Today, August 16, 2010, Monday...I beginning to get the days confused...but I think it's Monday. It's about midnight here in Beijing so inNYC it's about noon. Yesterday I went to the Great Wall and the Ming Tombs. I took a tour through the hotel and the bus was full of Europeans so that was fun...there were several young men and women from Spain, a young man from France, with a young woman from Spainand another from Portugal. There was a man from Saudi Arabia and 2 couples from Germany. it was nice to speak with people from other countries. We left at around 8:15...I was the last person they picked up...drove to the Ming Tombs...we only went to see one of the tombs...and honestly I cannot tell you which one. I have to get the photos ... read more

Arrived in Beijing at about 5:10 pm. The plane was late and then I had to get my luggage. I got an airport shuttle bus to downtown Beijing and then got a taxi to the hotel The hotel is near Tiannamen Square and the Forbidden City but I didn't see either one of them. I got here at about 7:15 and then had to check in. I came up to my room to leave the bags and then went out to walk to Tiannamen Square. A pedicab driver stopped me and asked if I wanted a tour - for 180 yuan -- about $30...I said I just wanted to walk...he kept following me...$160, then $100 and finally $80. I said ok. Then he made a u-turn and kept saying Hotung...I thought he was saying all around ... read more

Yesterday we left Shilou City. The night before we had gone to a karaoke bar and I stayed up till about 2:30 doing my grades for the semester. I grabbed a nap and then then got up at 6 to finish. I turned in the grades at about 8:30....made the last of my Starbucks coffee, finished packing and was ready. By 9:00 We were all packed and waiting in the lobby, said goodbyes to the hotel girls and to Mr. Yin, the Education Bureau liaison, and loaded our things and ourselves into the van driven by Mr. Feng. The three Chinese volunteers went in another car to PingYao for a night there on the way back to Beijing. We drove the 5+ hours in the rain...it was miserable weather. Mr. Feng is indeed a good driver. ... read more

It's the last day of teaching and I began with some riddles followed by a listening from Great Ideas -- do you remember that book? That is a brilliant book for ESL..so many good listening and speaking activities. Although some are a lilttle dated now (technology is beyond land lines) it's still got some very innovative ideas. We did the unit called Once upon a time...remembering things that happened in the past. I felt completely happy about that but the students couldn't catch everything. I think they get discouraged because it's hard to catch the tape..no matter how many times I play it and how much I break it down for them. But it's good practice. In addition, we did some songs...basic songs for elementary school level -- Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Row,row, row your boat, ... read more

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 Teaching went better today than yesterday. Although we didn't have the key to my room when we arrived at the middle school and we were about 20 minutes late getting started, the class time moved at a much better pace today than yesterday. In another classroom we started off with picture descriptions..the back-to-back exercise in which one student has to explain to another student what is missing in the picture. This took about 15 minutes and was a good way to begin the class. By the end of this warm-up we had the key and were able to get back into the classroom. We then continued the powerpoint on American Holidays with a focus first on Halloween...therewas an additional powerpoint on Halloween with pictures of costumes, jack-o-lanterns and a child trick or ... read more

Monday, August 9, 2010 It was a slow day teaching today. I got completely involved in the readings and I know that the students were bored. We did a reading on the role of women that Judy had suggested and I projected it on the screen...not a good idea. I know that readings on the screen are not a good idea but I thought ok it'll be a good follow up for the reading cloze we did on the traditional family last week. But it was not such a good idea and some people were falling asleep. Then we did holidays...no activity. So overall the day was pretty boring for them...and I ran overtime. I spoke too much and they were bored and well...it was one of those days. Then in the afternoon the entire program ... read more

Today we took a trip to visit the First Circle in the Huang He (Yellow River). It's a breathtaking sight -- an incredible rocklike islandin the middleof the Yellow River. The River makes a circle around this island and it's huge...We traveled up to another peak to get the full panoramic view. Last night it rained (second time since we've been here) so the road was still too wet to drive the last part of the way so we trekked up the path to the lookout point. There was a small shrine there (apparently new -- Judy said she didn't see it there last year) and there are a couple of different lookout points. It's not a highly frequented tourist attraction -- at least not too many weigoren get there -- but there were surprisingly several ... read more

Qikou is a small town about a 6 hour bus ride from Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province. For more than two centuries, when transportation in the area was still undeveloped, the Yellow River constituted the main transportation route for commodities between Northwest and North China. Qikou served as a vital trading point marking the eastern terminus for river-bound freight. During the Kangxi and Qianlong reigns of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 A.D.), Qikou was the commercial center and commodity transfer harbor, where dozens, sometimes hundreds of boats, berthed every day. Cereals, oils, salt, furs, medicines and many other products came to Qikou on water routes from Northwest China, before being transported to other parts of the country by horse and camel. Meanwhile, silk, tea, cigarettes and liquor were transported from central China to the northwest (here it ... read more
