An early start to the day to open presents before going out. Tom then decided to announce he had lost his wallet so half an hour of searching later and resigning ourselves to the wallet being gone forever we left for the day, having missed breakfast as we had no time left. Only in the lift does Tom realise his wallet was in his pocket all along!!!!!!! Anyway it turns out to be lucky that breakfast was missed, as we started the day with a cookery lesson. First of all at a food market where we learnt about ingredients for Thai cooking and saw the locals shopping which was fascinating. We then moved on to the lesson, which in itself was great, but was also interesting as it was in a residential block so we got ... read more

We started off the day with a boat trip up to the forensic medical museum. It was graduation day which was really interesting as there were amazing flowers and kitsch toys everywhere in honour of the graduates. The museum itself was unusual to say the least. It consisted of preserved bodies of murderers, rapists and dead children, along with clothing from murder victims and various bodily parts. An odd combo! It was a bit gruesome at times. The saddest bit was the head of an unidentified man who had been decapitated during a car crash, we had visions of his family one day visiting the museum and accidently finding him there staring at them! After museum we had a wander around a local market and then got another boat to a Northern suburb where the notorious ... read more

Hi All, So we have officially experienced our first day in Bangkok. After almost 24 hours of travel Sarah felt guilty about the prospect of waking Tom so let him sleep for most of the afternoon. We went out for a wander at tea time and ended up eating a Subway of all things, not exactly Thai but we were in need of aircon, fluids and some form of quick food! Sarah did opt for chilli sauce to try and make the tuna sub more thai inspired! We returned to bed as Tom was still suffering from Jet lag, and awoke late at night unsure if it was still Wednesday or if we’d slept until Thursday!!! In the end we went out and found a cool bar where we indulged in our first pints of Singha ... read more

So we have arrived safe and sound in Bangkok. We successfully navigated the public transport to get us to our hotel without any hitches, so feeling pleased with ourselves. Although there seemed to be a million steps at every train station we had to change at – not the easiest thing with our bags! We also managed to check in early which is great. So I (Sarah) have showered, hand washed my dirty clothes and unpacked what I will need for Bangkok. Tom is crashed out fast asleep on the bed! I am itching to go out and explore, so I’m giving him another half an hour and I will be ‘accidently’ waking him up! Anyway this is just a short message to let family know we have arrived ok. Will hopefully report back later with ... read more

Just a quickie. We are currently having cold drinks in the airport to stop ourselves from melting in the heat - it appears that Hanoi is not a fan of aircon. Tom has just done an impression for me of Adrian Cronauer “Its hot, hot, hot, hot, hot”. Just seen the strangest thing in the form of a bed shop in the airport with the employees asleep in the beds! Anyway it prompted me to need to share this info and we can’t get on facebook for some reason so hence this little blog! Our flight was ok, although shattered now. We were sat next to strange but nice guy, who was totally plastered! Turns out he’s off jacked in his job and is off travelling now his children are in their 20’s. At one point ... read more

Ok here is our first proper (and hopefully not last!) blog. We’re at the airport waiting to leave. We seem to be taking more stuff than most people take for a year, but it’s still the lightest bag Sarah ever took on holiday! We ended up having a really late night as were nowhere packed on time, as Tom had to go back to work as he forgot something. Tom was then super excited and was still awake at 3.20am, not good when you’re up for 5am!!! We’re all ready for long flight, although beginning to wonder if it was worth saving the £100 to change at Vietnam!! Still it will be an adventure! This is just a short entry as I’m sure you don’t all want to know the ins and outs of our train ... read more
