Last night was a special treat. Many of us went on the optional dinner and entertainment excursion; it was wonderful. We took a short bus trip from the hotel to the Welsh cultural center, the Millennium Center, the home of the Welsh Opera, restaurants, and other entertainment options. It is located right on the old Cardiff docks and was amazing in design. The evening began with a taste of Meade, an alcoholic beverage based on honey and developed by monks. It was sweet and delicious. Our hostess sat us right near the stage so our view of the entertainment would be excellent. The tables were set with red and white wines complimentary of the house. We were given a number of options for dinner. I chose the salmon appetizer, the beef dinner, and the chocolate cake ... read more

For those of you who have never been and planning on booking a tour for your next vacation, understand that vacation and tour are mutually exclusive. Let me explain: a vacation is a time of leisure. You get up when you want, go where and when you want, dine in casual fashion and relax. Touring not so. Touring is regimented. You will get up early; on one tour I was on there was a wakeup call at 3:30am! Most days the wake up is at 6, breakfast at 7, departure from the hotel by 8. If you are not on time, that will cause trauma and issues for the tour director and your fellow travelers. You will not be popular. Dining is delicious, unique, and fixed. You will not have a choice of menu items beyond ... read more

Before we talk about today's tour, a word about the weather. Now I have been looking for the right words to use to describe the weather in the southern part of England and the kindest word I can find is unpleasant. A more apt description would include words like wet, cold, cloudy or deeply overcast or downright miserable. Our weather has been on and off rain, cold and drab. It rains in this part of the world 1 day out of 3, so dealing with rain is a must if you are planning to come here any time of the year. This is my first summer vacation ever where I was happy I brought a jacket. I even spent money on a heavy hooded sweatshirt to accommodate! Oh well, we will persevere. After another fine English ... read more

Today we left London proper and headed off to the Salisbury Plains and the UNESCO site of Stonehenge. Our day began early: 6:15 am a wakeup call, bags out at 6:45 and departure at 7:45. We were up on time and pleased to see the weather was cloudy but dry, with a temperature forecast to be around 55. Another fabulous breakfast of meats, fruits and breads, washed down with coffee and freshly squeezed juices were enjoyed. Feeling well fortified we headed off to the bus for the 2 hour trip to Stonehenge. Unfortunately, we got off to a bit of a late start as one of our traveler's bags got lost on the trip from one hotel to the next. Fortunately for all, they found it. But we lost 20 minutes of travel time. No worries, we ... read more

Tuesday was our first formal day on tour. We had an early start to the day about 6:45 in the morning. I jumped out of bed and headed to the window to get a view of the weather conditions to be very pleasantly surprised to see a cloudy but dry day. I checked the weather and was pleasantly surprised again to see a forecast of 64 degrees and a slight chance of rain. We got dressed and headed down to breakfast. Now tour breakfasts are a feast for sure. We were treated to a full English breakfast served buffet style. There was baked beans, cooked tomatoes, sausage, eggs (powdered for sure) potato fritters, a feast of salami and hams and cheese and finally watermelon. They also had a continental breakfast area filled with many bread choices, ... read more

Our overnight flight to London was absolutely perfect. Cathy and I were treated to the exit row seat so we had about 4 feet of room in front of us, and, since the plane was configured 2-5-2 there was no middle seat. The bathroom was directly in front of us as well. Absolutely perfect for sleeping. Now, as many of you may recall from previous flights, I am often called upon to help in some medical emergency. Someone is always getting sick or dehydrated or having a heart attack. This time, the flight was quiet, no one got sick and I slept about 4 hours of the 6.5-hour flight. One thing I must point out. Before you fly, call the airline and check your food options. Cathy has some weird issues with food right now, seems ... read more

The adventure has begun, and, like all Farina vacations, it got off to a unique start. Last night, I couldn't sleep. I kept playing over and over in my mind the time and travel schedule we had planned for departure to the airport. Cathy wanted to go to 11 am mass , which ended at noon. Her plan was to be in the house by 12.30 PM and we would get to the airport by 1.40pm. That left less than 90 minutes to check baggage, pass through TSA and head to the gate. For me that was cutting it a little close. I woke up at 3.45 am. Fortunately, she was also awake, and we negotiated an earlier plan. She would go to 9am mass and be home by 10.30 am, do the final pack and ... read more

Well, everyone, it must be June and the Farina Family is off to Europe. This time we are heading to England and on to Scotland. As usual, we are using Trafalgar as our tour operator (trafalgar.com). Our tour is called Best of Britain and it is a doosey! We start in merry olde London for two nights. We will tour Big Ben, House of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and of course castles, and the Tower of London. We have a half day on our own so we plan to use the on/off sightseeing bus for a personal tour of London. From here we head off to Stonehenge and Bath in Exeter for two more nights. On the way through rolling plains, we pass through time and enter the realm of the druids and pagans for a tour ... read more

Reykjavik Final Day The weather forecast for our final day in Iceland was calling for snow. Since most of the roads we had traveled on were treacherous enough already, we chose not to head out and tempt fate with more snow scheduled to fall. We decided to intentionally sleep in a little and spend another day exploring Reykjavik. We awoke to see snow beginning to fall. The sky was filled with dark gray snow clouds, which did not allow in the sunlight. This morning was the first time it was actually twilight at 10 AM. This is what we had expected all week. The temperature had risen a bit but was still a degree or six below zero. The main roads in Reykjavik are well prepared for snow. First, they are not smooth surfaced cement or ... read more

Iceland Road Trip Day 3 Another day dawned in the most northern capital city in Europe. The plan was to get up around 7 AM and drive along the more southern tier of the Golden Circle. Good plan, but not perfect execution. We got up at 9 AM and hit the road just before 10 AM. It was a little colder today than yesterday, with a temperature forecast of -10 C. Also, we had a bit more wind to help drive the temperature down further, so we bundled up with everything we had and hit the road. Our first stop Reykjafoss in the Botanical Gardens in Hverageroi. The big attraction in the gardens is supposed to be the water falls or FOSS in Icelandic. In conjunction with that, there was a geothermal park right outside the ... read more
