Today was my first foray into the rain forest. The objective was to check out some of the Ranger stations & evaluate there needs in terms of where volunteers could help. It was also a good excuse to go trekking. I just wish I had a camera with a telephoto lense!... read more

After 16 hours of travelling, yesterday I arrived at Kaeng Krachan National Park, and was shown to my desk at the WWF office at the Park Headquarters. My training at Openmind came in handy as this morning I had to introduce myself in Thai, to the park staff, at their early morning meeting. This weekend, I will be taken around the park to see some of the tourist attractions, & meet some of the staff. I have also been given a class of Thai University students, who are completeing their "inturnship" here at the park. I have been asked to give them English lessons, but this will be challenging as teaching more advanced English has not been part of my experience so far, & I have no one to help me. Last night I had dinner ... read more

Well...... I'm finally leaving Nong Khai to head out on my next & most important assignment. I arrived back at Openmind HQ in Nong Khai last night & will be here for the next week to sort out all the admin for the Laos placement. This morning I had to get up at 5.30 to go to Phu Wua, to look at their set up & draw comparisons. This will help me prepare for my task in the rainforest of Southern Thailand on the Burmese border.... read more

Hi everyone Sorry that I have been unable to update my blog, but I have had no internet or telephone access. Anyway, I am safe & well and have taken the weekend off to go rock climbing in Vang Vieng. The rock climbig has been awesome, it gives the same adrenaline buzz as hanging off a motorbike at 120mph when you climb up a rockface clinging in only by your fingertips. I will post photo's later, but will be back to Ba Na villiage on Monday for 1 week so will not be contactable again. Cheers Shaun... read more

I am truly lost for words. I should have written things down on a daily basis but have been to busy & unable to get to an internet connection. After arriving in Laos, the first port of call was Ba Na to the wild elephant viewing tower, were we all spent the night waiting........ but no Elephants, but a good 2 hour trek back to the villiage the next day. Then we left to go to our village. Ban Hatkhai is a village of about 50 families, mainly subsistence farmers, about 3 hours from Vientiene, and 15km from the main road. It is situated within the boundary of the Pho Kaou Khuay wildlife sanctuary. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, & fabulous trekking. They have had Guides here for 4 years, but only 1 can speak a little ... read more

Well..... this is what I came over for! I am now off to my posting in Phou Khao Khouy, Ba Na Villiage, Central Laos. Just a few thoughts, but before that, there are no telephones or internet in the villiage, although my mobile should work. I will only be able to get onto the internet or phone out when I go into the main town (about 1 1/2 hours away, which I guess will be once every one to 2 weeks. Therefore if anyone needs to get hold of me you can call me on: +66 856 536 726 Please note that I am not sure if you will need to use a different country code for Laos. If so, just replace the +66 with the relevant code. I'll be sorry to leave all of my ... read more
