Travel curse arrives again. Our train journey to Hanoi was a write off. We arrive at the station in plenty of time, and when it comes to boarding we are told we are missing an important piece of our ticket and are given a cursory wave of the finger by the conductor as to where we should go to get it sorted. Walking around looking a bit lost and a guy comes over to me, taps me on the shoulder and points to another guy carrying a folder of sorts. He grabs my ticket, gives me another one, this time with the important missing piece, and tells me to hurry as the train is leaving (still 20 minutes before departure). Grab our bags, find our new carriage and find that our new ticket is one class ... read more

Well we are back on the road again after what seems like a long time of work - 3 months to be closer to the mark!! Off to Thailand for a few weeks of sun, sand and surf which in fact as been closer to rain, clouds and indoors. The weather has been pretty average but we have manged to see some pretty cool stuff again and it has been really relaxing for the first part of our trip. Our arrival into Thailand was pretty typical, and one that Kris enjoyed as we have landed safely again and didn't die on the flight. Took a cab from the airport to Karon Beach on the South Western side of Phuket island where we stayed in a fantastic hotel that was in the middle of the bush, but ... read more

So sorry for the slow ending to the final installment of our 8 month trip, but here we are. We arrived into Ahmedabad on time for once, after a great nights sleep with our newly aquired blankets. It was the complete result all round!! It was nice to be picked up by our friend Harishbhai (the man who looked after us on our last trip) after once again all the special offers from the rickshaw drivers of beautiful, yet cheap hotels. Our return to the school was great as the more of the premises have been completed since our last visit. Kris and I got thrown into the deep end at our arrival and were asked to take 3 lessons in the pre-primary section where the children had a very little grasp of the English language, ... read more

If our last train journey was anything to go by, you'd think that we would have been a bit more organised this time. Well we were to a certain extent; we had out extra jackets, polyprops and socks, yet this coldness was nothing like we have ever felt in any country we have travelled in. The journey was in a freeze box for 14 hours, and that is counting the 3 hour late arrival of it. We could see our breath in front of us, and it got to the point where we jumped in the same single bed to try and warm up - much to the expressive looks from the locals. With every other Indian having draped on them possibly their total ownership of bed linen, it would have been nice for one to ... read more

We are now in India. The flight from Singapore was quite bad. As we were boarding the rain came down, and for those of you who have never been in tropical climates, the rain came down in a torrential downpour that lasted a long time. The flight took on a very bumpy ride and continued to last for over an hour. Even the pilots were surprised by the turbulence and lightning flashing around us. Kristyn almost got to the stage of giving herself the last rites, and along with my dead arm (from her hands gripping around it) I too had a few far off thoughts of the plane's wings coming off, what the brace position was and many more ideas - probably not as many as Kristyn though! You could say that this was the ... read more

Our flight to Brisbane was pretty low key. We arrived into Brisbane and got a transfer to our hostel where we bascially got some dinner then went to sleep for over 12 hours. The next day we headed straight to Byron Bay to meet up with Kristyn's cousin Tony and to check out this legendary beach. In between showers of rain and intermittent sunshine we were able to hit the beach for a few days, grab some sun and get pounded by the surf. Spent a few nights checking out the towns bars and kebab shop which got a working over. Byron Bay is a really cool place, it was just a pity the weather wasn't great. From Byron we headed north to Surfers Paradise where we stayed with some friends from our Africa trip (thanks ... read more

Well our New Zealand leg of our trip is all over. It was nice to arrive into Christchurch this time and not face the wrath of the immigration people unlike our last visit. Our first point of call was to be my sister's work place in Christchurch, however we both got a bit side tracked by the Speights Ale house and Kumara chips so ended up being a couple of hours late, and a little light-headed!! We have spent almost 6 weeks at home, and time has not stood still at all. The initial problem we were facing when we arrived home was trying to organise my return visa to the UK as my old work visa became invalid when I stopped working at school. After a long and lengthy application on the net we were ... read more

Hi there everyone! We last left you in Durban where we spent a few days before jumping on a bus to Jo'Burg. Well it wasn't a very good bus at all and broke down 1 hour into the 9 hour trip! After spending many hours on the side of the road with a few passengers freaking out about getting robbed and shot, a new bus came and we finally made it with all our stuff and no injuries! Not much to say about Jo'Burg except the Apartheid museum was awesome and it was great catching up with our fellow truckies for the last time. We almost missed our plane to Oz, that bloody travel curse is kicking in again, but managed to get to the airport on time after getting done over AGAIN for taxi fare. ... read more

Last point of contact we were in Stellenbosh. From there it was a short commute to Cape Town where our tour officailly ended. We had our final group meal down on the water front where there were a number of awards handed out - as voted by all the truck members. Kristyn won the coverted "Scaredy Cat award", while I won the "Dancing Queen" title and the 3rd "Coolest"!! What a result. We also claimed the 3rd "Most Patriotic" on the truck as well. Must've had something to do with the rugby! All in all a very successful evening. We made our way up Table Mountain for some fantastic views of the city and the Cape Point. We were up for walking back down, but after seeing numerous peoples expressions after making to the top we ... read more

After all the thrills and spills of Victoria falls we moved into Botswana, where the pace didn't really slow down. Botswana is famous for the Okavango Delta, a huge number of small waterways that move through reeds, with a great number of wide life in a concentrated area. We were taken through these waterways by Mokoro, or hollow canoes by the local people where we set up camp for 2 nights. As we arrived at our camp, there were 4 bull elephants grazing on the grass only 30 metres away!! We went for a guided walk with one of the locals around our camp and came across elephants, giraffes, zebra and came across a small lake with about 20 hippo wallowing in. They were very close to the waters edge where we were standing, and made ... read more
