Today was a short but sweet day with only two stops. The first stop found Jess & I at the Kansas City Public Library to view a mural of library books painted on the parking garage. It’s a sight to see if you are in the area. Our last stop of the trip was to the Moon Marble Company in Boomer Springs, KS. At this hole-in-the-wall joint you can find a range of nostalgia and niche toys, but forget about those, let’s talk about the main attractions, marbles!!!! You can wait a 15 minute demonstration on how handmade marbles are made from start to finish. Jess & and I purchased handmade marbles made by our demonstrator, Ernie!! Nice to know we have a one-of-a-kind souvenir from our road trip! After we procured our marbles, the Road ... read more

Blog travelers, the Road Avenger has finally turned south! Yesterday was the longest traveling day of this entire trip. Jess and I calculated that today's and tomorrow's driving time combined totals yesterday's driving time. Our foot was on the pedal for a total of 13ish hours. Today's pace was much more relaxed. We rose at an acceptable hour and was on the road at 10am (just a reminder, we are still in SD at this point). We crossed the boarder of our 9th state, Iowa, to pay a visit to WinnaVegas. Casino #2!! A little gem surrounded by miles of corn and little else....ok nothing else. Had a photo opp with "ain't nothing but a hound prairie dog" played the reels and were on our way! Next stop is a little known metal sculpture affectionally called ... read more

While driving thru 8 states there have been several shapes and sizes of "clumped" grass. Jess and I have discovered that we both have an issue with the phrase "bales of hay". Today saw us rising bleary eyed and before the sun in Bismarck, ND. After my freshly made waffle, we set out to see Salem Sue, the worlds largest heifer statue. Not only did we get a photo opp with Sue, we also got a panoramic view of New Salem, ND with sunflower fields, windmills, and rolling hills. The 2nd stop of the today was the Enchanted Highway in Regent, ND. The highway stretched 32 miles with 6 different scrap metal statues ranging from geese (currently worlds largest scrap metal statue) to grasshoppers. The favorite has to be fishermans dream. Everyone, get your fist pump ... read more

The view from the Road Avenger has been a sea of future products of the husked plant such as cornbread, ethanol, fritters, glue, & chex mix. Corn fields as far as the eye can see! Today is day 3 of the Great Middle America Road Trip! Jess & I spent the night in Minneapolis, MN with several RBI Softball World Series teams. They like to practice their sprints up and down the halls in the wee hour of the morn! We had several stops in the Twin Cities, the first being the Peanuts statues in St. Paul. Yes, photo time with Snoopy & the gang! Up next was the Spoonbridge & Cherry Sculpture in Minneapolis. There was also a sculpture putt-putt course there, but it was closed. Up next was the famed Mall of America (queue ... read more

Two words, long day!!! After a 9 hour drive from Nashville to Chicago yesterday, with a pit stop in Hammond, IN at the Horseshoe Casino, Jess & I were ready to eat our Ghirardelli ice-cream and call it a day. We rose with the street sweepers to hail a taxi to taste churros, a Mexican delicacy, at XOCO. Our next stop was a swift 1.5 mile walk to the Bob Newhart statue. What we found was hundreds of sailboats and a ferris wheel at Navy Pier!! After a 30 min search, no Newhart statue was in site! Jess asked a local if he could point us in the right direction, which he in turn replied with “there ain’t no Bob Newhart statue in Chicago. If you find one, let me know”. Sad, but not defeated, Jess ... read more
