Rome, Naples then Positano We definitely did not have enough time to appreciate Rome, but without unlimited time it is hard to do justice to each destination. We took the train from Rome to Naples, and then a tram to the ferry port headed for Positano. This leg of the trip proved to be a bit of a challenge for our companions, Al and Melissa. Their luggage is not as compact as ours and they had crammed a lot more weight into them which made the on and off trains and trams difficult. Lorenza and I had just scrambled onto the tram and realised the doors had closed before Al and Melissa could get on board. So, we headed toward the ferry port hoping they knew were we were going. Luckily we both had mobile phones ... read more

Up early to pack in as much as we can in the few days we are here. Walked to the nearest bus stop and figured out how to get to the Vatican. Took us forever to work out how to get a ticket for the bus, the drivers accept no money so you have to purchase the ticket from a machine, the machine is not located at the bus stop it was 500 metres down the road. So, it was a day of huge crowds, lots of hawkers and scammers, plus you have never seen so many Nuns, Priests, Bishops and other religious folk wandering the streets as you do here. We stood in line for the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museums, got talking to a couple from Cypress (Sammy and ???? did not catch his ... read more

We arrived in Rome about two hours later than expected. Al and I got very uneasy waiting for our bags. They took forever to appear on the carousel. I tried to call the number I had for the apartment we had booked and got a very nice women who could not speak a word of English. Somehow we managed to understand each other and let her know we were running late but would be there soon. We had organised a van to take us from the airport and he was great. Our first taste of Roman driving was interesting, but we found our apartment without incident. The women I had spoken to on the phone met us on the street and then led us up the six flights of stairs to our apartment. Climbing the stairs ... read more

27th September 2007 Our late arrival back to Nerja (or early morning) took it’s toll on us and we had a very late start to the day. We had planned to visit some caves in the area but that got shelved because we cold not get ourselves up and running. Instead we spent the day lazing by the pool, drinking more beers and relaxing. Lorenza and I took another spin through the town looking in a few shops. We came across one which sold some lovely Flamenco dresses, very expensive but absolutely beautiful fabric and design. Even though they realised we had no intention of spending 1500 euro on a dress the ladies in the shop were only too happy to show us the variety of different designs they sold. They were spectacular dresses, but back ... read more

We visited the Moorish fortress and palace “the Ahlambra” near Granada. This was an absolutely huge and amazing site. We toured the Moorish gardens, bath houses, palaces and a very imposing fortress, with views across Granada. After a full day at the Ahlambra we took a drink at a nearby hotel and met Jake and his wife. He had spent some years living in Brisbane, was originally from England and had now settled with his wife in a small village in the mountains near Granada. He gave us some tips on what we could do that night which turned out to be a lot of fun. We set off on foot around the walls of the fortress and made our way down to the Moroccan quarter of Granada. After navigating our way along the walls of ... read more

24th September 2007 The drive from Madrid to Nerja took us south through the centre of Spain, via dry, open country with millions of olive trees (no wonder the food is drenched in olive oil), then via spectacular granite hills and mountains. On the news we had heard that part of the Costa del Sol area had been declared a disaster zone. This was due to a huge downpour of rain and a hail storm which then resulted in some terrible mudslides. As the news report was in Spanish we were not sure of exactly where this had happened. We soon found out! When we made it to the coast we drove through some towns that were covered in mud. There were cars barely visible from the muck and lots of debris in the streets. There ... read more

21st September 2007 - Madrid Got to Madrid after transiting Hong Kong and London - another exciting international flight (yawn). Standing at the luggage carousel in Madrid airport I began to get a very uneasy feeling as all of the passengers on our flight seemed to be slowly disappearing with their luggage in hand. After about one hour of watching the same two bags doing laps on the carousel I approached the lost luggage counter with a degree of trepidation. I handed them my luggage receipts and they checked the barcode numbers to inform me in their best spanglish that all four of our bags were still in London “or we think they are”. So, we left our contact details with the lost luggage girl and set off through customs with our carry on bags. We ... read more

I had my fingers crossed for the last few weeks that our 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon would be ready to bottle before we fly out to Madrid. Luckily my wish came true and it is all safely sealed away in bottles and cellared for the next six to twelve months until it is ready for drinking. So, with twenty days before we depart I am relieved that my winemaking duties are done for the year. All that’s left to do when we return is label the bottles! So, between now and the next harvest the only work to be done is drinking and planning any minor changes to the winemaking process for 2008 - it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it! We are really looking forward to our trip ... Cheers!... read more

Some ramblings … The counter on our profile page keeps ticking over - in the interval between one trip and the next I get very restless as I am sucked back into the vortex of day to day life and saving for the next adventure. I certainly don't want to wish my life away - but waiting drives me a bit nuts! Hey, not that life back home is so bad - winemaking, fun with friends, it's all great - but that bug is biting and keeps a part of my mind wishing I was on the road. Winemaking … Now - on the winemaking front we have our Cabernet Sauvignon tucked away ageing in barrels. We also have a really interesting batch of fruit wine we are experimenting with - a blend of apple and ... read more

20/3/07 to 22/3/07 Bangkok Hot and sticky again. After our travels a few days by the pool seemed very inviting. It kind of worked out that way - we got roped into a shopping expedition with a tuk-tuk driver, but managed to escape his clutches quick enough that we only wasted a few hours with him. Lorenza indulged in some things like pedicures, a visit to a hairdresser, etc. I got myself a full body massage (with no happy ending) plus a manicure and “oh, what the hell” a pedicure. We lazed by the pool, tried some local seafood, found a bar down the street with some cold beer and avoided any more shopping. This man is a thief! We had the cab ride from hell back to the airport on our last day. We made ... read more
