On Wednesday I had a day off, so I just stayed home and didn’t do much really. I studied some diving theory and watched a couple of films. At night I had dinner with Rachel and Carl and that was about it. Their house is in a place called Gymea, which is right next to a river and the Royal National Park, so it doesn’t feel like living in Sydney. It’s a really nice area, but it doesn’t have much access to public transportation, which is the main reason I stayed home that day. They live with a blue parrot named Angel and a dog called Splash. On Thursday I got up early to go with Rachel and Carl to the dive shop to go diving, but it was raining too much and the sea conditions ... read more

The last week I was diving almost every day. On monday, I was asked to go along with some people doing their Dive Master course (they had to do an exercise which consists in making a map of the sea bottom in a specific area). The name of the place was Oak Park, located near Cronulla Beach. There was a lot of swell which made it difficult to tie the bouys with flags to the bottom to mark the area for the map, so we got out of the water and headed to a place called Bass & Flinders and the sea conditions there were a lot better. We had time for one dive and it was sufficient for them to place the bouys and start their maps. After that we had something to eat and ... read more

Tuesday evening, María Paz Romo and I met with Vicky Fanta and Daniela Andrade. I knew Vicky from before, but couldn't remember Daniela, even though we were in the same school. By coincidence, her father taught a class I had in the Naval Polytechnic Academy in 2007 when I was studying to get my electronic engineering degree. Both went with their respective boyfriends, a chilean who works in the film making industry and a Belgium who works as a "roofer" (makes roofs in construction sites, nothing to do with roofies in case someone's wandering). They've been here for a while and, María Paz and I wanted to see how their overall experience has been. They're all living in Manly, so that in itself is a good thing. We met in a pub in Manly (big place) ... read more

It’s been some days since my last post, so I’ll try to write as much as I remember. Last time I wrote was the day after I went to “Jurassic Lounge” in the Australia Museum. That’s the problem of having let too many days pass, because now I’m having a hard time remembering what I did last week. I’ll just write about the things I do remember and work on the details after I actually post this. Mainly, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I hanged out with the same people from couchsurfing. Wednesday I stayed home during the morning looking in the web for places to stay, and in the evening I took a bus to a suburb called Maroubra, to look at a house where they were expecting me to talk about possibly moving in. The ... read more

Saturday 15th of February I was invited for lunch to Felipe Kovacic’s house in Chatswood. He’s a retired navy officer who I met briefly in the Chilean Naval School. He’s been living in Sydney for some time now, with his French wife Isa and their 11 month son, Bruno. Turns out, both our fathers were classmates at the Mackay British School in Chile, small world again. Besides me, they invited an Armenian – Iranian couple and a French couple. It was a very pleasant afternoon and after the other guests left, I stayed several more ours chatting with Isa and Felipe; “lunch” ended up at about 8 pm. After that I went back to the house I was staying in Marrickville (the retirement house now turned into a flat) and when I got there, the Valentine’s ... read more

On Thursday I took a 2 hour train ride from Sydney to the Blue Mountains. I had heard a little about them, and decided to go, not really knowing what to expect, except that it was a national park. On the way there I took the time to read the Australia Lonely Planet guide (mostly its history and then read the few pages about the Blue Mountains). The sights on the way there are totally different from what you can see in Sydney, it’s practically a rainforest. I got off in Katoomba (small touristic town) and walked down the main road (Katoomba Road), where I arrived at “Echo Point, the lookout of “The Three Sisters”, a renowned rock formation there. Of course, when I arrived, the whole valley that forms beneath the cliff was covered by ... read more

On Monday, I went to get a simcard for my iphone (can’t live without it now) and then headed down to a bar to watch the Superbowl for a while. At lunch time I got together with a friend of an uncle of mine – Marcelo Salas (for any Chileans reading this, not related with the football player). It was a very pleasant lunch and we agreed to meet the following week with 2 other people we both know. After lunch he dropped me off at Manly beach, where I took a stroll, had a coffee and then took the ferry back to Circular Quay (right in the center of Sydney). The days have been cloudy with a bit of rain – they say it’s going to be like that for most of the days of ... read more

The flight between Santiago and Sydney went smoothly, despite the fact that I had to seat in the middle seats of the middle row in economy. A short stopover in New Zealand and finally arrived on Sunday 5th of February at 7 am in Sydney. Customs went fairly quickly and when that was done, from the airport I took the train to the home of my first host in Australia, Mark Ashley; last year I joined a community called “Couchsurfing” or CS (self-explanatory name). This community is basically a way to travel and meet locals, which enables oneself to stray away from the usual tourist paths. People may offer you a place to stay, show you around the city or meet up for a coffee or a drink. It’s a great way to meet people from ... read more

(Short note in Spanish) - a mi familia y amigos: el blog lo voy a escribir en inglés, ya que así puede ser leído por un número mayor de personas. El que quiera información específica de algún lugar, me lo puede pedir por mail o a través de FB, saludos a todos. This blog exists for mainly two reasons: 1) as a personal journal and 2) so family and friends can follow up on my travels. Now down to business - at last the time has come. I had been thinking about doing long term travel for about 3 years now and finally the time has come to do it. Due to different circumstances, the idea of travelling often remains as just a dream, or something that one will do “someday”, when “the circumstances are right”. ... read more

Este es un blog en español e inglés. / This is a blog in Spanish and English (the English version is at the bottom).
