Guangzhou airport in Guangdong Province in China, July 12, 2013. Waiting for my flight to Guiyang -- a 7-hour wait -- leaving tonight at 7:30 and arriving at about 9:30. I hope that Diane and Simon will be there to meet me. If not, then I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I decided to check 1 bag because the 2nd was going to cost about 200 RMB but when I went through security, I had a couple of aerosol cans of sunscreen and they wouldn't let me through -- I had to dump the sunscreen or go back and check the second bag. I decided to go back. It was relatively painless and I managed to get back to the front of the line at security -- it was worth the wait, I ... read more

arrived in Narita Japan yesterday around 4:30 pm. I was exhausted since I didn't sleep on the plane except the last 20minutes. (At that time I fell asleep and I was the last one on the plane. The flight attendants had to come by and wake me up). I took a look at the airport terminal and thought about staying 20 hours sleeping stretched out on a bank of seats or the floor and went straight to the hotel reservations information desk and did something that is so uncharacteristic of me. I booked a relatively cheap room in a nearby hotel with free shuttle service for $64/night and came straight to the hotel...Narita Gateway Hotel. I tried to explore the area/neighborhood but we're right on the freeway -- one of those hotels typically near an airport ... read more

Today is the first day of the second week of the training program. We have a wonderful group of teachers this year who have been quite patient given the circumstances. Our materials did not arrive until thursday last week so we have been trying to piece together a program of study for this these teachers with some chapters from a teacher training workbook and some lessons and materials downloaded from the Internet. It was not exactly easy putting all this together but since the materials have arrived it's been easier to draw from some of the exercises to present new ideas for activiites. Unfortunately the program is only 2 weeks long this year instead of 4 so we will not be able to achieve all that we were able to do in the past 2 summers. ... read more

Friday, July 29, 2011 We had a public lesson morning for teachers in our program. Several teachers from the 3 different classes prepared a public lesson and presented for the entire group of teachers. The lessons were quite good and instructive for all. Both my teachers who presented did an excellent job and I was delighted. One of the teachers -- Alice, who teachers at a senior high school -- did a very creative lesson about earthquakes -- a prereading and reading activity that provided scaffolding with vocabulary and ideas in the reading to help students understand and read the text more effectively. First she presented a song or poem that made students feel an emotional response and then she showed them pictures after an earthquake. Using the pictures she elicited a personal response from the ... read more

Yesterday and today have been spent getting ready for the beginning of the program. We reviewed all the materials. Judy went over many of the games and activities that she has on file with the assistants. She has a great deal of patience and enjoys going over every game in great detail. As she worked with them, I searched for the placement test --- began to develop a new one based on years past -- and then discovered the placement test and rubric that we had developed last summer. There were copies left over and there were also copies of the criteria for rating the oral performance so we will use that rubric. After lunch we returned to our teaching site at the Lin Xian Teacher Training Center and looked through the pronunciation materials and planned ... read more

Today we met with several teachers who will be attending the program, some of whom will serve as assistants and/or advisers to our teaching team -- perhaps they will be able to alert us if what we are doing does not really serve the needs of the teachers. Most of them teach in classes of 55-90 students...this is a real challenge for them and for us. We had a really nice lunch today at the hotel restaurant --- I wish that I knew the names of the dishes but of coruse I don't. Everything here is soaked in a sauce and most of the sauces are full of sodium -- part of the reason the dishes are so tasty. We went to a tea house yesterday and I bought the pu'ar tea and have been drinking ... read more

Monday -- Visiting the Teacher Training Center our site. Setting up the materials for the program. Meeting one of the local teacher volunteers. After a very long and tiring trip on Sunday we settled into our rooms at Lin Xian Hotel. I actually changed rooms the following day to a room across the hall that smells a little better and has more light and no leaky toilet, although the sink pipes are leaking...I guess you can't have everything. There is not so much noise on this side for some reason. Maybe it's because I didn't open the window -- but this room does face the parking lot so if there is a party, e.g., a wedding there is more commotion outside the window. On Monday afternoon there was a huge wedding with so many firecrackers going ... read more

Judy Manton and I finished our TESOL symposium yesterday around 5:30 and then in the lobby of the Jing Shi Hotel at Beijing Normal University we met Wendy Wen and her husband Brad and her brother and his wife. Brad and Wendy are visiting her family during July...we left NYC on the same day but arrived different times/days...we walked to a local student canteen on campus since we had some meal tickets left over and just made it in time to get a few dishes ...then went to this place that I found in the morning for coffee and a drink. It was a pleasant evening...not to hot not to cold and it was pleasant to see Wendy and Brad in a different venue. We went back to the hotel room afterwards...not too late around 10:30 ... read more

After a lovely plane flight from Haneda to Beijing via Japanese Airline (023) -- clean seats, good headphones, excellent food (a Bento box with 9 different samples of food, sherbert mango, and icy Zero coke, with sticky rice topped off with green tea and served in a delicately colorful and charming box) -- I managed to get through the baggage claim area and customs with absolutely no problems (knock on wood) went directly to a tourist agent who looked up the hotel on the internet and (thanks to Wendy) dialed the number and immediately got directions, wrote them in Chinese for the taxi driver and then told me that there was a change booth/bank outside so I could avoid a very long line that had gathered to change money. I walked right out the door, went ... read more

We landed (AA135) from NYUC at 9:48 pm and after a civilized entry through customs - complete with free luggage carts -- I made it to the lobby which is equipped with benches long enough to stretch out on to sleep. There is an information desk staffed by young women who can't wait to practice their Egnlish and who are quite helpful. It seems that the airport is well equipped to handle overnight transit passengers. There is a cafe open with midnight snacks and a Pop Center on teh 5th floor with restaurant and planetarium and an observation deck. The highlight of my arrival, however has been the bathroom. Very clean but the best part is the bidet -- after wiping you can clean your tush -- press the button that say "spray buttocks' and you ... read more
