(above you'll see a panorama of Changdeok Palace, which ill talk about later) Seoul - Insadong So this past weekend we headed north on our first visit to Seoul... which is for those of you unfamiliar with South Korea, its capital. The city is massive, so we decided to pick just one area of the city to first. We chose Insadong and its surrounding, which we’ll talk about in a bit. Anyways, we jumped on the bus at 9 am Saturday morning from Cheongju. The ride took roughly 1½ hours from bus terminal to bus terminal. Much better than our pervious bus ride of 3 hours from the airport... We arrived at the Intercity Bus terminal in Seoul a little disoriented, but excited non-the-less. Wonderland School So our school is called Wonderland. But, it’s not actually a school; it’s a Hagwan, better known in Canada as an academy. If anyone has heard of the Sylvan math program then you will understand the concept. A Hagwan is an after elementary school “school”. So children go to school until about 1pm, and then they go to these Hagwans. Ours is an English Hagwan but there are many others too. They range from math, sciences, art and social sciences, to Tae Kwon Do and other sports. Essentially these after-school schools are for rich kids to get a better education in specific topics. Education is very competitive here, and if the parents aren’t satisfied with their child’s learning they will simply switch hagwans. We’re having fun though, our fellow teachers are all very nice ... read more

Noraebanging I know I said that I would write about our Noraebang excursion a while ago, but I’ve been... well... lazy. It’s getting hot here too, but it’s not just the heat that’s annoying it’s the super high humidity. Most days the temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius but the humidity makes it feel between 36 and 38. Very very hot! The rainy season is supposed to go from July through August, so I think we’re in for a rough couple of months. It’s already started raining and you might think that the rain would relieve some of the humidity and maybe cool it down a bit, but you would be wrong, it was the opposite. We’ve started needing to use the air conditioning at night just so we don’t sweat to death in our sleep. ... read more

Sangdangsanseong I know it’s been a while since our last post. We’ve spent the last few weeks settling into our school and getting over our various illnesses. Rachel and I both got the flu... On top of that Rachel also got some kind of bronchitis for an extra week and a half. Awesome! Naturally we didn’t do much with our free time except relax and recover, which I am happy to report, we have! This weekend we had ourselves some fun. On Friday night we went out with four of our fellow teachers to a Noraebang—aka a karaoke bar. On Saturday we sat around all day and recovered from our previous night’s exploits. On Sunday we went to Sangdangsanseong the mountain fortress just east of Cheongju. This entry will be about our fortress trip because it’s ... read more

Our first Weekend! Friday So after our first full day of teaching on our own one of our coworkers took us out for a night to relax. After a $4 taxi ride we were part way across the city at a Korean barbeque, which is very popular, where we had samgyeopsal, similar to thick-cut bacon, but it’s actually pork belly. The traditional way to eat it is to barbeque it in small pieces, then place it on a lettuce leaf with some weird tasting soy bean and hot pepper paste and maybe a slice of radish. Then you wrap it all up and pop it in your mouth. I (Rachel) loved this! Scott just ate the meat off the grill and dipped it in sesame oil mixed with salt and sometimes pepper, which is also delicious. ... read more

What can you say about a thirteen-and-a-half hour flight? It was long, really, really long. Comfy but long. Our attempts to sleep failed. As we found out, sleeping upright is difficult and somewhat uncomfortable. In total I got around 2 hours and Rachel got a little more. It wasn't all bad though. We had televisions embedded in the seat in front of ours with many movies (lots of new ones), music and TV shows. The service on Korea Air was great. The stewardesses were very helpful. All in all though there isn't much to write about... we flew... from Canada to South Korea, that's it. Oh, it was raining when we arrived... The real fun began when we got to Incheon International. We arrived at 3:00 am local time, a little later than expected because ... read more

Preliminary Trip Info So... this is just to update those that don't know yet, or for those that care. Rachel and I will be teaching overseas in Korea for approximately one year. This will hopefully be followed up with some traveling. I'm mainly writing this entry to play around with the blog and different text settings. We will be living and teaching in Cheongju, the provincial capital of Chungcheongbuk-do, in the Republic of Korea. As of now we don't know exactly where we will be living, and I don't know whether I'll post that anyways since at the moment this is in the public forum. I will post our school address though. Where we are teaching: Wonderland School 2F 1754 Gakyung-dong Heungduk-gu Cheongju, 361-803 Chungcheongbuk-do Republic... read more
