I have last written, a few new things have happened. Not much happened last week during the week, but I had a long weekend this past weekend, and got to do a lot of really cool things. On Friday we had a tour of Beethoven’s birthplace right here in Bonn, and then went to a “Beethovenfest” concert. The music was nice, but it wasn’t his best stuff that they played, and though classical music is good, I like it much better as background music while I’m doing other things. On Saturday I slept in, and then my Host-father took me on a small tour of a few cool places here in Bonn. On Sunday, I woke up early, and went to some more cool places around Bonn with both my host parents. First we ... read more

Hello Everyone. It hasn’t been so long since I last wrote a blog, but a lot has actually happened in the meantime. I also have some pictures to share with everyone. Well, on Friday we went on a short tour of the sights around the academy in Bonn. We got a lot of in-depth history lessons, and it was actually really interesting. Some of the more interesting facts about Bonn are: It was the capitol of Germany before Berlin was, and the Gummi-Bear company Haribo is right here in Bonn. Bonn has a lot of chestnut trees, and the founder of the Haribo company really liked these chestnuts because he would use them to lure deer while he was hunting. Every fall the children would collect chestnuts for him, and he would give them gummi bears ... read more

Hello Everyone! I'm pretty sure most of you know by now, but some of you might not, that I am spending my fall trimester in Bonn, Germany. Bonn is a comparitively small Germany city not far from Cologne. I am staying in a small village, within the city limits, called Ueckesdorf. It's about a 20 minute bus ride from the center of Bonn. The family I am staying with is very nice. The father is a doctor and psychitrist, and the mother is a nurse in a psychiatric clinic, so I am learning about psychology here even though I don't have any psych classes. My guestmother is very good about correcting my German too, so I am learning plenty of German. The house I am staying in is fairly large for only 3 people, and I ... read more
