When I crossed into East Berlin in 1988 I went through the Friedrichstraße train station, so going to Checkpoint Charlie was something on my bucket list. I went into the museum when I was there. The picture of a very young soviet soldier actually shocked me – I thought he looked about 15 years old!... read more

I walked along the Tauentzienstraße and Kurfürstendamm and into shops, including the famous KaDeWe (pronounced Ca De Ve), which was the main shopping centre in West Berlin. I found some cool boots (that I didn’t buy as I couldn’t ever see me wearing them at home), and the Gedächtniskirche. The Kurfürstendamm (colloquially Ku’damm) is one of the most famous avenues in Berlin. This very broad, long boulevard is sometimes considered the Champs-Élysées of Berlin, lined as it is with shops, houses, hotels and restaurants. The Kurfürstendamm was the main shopping street in West Berlin when the city was divided. The Gedächtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church) is located in Berlin on the Kurfürstendamm in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz. The original church on the site w... read more

Leaving Alexanderplatz, we went past the Berlin Dom (Cathedral), that was under restoration. Unfortunately it was pouring at the time, I didn’t have the time to go back later, but my memory says that it was pretty spectacular in 1988 the last time I was in Berlin. The next stop was the Brandenburg Gate. Last time I was here, I was standing in West Berlin, looking at a wall in front of the gate. It was so good to see the wall gone, and to be able to walk easily from the Western to the Eastern sides. Whilst I was there, I also wandered for a short period through the Tiergarten park across the road from the gate, and looked over to the Reichstag Building (Parliament).... read more

I woke in the morning after a pretty good sleep (just myself and one other in my couchette on the train from Paris), to snow on the ground outside! To someone who lives in Sydney, Australia, snow is a big deal – it NEVER snows here! It was also great so see that Germany likes green energy too. (Please forgive my photos – they were taken on my old iPhone 4S through a very dirty train window!) When I arrived at Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main train station), I transferred to Alexanderplatz on the S Bahn, and then dumped my suitcase at my hotel. I was staying in the former East Berlin, which I had originally visited in 1988 when the city was still divided. I then practiced my German on a real German person by getting myself ... read more

This afternoon and evening was a big long train trip. I got my first train from Bruges to Brussels, and then my second train to Paris Gare de l’Est. I wandered around the station until it was time to board my third train. I took this photo during my wanders around the station – it was on it’s way to Strasbourg. And my third train was an overnight train to Berlin. Somewhere along the line it broke in two and the other half went to Munich. I had the top bunk on the left hand side, and shared my cabin with a Polish guy that was on his way home from Spain. It was my first change to speak German again as he said his German was much better than his English!... read more

I love window shopping in foreign cities, just to see what’s different between my local shops at home, and the shops where I’m visiting. These beanies (Australian for wooly hats) looked very warm, but very kitchy touristy, and I doubt I would ever see the need to wear one at home in Sydney. I have never seen cranberries in a bag fresh before! (I’ve only seen them dried, as a juice, or as a jelly for meats (like turkey) – I don’t think anyone here grows them…) And our oranges come with the stems removed. I just loved the colours of the wool and the fabrics in this shop, so I bought some fabric for my quilting. I didn’t buy any wool, but I wish I had.... read more

I spent the morning wandering some more around Brugge. It was quite wet, so I took a hot-on-hop-off bus, but basically just stayed on the bus for most of the morning. As the weather cleared in the afternoon, I did some window shopping. Late in the afternoon, I made my way back to Paris on local and Thalys trains, then took the City Night Line train to Berlin. The posts will be: Wandering Brugge Brugge Shopping Trains to France and Germany The average temperature in Bruges was 6C / 42F with some rain, and I did 13,077 steps on my fitbit. ... read more

Getting up this morning it was quite cold and damp. I did some wandering until the rain set in.
