Hey everyone, Sorry long time no write! We got a long weekend this month and went to the beach city called Busan for three days. It's not that warm right now but it's about 10-20*C so its pretty nice. Busan is the second biggest city in Korea so its got lots of yummy food and things to see. Our first day we explored a down town area called Nampo-dong. Nothing much to say, lots of brand name stores on a pretty little walkway. The second day we spent an hour on the subway to get to the beach area. It was a really nice day except for the fog! Really, if you've seen the movie The Mist, it was exactly like that. You really could only see a few meters infront of you. Our last day ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Insadong April 30th 2011

So this weekend was beautiful and we went to Seoul for one night and went to see the big Gyeongbokgung Palace. We took and English tour when we got there and the woman giving the tour marched us around like we were racing some other group. But the other group was just in her head. Anyways, it was really beautiful because all the cherry blossoms were out, they only bloom for 2 weeks of the year, so it was pretty special. I found it interesting that this palace and the Imperial Palace in China look so similar, but then she tried to explain to me they were both build using the same book (she seemed to assume that I would know which book but I don't, and I didn't want her to think I was stupid ... read more

So, we went to Japan on December 28th and stayed till January 1st. It was great. Lots of food, lots of drink, lots of walking. Our hotel was right in the downtown area called Namba, so most days we would crawl out of bed and just walk around for hours. Our friends Gary, Amanda, and Patrick also came a day later. Great times! Okay check out the pictures.... read more

Heaven, Summer, Scorpions... The Temple of Heaven After a nice breakfast and a coffee we set off for the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven is where the Emperor would go to worship Heaven and perform ceremonies, specifically ceremonies related to the harvest. The buildings were really beautiful as you will see in the pictures. At one of the farther buildings there was a door built for a very old Emperor. He was 70 years old and walking around the grounds was very tiring for him so he got people to make a door for him to one of the temples that shortened the distance between one of the entrances and the temple. The door is appropriately called the 70 year old door. This was because he didn’t want his sons to become lazy and ... read more

Flight, Palace, Duck... Tuesday So we set out for Beijing at 7:30am in the morning and arrived at the airport very early for our flight. Our friend Carey was traveling with us but she was on a different airline. As we were waiting to get our tickets and check our bags she sent us a text saying that two more of our friends were on the same flight as her. When we got to the counter we asked if we could please have an aisle for Scott and the man at the desk said, “You know you are in business class right?” HAHA! I had just booked the cheapest flights I could find and it turns out our trip to Beijing was in business class and I didn’t even know it! So after getting our ... read more

Seongsan Ilchulbong Friday Friday was our last day on Jeju Island. We planned on mainly visiting the Sunrise Peak, kind of like a mini volcano, which you can see above. Our flight wasn’t until the evening so we weren’t too pressed for time. We also checked out the Mysterious Road, and a museum, but they didn’t compare to the mountain. In the morning we got up and checked out of the hotel. We were staying on the northwest side of the island and the mountain was on the northeast side so we had about an hour drive until we got there. On the way we passed by a sign that said “Mysterious Road.” We had read about it in a couple of guides about the island and were intrigued, so we decided to make a quick ... read more

Tea fields, waterfalls, and crowded beaches... Thursday Thursday morning we woke up, had some instant coffee (because that is all that Koreans drink) and were on our way. Today we went to the O’Sulloc green tea fields. We spent some time reading about the historical importance of tea in Korea and China and then tasted the most expensive green tea I have ever seen. On a side note one of the green tea brewers said that green tea was first grown in Korea and then moved to China. I don’t know whether he was trying to sell us tea or being truthful. Anyways... So... Yeah, $25 for 10 satchels of tea? We also got to see some professional tea brewers at work, it’s quite the art. There was also a little tea museum in the ... read more

Jeju Island Wednesday Alright... so it’s about time I wrote about our trip to Jeju Island, and our summer vacation. Our vacation was from Wednesday July 28th to Tuesday August 4th, a total of seven days. Our main destination was Jeju, which took up three of the days. The remaining four days were filled with lazing around our apartment playing video games because it was too damned hot to do anything else. That week’s temperatures were around the mid-to-late thirties... fml. But that didn’t include the humidity which made it feel probably somewhere in the fourties. Our plane to Jeju-do left Cheongju at 7:30am so guess who woke up at 5:00am??? We got the airport, and got on the plane and had the most violent turbulence ridden plane ride ever! I was almost sick, Scott ... read more

(Panoramic of a big courtyard; on the left is the gate to the throne room building, Injeongjeong) Changdeokgung Changdeok Palace complex was lots of fun. There are two royal palace complexes within a fifteen minute walk from Insadong. We chose to go to Changdeokgung because it also has a garden inside it, known as the Secret Garden (Biwon). However it was so large that we only had the energy to check out the main buildings. It cost ₩3000 each to enter the palace. First I’ll give you a little history lesson on the complex. Conveniently this was written on the back or our tickets: (Words in italics are directly quoted, the rest I’ve added.) The palace was constructed in 1405, the fifth year of King Taejong (r. 1400-1418). Taejon was the third king of the Joseon ... read more
