So, we left Chiang Rai this morning. We stopped at a roadside stall on the way out of town for something to eat. We got a couple of black buns with gold stripes for the road because they looked interesting. Shortly after that we arrived at the white temple, Wat Rong Khun. This is a strange place. On the one hand, it's a Buddhist temple with lots of statues of buddha & such. On the other hand it felt to me like plastic. Disneyland. Something fake made for tourists. At least that's the feel I got, but it turns out that the temple itself was closed for renovations and we could only walk around the grounds. I'll give you an idea of the 'fake' feeling I got: the entrance to the temple itself is over a ... read more

Our plan for today is not too strenuous, for a change. We started the day with a visit to a local temple, Wat Si Khom Kham, on the lake shore. There are actually two temples side by side here, in the same complex, each with large golden Buddhas in beautifully decorated buildings. One of the temples is built on stilts in a small artificial bay. All very nice, but the interesting thing about the place isn't the temples themselves but the gardens in the complex. One of them in particular. In one small area of the temple grounds are a collection of sculptures that depict a very graphic and gruesome version of Hell, complete with demons, tortured people being beheaded or boiled in a pot, creatures attacking people who are trying to escape by climbing thorny ... read more

Waking up to the view we woke up to is a treat! And we had breakfast at the hotel today too. Not a very good breakfast, true, but it included coffee and tea, mandarin juice, and fried egg and toast, so better than nothing. Besides, we ate on the main balcony overlooking the view! And once we left the B&B our first stop of the day was a complete hour long Thai massage in Nan. Just what the doctor ordered! We got rubbed and pounded, twisted and kneaded and totally relaxed. Oh, that felt good! A short drive from there took us to Wat Phrathat Khao Noi, located on the top of a small hill just west of Nan and overlooking the town. Besides the golden Buddha looking over the town, there are several trees where ... read more

The best way to start the day is with a foot massage. I can't recommend it more! Right across the alley from our hotel is a small massage parlor, run by a very sweet woman. I have to note here that so far we find the Thai people to be very friendly, open and helpful. Especially with the aid of Google Translate! Anyway, back to our foot massage. It started with a foot scrub with fresh limes, included a complete workout of our feet and legs, and an extra good rub of our back, shoulders and arms. Feels great! So, back to the car and on with the journey. Next stop - a fabric-weaving village on the way to Nan. We found two shops that sell local embroidered clothing, not cheap, and nothing really interesting. But ... read more

First thing this morning was to find a bank and exchange money, at a reasonable rate. We set out to the banks (there are three nearby) only to find them all closed! Turns out that banks are closed here on Sundays! Now we're in a bind - lots of money but none we can use! We asked at the hotel, and the clerk checked and found that banks open in the airport mall at 11:00. Ok, relief! Our rental car arrives here at 10:00. Precisely on time our car arrived with the rental rep, a sweet girl named Peng. She let us pay in dollars too. So off we went to the mall. Let me tell you, learning to drive on the wrong side of the road is a challenge! Good thing I have Gilat next ... read more

We woke up to the doorbell, breakfast is served! Fried egg, toast, margarine, bacon and sausage. Shortly afterwards we got the all clear from our PCR test. We're free! Except it's Saturday. Banks are closed, so we got some cash from an ATM (at an exorbitant charge) and headed towards the famous Kaosan Road. On the way we saw the city waking up, food stalls opening, lots of flower sellers making and selling offerings for people to take to the temples. Kaosan road was empty, everything was closed. Nobody there. COVID? Too early in the morning? Probably a combination. Anyway, a bit underwhelming. We went on to the Democracy Square, with all its symbolism and read a bit about the slight irony of the name (Thai democracy was founded and is preserved by the occasional military ... read more

We're finally off to another trip! After two years stuck because of COVID... This time it's just Gilat and I, off to Siam! Getting here is NOT straightforward! We needed proof of vaccinations, PCR tests, special quarantine hotel ordered and more tests paid for. The check-in staff at Ben Gurion airport was unprepared, didn't know what forms they had to check so the process was a bit nightmarish. Still, we flew Gulf Air via Bahrain, a comfortable flight. There was actually space between my knees and the seat in front of mine! At Bahrain airport we went through another quick security check, then waited almost 4 hours for our next flight. Don't buy anything at the Bahrain airport if you're not a millionaire! Bahrain to Bangkok was smooth and uneventful. And Bangkok airport is efficient! They ... read more

Los Angeles! City of the stars! We had a very basic continental breakfast at the hotel. Basic, but it included coffee so we’re good. First stop, Avenue of the Stars. We parked in the mall parking nearby and found the avenue. Obviously this was the wrong place. A wide avenue, very upscale office buildings, lots of Lexus and Teslas driving around, but not a hint of a star. Well, we did see a Lotus, which is a star among cars. I called Noah for directions and what we needed was Hollywood Boulevard. Oops… never mind, we had a nice walk, got ourselves woken up and even did a little shopping in the mall (well, Tamar did). Then we went to Hollywood Boulevard and found somewhere to park (expensive). We enjoyed walking up the boulevard, looking for ... read more

So, today we’re off to Los Angeles! We won’t go directly there. First we’ll drive to Morro Rock (yes, all the jokes apply) on the coast, and then down the coast to the big city. The drive to Morro took us a couple hours, as usual. Morro Bay is a small town of mostly fishermen and vintners, and the rock itself dominates the coastline. It’s a huge rock jutting out to sea, forming a natural bay on its south side where the fishing boats dock. There’s a road leading out to the rock and you can walk part way around it, but the rock itself is protected and you can’t climb it. We enjoyed walking around the rock, greeting the squirrels that ran around the rocks along the shore. Some were inquisitive enough to approach us, ... read more

So, today we’re off to see some forest for a change. We left the hotel in Bakersfield and went on our way to Sequoia National Park. It took a couple of hours, but then we’re used to two-hour drives first thing in the morning by now. Our first stop was as we were driving up into the foothills up to the national park. We stopped for a rest and a snack at Slick Rock Recreation Area. There’s plenty of parking and a short walk down to the river’s edge. We explored the rocks and boulders in the river, enjoying the quiet, cool air and the spectacular view. Seeing green all around is a welcome change. Tamar took off her shoes and waded into the river to explore a little more. She says the water is wonderful! ... read more
