Wednesday, June 22, 2011 Sam’s Parking lot, Dimond Mall area of Anchorage. 59 degrees and very overcast. Starting mileage at 10287. We are currently sitting in the Sam's Club parking lot where we spent the night with a number of other Roadtrekkers. Out here in the ‘burbs there is one of every kind of store and fast food restaurant--put several Atlanta malls all together and you would have this area. Valerie took her computer and had breakfast at Mickey D's, as the signal strength here isn't good enough to upload more pictures to the blog. We chose to stay at the Sam's instead of the Wal-mart across the street, as the back parking area is on top of a Mickey D's which was fine for doing e-mail. Today is a “shopping and doing a couple loads ... read more

Monday June 20, 2011 mileage 10202 55 degrees at 11:45 when we left Black Bear campground . Walked the Trail of Blue Ice along Williwaw Creek first thing this morning. The trail starts on a boardwalk between the river and the road to Whittier. Lots of wildflowers were blooming along the trail. At certain times of the year when they are running, you can see salmon in the creek as it is that clear. On the way back to Rosie II we were stopped by a woman interested in asking questions about and seeing our Roadtrek. Soon the whole family, including a sister, whose husband’s mother taught school for 25 years down the street from where Mom and Dad lived in Lilburn. Anyway, the family is from Fairbanks and we talked quite a while. The husband ... read more

Saturday, June 18, 2011 Diamond M Ranch and RV park, Kenai Have now driven 10,028 miles. 55 degrees at 11:00 High clouds I worked some more on the daily narrative to try and get up to date and Valerie added pictures to my previous entries and posted a few to the travel blog. We both worked on cleaning Rosie II more. We had to leave the space by 11:00, so we closed things down and drove over to the bathhouse to take showers. Since it was 11:30 before we left, and we wanted to do some shopping in town, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant for lunch. We had a really good meal and took half of it home and had it for dinner. Filled the gas tank before we started out also. Since it was ... read more

Friday, June 17, 2011 Johnson Lake Sunny 64 degrees mileage 9990 to start the day Drove back up the Sterling Highway toward the towns of Soldotna and Kenai, which really run together. On the way saw another female moose and her twin calves crossing the road. Apparently around the world, all moose calves are born between the last two weeks in May and the first week of June. If the cow is healthy, then she has twins. This time Valerie was able to stop and get pictures. On the way to the Diamond M Ranch and RV park , where all the Roadtrekers were meeting, we stopped by the city docks overlooking some river marshes/wetlands to check for any ducks or shorebirds. They had a viewing platform in this area and a telescope set up but ... read more

June 16, 2011 Thursday Deep Creek Campground. Sunny looking west, cloudy and rainy looking to the east. 51 degrees out at 10:30 am. The tide this morning is the lowest for the month, at a minus 4.19 so, the beach was crawling with people out clamming. With a fishing license, free for kids, you are allowed 60 each and there is no size minimum for the clams. Hence, the beach was crawling with families with children in tow and church youth groups. One of the major problems with such a fluctuating tide is that boats have trouble getting into the water. They have solved this problem with big wheeled tractors. The boat is put on a boat trailer and towed across the mud flats and out into the water until it is deep enough for the ... read more

June 15--Homer Spit--weather mostly thick fog and rainy 52 degrees 9891 mileage.---really foggy and rained in the night. Went to local library that was really nice with all kinds of art work both inside and out. Bought an $8 bunch of books for 50 cents each. Had lunch at a bakery that we thought would have some great goodies. No such luck---muffins and cookies no pies, cakes etc. We both had a large bowl of soup for $7.00 a bowl. Stopped at a Marine Wildlife museum and looked around—they also had neat art inside. For example, they had a pottery relief sort of work of sea animals and plants about a foot or more in width that were brightly glazed around all the doors. The volunteer there suggested a drive we should take up higher on ... read more

Monday-Tuesday, the 13th-14th Homer Spit weather mostly thick fog and rainy 48-50 degrees 9859-9879 mileage. Monday---read and slept until noon. Gathered up and did 5 loads of laundry at local laundromat that had wifi. Spent almost $40 to do so, as wash was $4.00 a load and dryer was .25 for 4 minutes. Drove up one of the residential roads that curved up on the hill and saw a pheasant male run across the road in front of us. In one of the lakes you crossed, we saw a mother duck with about 12 babies. Unfortunately, there was also an eagle nest across the road and we are not sure how many of those ducklings will be able to grow into adults. Moved down the spit to another campsite with 7-8 other Roadtreks. Tuesday---Booked and took ... read more

Sunday, June 12th Captain Cook Inlet State Park partly sunny 51 degrees at 10:00 Starting mileage at 9729 The state park was named for the inlet which was named for Capt. Cook who explored this area in 1776. At various visitors’ centers we have picked up lots of pamphlets and brochures on the local area. One of the maps we have on the Kenai Peninsula gave the supposed location of places to see various wildlife. We have been driving to various locations and following their suggestions but haven’t had a one pan out. This day, we drove up gravel Marathon Road out of the town of Kenai, which was supposed to be the best place in Alaska to see the herds of caribou on the tundra there. Found the tundra, no caribou or anything else. With ... read more

June 10th, 2011 In Seward camping on the waterfront of Resurrection Bay. 50 degrees this morning and is foggy and overcast. Starting mileage is 9572. Filled up with gas at the Esso Station at $4.59 a galleon. Rosie took 17 gals for a $78.72 price. Stopped briefly at Safeway as they have Friday specials of deli lunch meat for $5. a pound and we wanted to get some more chips that were reasonably priced, but wanted to try them before we got more of that brand. Drove the other side of Resurrection Bay on Nash Road tthat climbed up that side of the bay. At a pull off we looked out and watched several fishing boats lay out nets in a big circle. Thursday June 9th Drove a block to the harbor to board our boat that was piloted by a woman Captain. The tour guide was a National Park Ranger, who is a year round resident of Seward and, therefore, was quite knowledgeable of the area’s history and of the animals and wildlife of the Park. They handed us a very nice brochure and it listed the kinds of birds and animals we were likely to see. We had a GREAT time and saw this list of wild life: • Black Bear—saw 5 of them on the hills as we boated by---one was crossing a snow patch and Valerie got a good picture of him. • Mountain goat---saw and mother and her kid way up high on the rocky cliffs. • Dall’s porpoise---a whole bunch of them played ... read more
