Day Fifteen - Ta Ra Terry, Heylo Heaven It was easy enough to get up early today despite a lack of sleep (Arsenal game only kicked off at 00.15 here...) as we were moving on to a proper island paradise, Ko Yao Yai. Terry had booked us a 9am taxi to the pier and true to form it arrived on time and we set off. We’d got twenty yards before Angela yelled “STOP THE TAXI” and jumped out dragging Leanne from the middle seat. Turns out there was no middle lap belt and all going through Angela’s head was the old elephant car advert. In truly dramatic style she selflessly took the danger seat and off we went. Arriving at Bong Rong Pier we were met by the ubiquitous touts waiting to make a profit at ... read more

Day Fourteen - Lazy Sundays are the best Sundays I’m currently watching dirty dirty Leeds beat Man Utd drinking a bottle of 50baht beer (about £1 and 6.4% - yeeeoow). The laydees are over at a spa for pedicures to help them over a bit too much sun today. It has been one of those days, terribly tough... For the record, we had a lie in this morning before having an early lunch/late breakfast. Soon after getting settled at Kata Beach, Leanne hit the water and only emerged 4 hours later. Renting an inflatable donut for 100baht was surely her bargain of the holiday. I can’t blame her though. The sun was scorching yet those lovely jade coloured waters stayed cool and inviting. Phuket was a little more appealing today as we enjoyed the beach but ... read more

Day Thirteen - Phuket, the Russian Benidorm I awoke to the sun filtering in as the train was nearing our destination. We got up around 6.30am, the staff turned our bunks into seats again and soon our breakfast arrived. It was British Rail standard but would fill a hole for now. Leaving the train an hour later at Surat Thani we were greeted with touts and eventually got sorted for our coach to Phuket. It was nothing special but had aircon and reclining seats at least. It was 4 hours later we pulled into Phuket Town and again the touts fell upon us. We needed to get to Kata but the taxi drivers wanted 800 baht - about 2-300 over the odds. With a little taxi mafia running, they were sticking to their price. We took ... read more

Day Twelve - We’ve had our oyster, bring me a beach We woke late and were unrushed today. We had a few hours to kill before we caught our train south to the islands so we again took a river taxi after a breakfast at Ricky’s. This time we took it longer down the river so we could take a small walk around the large hotel and shopping area. Everything was closed up though and we didn’t have an appetite for the hotel malls so we just looped back round to the river and headed back to Pra Athit. We are truly done with cities for now and need a break. We headed to Khao San so the laydees could see what they missed. Not much but it has cleaned up a lot. We took ... read more

Day Eleven - Happy 2553 We started with a big breakfast at Rickys before heading to the pier to get the river taxi. Some harridan tried to get 100baht each out of us for a tourist longtail but forewarned we just got the public ferry for 13baht each. We cruised down the river seeing the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun and finally arrived at our stop. We walked up to Chinatown through the Thieves Market before pausing for some much needed drinks as the sun beat down. I think the desire to yomp through cities was waning fast on everyone so we headed towards our place circling by another temple on the way and most needed, a Chinese for lunch. We also moved through a park on the site of an old prison where ... read more

Day Ten - Two Nights In Bangkok & The World’s Our Oyster... It was with a heavy heart we left Cambodia - the small taster we had was enough to convince me to return for a few weeks next time. The people are lovely and welcoming; the poverty and recent history is shocking. We took a taxi to Poipet on the Cambodian/Thai border, a shithole that is infamous for its scams on foreigners entering from Thailand. Thankfully, this isn’t as apparent on the way out as they have nothing to get from you. We crossed into Thailand across a footbridge and were swiftly stamped in and on our way over to the border market. We rested with a few ice-cold cokes before taking a Tuk Tuk to Aranya Prathet, about 15 mins away. Here we ... read more

Day Nine - Tomb Raiding with the Giant Grosvenor Girl We had arranged two tuk tuks to drive us around the Angkor site the next day. Without going into it too much, Angkor is the ancient capital of Cambodia, built from the 9th century and abandoned a few hundred years later. It spanned an area the size of modern Paris and no other city in the world was as large as it until the 20th century. Googler it, it is impressive. We first went to the pay station and I expected the same dodgy bureaucracy as Phnom Penh but was to be pleasantly surprised. Kids under 12 were free and when we produced Leanne’s passport it broke the usual icy administrator atmosphere - the Khmers all laughed and were amazed as an 11yr old Khmer ... read more

Day Eight - Khmer Kung Fu, Karaoke and Bartering over 50p As we had our tickets waiting, we were able to go for a leisurely breakfast. However, the chef was pushing mañana to a completely new level. Throwing the delicious banana pancakes down our necks we got finished in time for our minibus to arrive. As we weaved through the already crazy streets we chanced upon a road accident - a van had hit a crazy moped rider. After much waving of arms, the lad on the ground was up and away again. As we moved past it, a young girl nipped in front of our bus to block it on her scooter so she could get across the road and down a side street. I am amazed any of them get there alive but it ... read more

Day Seven - Bribes & Promenading Pachyderms The bus dropped us off in KL at around 4am opposite a 24hr McDonalds. We went straight in avoiding the taxi touts and got some coffee and juice before getting a taxi to KL Sentral. We decided to give the bus to KLIA a miss and just took the Expres train. When I was last here it didn’t exist and the airport was totally remote. Now it is much more built up all the way. As our bags were checked in from the train station through to Phnom Penh it was fairly easy getting through the airport and we had enough time for a snooze before boarding. The flight was with Malaysian Airlines and their breakfast of curry and cakes was much needed. Arriving in Phnom Penh was ... read more
