Ah, Paris, incredible traffic, intolerable crowds, high prices, and people who rush for no one. We spent the last two days in Paris on our own, so we got a real feel for this incredible city. You Americans who are used to a certain pace of life, well, that is not going to happen in Europe. It is SLOW here, and that is the way it will be. The locals will not change their pace for you. Period. If you are in a rush, you need to take a step back and relax. Trying to push them will only result in frustration for all. First thing we learned was the subway system. If you plan to spend anytime on your own before or after a tour, you must master the public transportation: bus, subway, and trams. ... read more

Our first full day in Paris began with a bus tour of all the major sights of the City of Light. We visited Norte Dame whose fire in 2019 nearly destroyed this historic landmark. The church is under reconstruction and, as such, you can't get near the edifice. We were only able to view the building from a distance. The Mayor of Paris wants construction complete by 2024, the year of the Paris Olympics, which is unlikely. It will be more like 2030 if they are lucky. The Grand Dame will survive but she will need time to heal. We toured the city in comfort and visited the Eiffel Tower. (Cathy and I have tickets to go to the top tomorrow), the Luxor Obelisk, a gift from Egypt, and the former site of the Guillotine where, during ... read more

Today we bid a fond adieu to the Viking IDI and its wonderful crew. This morning at 7 AM we had to have our luggage outside our staterooms ready to be loaded onto the bus for our long day of travel to Paris. It was with mixed emotions enjoyed our final breakfast in the main dining room and said goodbye to Gianny, Yanni, and Belle. They were a pleasure to be with and a delightful addition to the voyage. One very important thing you need to do when preparing to leave the ship. Check, double check, and check one more time that you have everything you came with. There is no turning back. If you left something in the cabin, it is gone! Another important departure procedure is to pack a day bag for the bus ... read more

Today we visited the ancient city of Trier. This city was founded by the Romans and was already ancient during the Medieval era. The Romans built churches, bridges, along with a Colloseum and Baths. We started our day with a bus trip and drive around the city. Once we got to the town center, we began a 4 hour tour of the city. We visited the only Protestant Church in the city, the Jewish Quarter, and several Catholic Churches. Our guide, like all guides, was well informed, knowledgable, and kept us all entertained with stories of this interesting city. This was also the city where karl Marx was born. I kind of found that very interesting. He was born and remained here until he was 18 when he moved to England for many years then to ... read more

Our tour this morning began at 9:30 am when we would be taking a walking tour of Bernkastle, an area known for wine. The city is beautiful and boasts a population of 7,000 with 2 plus million tourists visiting annually! We visited the old city, walked through the market area, and ended at the local winery and vinyard where they have a wine cellar that features over 150 varieties of local wines. When we entered the wine cellar, they gave us a glass of Dr. Pauly wine. The story goes that the Bishop once got very sick and the local doctors could not help him. He offered a reward to anyone who could save him. A wine merchant came forth with a large barrel of wine and handed the ill Bishop a glass. Now the Bishop ... read more

Today we sailed up the Rhine River on our way to Cochem, Germany. The Rhine is absolutely beautiful. The river is wide, filled with commerce and immersed in history. This morning we were treated to our Cruise Director CJ describing for us the the names and history of the many castles along the Rhine. Many of these castles were built from the early 9th century to the later 16th century. They are high on the hills on either side of the Rhine and were much more than a place to live. They acted as lookout towers, with such a commanding view of the river below that they could see an enemy coming for many miles. They were the seat of power for the barons who lived there, maintaining dominion over all they could see. They served ... read more

Today we docked well after 7 AM so we got to sleep in a bit, just like a vacation. We are in the city of Mainz on the Main (pronounced more like Mine) River. Our plan today was a walking tour of the historic city, lunch on shore, and shopping in this most wonderful city. Mainz is a very old city that was bombed heavily in WW2 by the Allies. Much of the center city and surrounding area was blown up. What we see today is a reconstruction of the original city, recreated to its former glory as well as the reconstruction funds would allow. There was one section spared from damage; that is the area around the Cathedral. This massive medieval church holds the bones of St. Bonafice and was built as the location for ... read more

Well, it is that time of the blog for some shameless self-promotion. Some of you, many of you, and I soon hope all of you know I am a novelist. I have written a four, soon to be five book series of supernatural fiction novels. Now, for those of you who do not like supernatural fiction, before you skip ahead, let me say these are not FANTASY where the impossible happens. This is not horror, nor are there monsters, bad words, or other trappings of popular novels of this genre. They are very interesting, all based on real events, legends, or history. They do have a very subtle supernatural twist but sometimes so subtle that you might not know it happened! The books are available on Amazon or, for a signed copy, just send me an ... read more

Another beautiful restful night, perhaps becaue we are exhausted, perhaps the very gentle movement rocks you like a baby. Either way I seem to get up earlier than an alarm, ready for another day. We are at the halfway point in our journey. One disappointment came before dinner yesterday. Our Caberet Night with Dinner in Paris was cancelled. They did not tell us why, only that it was cancelled. So I booked us on an all day trip to Versaille to to see the setting of one of my favorite Netflix series, Mary, Queen of Scotts..........so that should be fun. Dan, one of our fellow travelers, gave us some excellent travel advice that I wanted to share with all. Travel today is more hectic than ever. Even with all the modern technology we have, baggage handling ... read more

Last night June 18 was my birthday. I have been fortunate enough to have spent many birthdays in Europe and this was one of the best. Viking Longships are like small floating hotels. We have a beautiful lounge, an outdoor lounge area, a well stocked bar, and a superb dining room. With a total capacity of 180, we had 140 onboard. It was spacious, not crowded, and very pleasant. If you get a chance to book a Viking River Cruise I highly suggest you take advantage. Some of the great parts about this trip is the new folks you meet along the way. Suprising, the crew become more than background. They are a rich part of the experience. Take for example our two waiters, Gianny and Yanni. (Brothers from another mother is how they bill themselves!) ... read more
