It was not a hard decision to leave Fairbanks, Alaska - while it was experiencing yet another cold snap (-45F on Tuesday morning) and to head south - really south! So the wisdom of EIC's and my decision that going somewhere warm in January after the holiday seemed just short of devine intervention! We left Fairbanks at 10am, and flew to Anchorage (going from -45F to -5F). From Anchorage we flew into Seattle, only to learn that a major snow storm was right on our tails! We were VERY anxious to "get out of there" before flights started getting cancelled. Our flight left Seattle at 10:40pm, and the snow hit sometime around midnight! Whew! When we arrived in Miami the temperature was 68F. Miami airport felt like a foreign country - English is definately not the ... read more

Our Biking Belgium 2011 is drawing to an end - Wednesday we got up and finished packing, it was raining and we had no bikes so hey, time to head to Amsterdam. We made sure our bags had the ability to shrink to 22.7 kg (50#) when we got to the airport. We had upgraded our train tickets from Antwerp to Amsterdam Central to first class with the hopes of fewer people, more room for luggage, and less shlepping! We got all our luggage down to the entry of the flat (down two skinny flights of stairs - yes we had a "1st floor flat"), Jean waited in the entry, while I ran the key and rent down to the corner grocery store owner. We never did meet Bob our landlord. Mission accomplished, we waited inside ... read more

Today was another hot day - was 91F, humid and cloudy - the weather report called for 70% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. I felt like I got no sleep at all due to the hot weather - and was feeling pretty puny - so we hung around the apartment trying to get past the hottest part of the day. We needed to return the bikes today - so we finally headed out around the city - taking the scenic route! We had lunch in the park - Jean wanted to stop there yesterday, but I thought we hadn't biked far enough yet - so no stopping yet. We had a great lunch and felt like true locals - they got us an English menu, but it left off all the great Flemish food, so ... read more

With 0% chance of rain, clear blue skies and high 80's for temperatures, it just had to be a biking day in Antwerp! We headed out along the ring road on a wonderful bike route through parks and under and over the highways. The sound of all the traffic could be heard but we were far above the highway in a park like setting shaded with wonderful greenery. The smell of honeysuckle is strong in the air, the flowers and flowering bushes are in full bloom and everything is such a deep green! We rode through the neighborhood of Hoboken, the local children's story says that the name "Hoboken" is derived from a little boy who accidentally dropped his sandwich in the Schelde river, which flows near Hoboken. In the local dialect of Dutch, a "boken" ... read more

The weather man called for cloudy and 0% precipitation! A biking day indeed! We chose a biking route that would take us out of town and along what looked like canals, some of our favorite riding! We headed to Deurne, a town of 70,000 that dates back to 1185, from there we biked to Wijnegem, one of the most expensive municipality of the Flanders with a small population of only 8,800. Wijnegem has the biggest Shopping Mall in the Benelux, oh dear, we were with the chickens and the roosters and missed it, oh me oh my! This is where we picked up the Albert Canal, a very very wide canal! The riding along the canal was wonderful, no big wind, and although it was cloudy there was no rain! It was a very busy day ... read more

The weather report AGAIN called for 70% rain, and our shoes were still wet - so we decided to explore the town of Antwerp on foot! It is a great city with a population of about 475,000. The train station is absolutely beautiful - full of history and ancient architecture! We started out our trek looking for the two fabric/quilting stores that I found through some searching. Lana's was first that we came upon on Anselmostraat 92 - a quaint yarn and fabric store. Most of their fabrics appeared to be by American manufacturer's but I did find a few pieces of fabric of a more European color scheme. The shop owner asked where we were from, and seemed quite honored that someone from the US would buy fabric in Belgium - she said - It ... read more

The first thing we did was to check the weather report - 70% chance of rain in Antwerp, so then I checked Brugge (where we spend 3 weeks, 2 years ago), there was a mere 30% chance of rain in Brugge. It was raining already in Antwerp, our shoes had not dried out yet and we were dubious to spend another day wet. SO - off to the train station (by foot) we headed. When I went to use my camera on the way to the train station - I found that it was water logged from yesterday! DRAT DRAT DRAT. We jumped on a train to Brugge as I was oh so sad to not be able to take pictures. When we arrived in Brugge we felt like such veterans as we jumped on the ... read more

Our first full biking day - we were pretty excited, but didn't get all our stuff together and ready to head out the door until 10:30am! Is so great to sleep in and not be on a schedule! We picked Lier to bike to - both for the distance (about 15 miles) and for the town's description. Our guide book Lier as a pretty little town, south-east of Antwerp that has a handsome collection of historic buildings and a 14th century watch tower. We found our way on our routed bike routes (04-08-10-80-81-61-63-11 to 89). We were delighted to find that the "hole in the wall" that leads us under the railroad drops us quickly out to bike route 04 and we were off! The first town we biked through was Mortsel - about 25,000 people ... read more

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 First, Happy Birthday to our youngest daughter! Have a wonderful day celebrating! While I was up and about early, Jean was sure that she should sleep until noon - or at least sleep until she was sure she could sleep no more. By 8am I think I "guilt-ed" her into thinking she should be up - as I was up, bed made, breakfast eaten, showered and dressed! We began our day heading back to the bike shop we had found, only to be told that no, they did not rent bikes. The young man sent us to the Central train station. Here we found bikes for rent (red bikes) that are checked in and out of parking stations through out town, set up like a borrowing short commuter stations. They are set ... read more

I left first, leaving at 6am and flying from Fairbanks to Minneapolis to Amsterdam. I got a whole row to myself from Fairbanks to Minneapolis, much appreciated! My connection time in MSP was cut short and I had 28 minutes to get from Gate B to Gate G, but they didn't give my seat away, and the flight clicked right along. It felt very familiar landing in Amsterdam and was good to see my luggage, and no stops from Customs is always a good thing. Sister Jean was not as fortunate, her plane was not air worthy, and her flight was delayed leaving Philadelphia by 3-1/2 hours. She was already landing in Amsterdam 2 hours after my flight, so now I have a 5-1/2 hour wait in the Amsterdam airport. Oh well, they have wireless and ... read more
