Since I started my training at the Open Minded house, I have not had time to paste anything on my blog, however, better late than never! Wow! What a great experience it has been. Cultural training, Thai language lessons, Learning about the organisation, it's sucesses & objectives, practical lessons involving purchasing ingredients from the market (in Thai) to role play in the classroom. I have also learned more about my first placement. Phou Khouay, Ba Na Villiage (Central Laos, 90 minutes from Vientiane). The focus here will be to teach English to villiage guides & home stay providers, [View Full Entry]

First Day in Nong Khai

Tuk Tuks
Even the Tuk Tuks are much more basic.
I woke up this morning firstly to the sounds of cocks crowing, during the early hours of daylight, & then the sound of the school children singing what I assume was a patriotic song with drumming. First impressions are that this city is much poorer than the other areas that I have visited (which is what I expected). But also more regimented - almost military with soldiers in uniform much more prevalent than anywhere else. I took breakfast this morning at a restaurant/guest house at the end of the road, which seems to be more of a hippy colony for westerners. [View Full Entry]

Arrival in Nong Khai

Asia » Thailand » Northeast » Nong Khai
Well this is it. Arrived safe & sound & ready for action! Initial discussions with Sven Mauleon look likely that I will be posted over the border in Laos. I took my first Malaria tablets this morning, so I guess its starting to feel a bit more real now. [View Full Entry]

Last night in Chaing Mai

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
Well, I've had my last night in Chaing Mai & I guess I'm kind of sad to leave having made some friends & started to get to know the area. I am sure that there is a lot more to see, & I never did get to the Golden Triangle. Maybe next time. So for this post, Ive tried to include a few of the highlights from the area, as well as some of the friends that I've made. My appologies to anyone that I've missed. And a special mention for Sam Boonmee & his family for making me so welcome [View Full Entry]

A weekend in Lampang

 Asia » Thailand » North » Lampang
I spent the weekend in the sleepy City of Lampang. Almost untouched by tourism, a much more laid back atmosphere. As I had left my computor back in my room in Chaing Mai I was unable to update my blog, but better late than never. [View Full Entry]

Just like home!

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
Well......... the weather at the moment is just like home, i.e. pouring with rain, & has been since yesterday. So nothing much to report apart from the fact that I am missing Sharon & the kids & everyone really, so I guess feeling a bit homesick. It seems that I am ok when i am busy & have something to keep my mind off things. Yesterday, I went to the day market & took a few pictures of the local scenery + a couple of custom bikes for Jake. Today, I met another American called Mike Neun, an ex comedian & [View Full Entry]

Drinking that beer promised to me by Steve Doran. Cheers mate!
Today I went up into the mountains & into the jungle along a villiage trail. There was not much sign of settlement apart from the odd shack here & there. I must admit it was a little scary as all I could hear was the insects & wildlife (and the insects were biting everytime I stopped!). As I rode along, the dry leaves were scattered around behind me making rusling noises that sounded like I was being followed. I hope I have captured the essence of this place. Once back on tarmac, the ride back down hill was exhilerating - I [View Full Entry]

There seems to be a Bhudist temple on the corner of every street.
The Sunday market in Chang Mai is incredible, & takes up most of the city centres 1.5 sq Km. Artisans from all over the area come to ply their wares, anything from silks to highly elabourate wooden carvings. The streets throng with people & the temples are taken over by stalls serving food.
