17th October 2007 - Picasso and the Place des Vosges Paris was a little cool, so we found our jackets, scarves and I bought a new wool cap at the market near the apartment. The produce available looked so fresh and it was worth wandering through to check it out. Plenty of choices - pigeon, duck, lots of seafood, and plenty of meats to pick from. We had a good yack with the vendor I bought my cap from about Rugby, Australia and our impressions of France. My brain still works so slow in French and it always amazes me how hard complete strangers like this try to converse with us - the impression some people have of the French being rude is so far from the truth! Also, we bumped into an Aussie guy who ... read more

16th October 2007 - Strasbourg We took a walk around the city in the general direction of the Botanical Gardens, following the river Ill. Never made it to the gardens, but enjoyed the walk anyway. Had to try to get back to the main Cathedral before midday to meet Al and Melissa so we could get and see the astronomical clock do it’s stuff. Strasbourg is a lovely city, had to laugh at the sign on the banks of the river at a café with deck chairs set out in the sun - Strasbourg Plage (Sans la Plage), the Strasbourg Beach (Without the beach). The clock is a wonder to watch and midday and midnight are naturally the best time to view it do the business. There is a parade of figures and sounds supposedly set ... read more

14th October 2007 - The Feast of Saint Gall An interesting morning - attended a Catholic church service for the first time in many years. It was the feast of Saint Gall, one of the two Patron Saints of Niedermorschwihr. The feast was in celebration of the recent harvest and was a big celebration and family event. We attended the service out of respect for Beatrice and also Bernard (one of Beatrice’s cousins, who was also staying with them who happens to be a Priest). So, together with the family members who were at home at the time we attended the local church at 10am and amazing as it may seem the roof did not collapse when I entered. The service was enjoyable and interesting, the choir and the organ sounded wonderful, the display of produce ... read more

13th October 2007 - Colmar in search of a TV Juliette, Lorenza, Al, Jean and I climbed into the green bus and headed to Colmar. Our mission was to buy a plasma TV. Jean had been promised one for his 70th birthday and today seemed like a good day to get one because in the evening the French were to play the “Roast Beef” in the Rugby semi-final. Juliette and I joked that it was a bit like a day out in an episode from the Simpson’s, the whole family off shopping for a new TV. Melissa didn’t join us for the excursion; instead she was taken by Beatrice to a hairdresser for some colour touching up. This was a brave objective when your grasp of French is reasonably limited. We wished her luck! After studying ... read more

11th October 2007 We had hoped that we would be in Alsace in time to help with the grape harvest. Alas, this year the harvest was about a month earlier than normal. This was due to some freakish weather in about April, when an Indian summer burst on the scene resulting in the vines producing their fruit much earlier. Then, the region was hit by a hail storm, wiping out about 40% of the crop. So, by the time we arrived in Alsace the harvest was well and truly over, except for a few rows of vines which had fruited a bit later than the others. We spent about 2 hours picking roughly 100kg of grapes and that was that. Jean and Beatrice lent us their Peugeot 205 and we set about re-exploring the district, starting ... read more

9th October 2007 - Avignon I printed out the words to the song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon” so we could be childish and sing it when we found the bridge. Avignon was a lot bigger than I expected. Found the bridge and ran through a rendition of the song. We found out in the museum that people did not actually dance on the bridge in times long past, but they often held fetes and danced and drank on the banks of the river on the opposite side. So the song really should be “Sous le Pont d’Avignon” or even "a côte de le Pont d'Avignon" or something like that! We then took a look around the Palace of the Popes, which was the centre of the Roman Catholic kingdom for sometime. Afterward we found a café ... read more

7th October We found our way to Arles, via the outskirts of Marseille without too much trouble. We had received an SMS the day before from Florence. Lorenza and I were really looking forward to meeting her in person. We had originally made contact with her via Hospitality Club sometime in 2006. We had exchanged lots of emails as she had been planning to visit Australia, but circumstances changed and instead we were on our way to meet her in Arles. The hotel that Florence had suggested to us was lovely, a very comfortable room overlooking a peaceful garden, right in the centre of the old part of the town. We got settled and called Florence to let her know we had arrived. Soon after our call Florence met us downstairs for a drink. The internet ... read more

6th October 2007 - Farewell Positano We said our farewells to Positano, definitely one of the more magical places I have visited. I hope to return to one day. Melissa entrusted her box of belongings to the Italian Postal service. We made the trek back to the ferry wharf with our luggage, and it just started lightly raining. Positano was obviously sad to see us leave. Did the trip back to Rome, via Naples as before, except that Melissa wanted to skip the tram ride in favor of a taxi. Back in Rome we stayed at the Holiday Inn near the airport. This would not have been my first pick of places to stay, but we had an early flight in the morning and it was close to the airport. We had dinner at the hotel ... read more

We took a boat ride along the coast on board a fishing boat with the skipper Salvatoro. Helping out on the cruise was a funny old chook, Gloria, who was in her 70’s and originally from some where in the mid-west of the USA. Also joining us was a local photographer, Cindy, a newly married Canadian couple and an Aussie couple. The cruise took us along the coast to Ravello, stopping along the way for swimming and sight seeing. In one of the grottos we swam in the water was so clear, when you splashed it in front of you it shimmered like turquoise crystals. We stopped for lunch along the coast and the restaurant cooked up fish that Salvatoro had caught, washed down with local vino. This was such a relaxing cruise in a small ... read more

1st October 2007 After rushing around in Rome it was good to know we had plenty of time to relax here. Weather is stunning, sunny, warm and a gentle breeze in the evening. A lot of locals told us we were lucky because it was normally a bit cooler at this time of year. Wandered about the town and found some interesting shops and galleries. Got talking with a women who was expecting her first baby, she was working in a gallery with a cat called “Phillipo”. We bought a few souvenirs and gifts, slowly making our way further up the hill from the main beach. As you climbed the hill the prices reduced and it was obviously worth the effort of the climb to discover this fact. Make sure your credit card balance is in ... read more
