In this post I'll write about two trips: the 4 day boat ride from Lombok to Lubuan Bajo in Flores Island (including Komodo Island) and then a return car ride from Labuan Bajo to Mt. Kelimutu. I was in Gili Trawangan and I woke up late to get the boat that I had to take in the harbor; but I made it just in time. From what I could tell, this same trip (or very similar) can be booked from Lombok, Gili or Bali. There are different prices for different types of boats and I think the cheapest one is from Gili Trawangan (1.550.000 IDR), whereas there are other options going up to 5.000.000 IDR. I opted for the least luxurious and the cheapest. In Gili, all the agencies sell the same tour, for the same ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan March 13th 2013

From Ubud, I had planned to go to Lombok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lombok), an island just to the east of Bali and so I booked a shuttle bus and boat to get there, for 250.000 IDR (I booked it with Ketut, the woman who ran the hostel I was staying in). It took about 1 hour to get to the small harbour in Sanur, get the ticket and then 1 hour ride on the fast boat (a ferry takes about 5 hours, but it's cheaper). The boat stopped in all 3 Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno and Air) and then stopped in Lombok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gili_Islands). In Lombok, I was the only person disembarking and then had to negotiate a taxi to get to Senggigi, a popular beach in Lombok and where I thought I had the best chance to book other ... read more

And finally I made it to SE Asia after leaving NZ and a short stopover in the Brisbane airport. I had been in Bali in 2002, 3 weeks before the bomb attack in Kuta. I remebered it being sunnier, not as dirty and with lots of tourists and topless girls in the beach. It might just have been that I was in Bali during the high season or that I had an idealized vision of the place. This time, there were still a lot of tourists, but because it was the end of the rainy season, it was mostly clouded and partially raining. And Kuta was a lot more contaminated than I remember. I arrived at around 2pm in th airport and the first thing I did after getting my backpack was negotiating a taxi from ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Newmarket March 1st 2013

So, after my stay in Queenstown, I took a bus to Christchurch so that I could catch my flight to Indonesia the next morning. The bus left in the morning and it was due to arrive at about 5:30pm. My flight was at 6am, so there was no point in getting a hostel for the night; instead I decided to wait it out at the airport. I gave a call to Jim Worthington, a friend of Rob Hacking (with whom I had stayed in Auckland). I called him mainly to meet up for a drink and also because I wanted to return a book that Rob had lent me. Anyway, Jim asked me about my plans (I told him I was going to kill time in the airport afterwards) and he invited me to stay at ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Dunedin February 20th 2013

I got on the Inter Islander Ferry to cross from Wellington to Picton. My initial plan on the South Island was to go from Picton and travel the west coast and arrive in Queenstown. By bus it would've probably taken me a couple of days, since there isn't a straight ride from Picton to Queenstown using Naked Bus (I had a 5 ride ticket with that company), so it would've been a waste of time. Browsing in the Couchsurfing website, I saw a guy offering a car ride from Picton to Dunedin (east coast). Time and money-wise it was a far better option, so I contacted him and met him on the Ferry. His name's Ryan Everton and he turned out to be a rather interesting fellow. He just took a year off college, where he's ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves February 12th 2013

I left Auckland early in the morning and from Ignacio's house I took a train to Britomart Station. I had spent two more days in Auckland than initially intended and I needed to break the inertia and get going. I got just in time to board the bus that would get me to Waitomo. I bought a bus pass, valid for 5 rides, from the "Naked Bus" company. I had to change buses in Hamilton and arrived at around noon in Waitomo. The main attraction of Waitomo are the "glowworm caves". This is just a fancy name for larvae that glow in the dark. I had heard it was worth a visit and these larvae are endemic to New Zealand and Australia, so I decided to check it out. For more information on these "bugs", wikipedia ... read more

Auckland was a great start to my New Zealand trip. The flight from Melbourne was OK, even though I got about an hour of sleep during the night and arrived at around 5:30am. Customs went by smoothly and then I took a shuttle bus to my hosts' house: The Hackings. The family is Robert and Penny and their daughters Frances and Alexandra. Robert is a barrister and Penny is an artist who works in the Auckland Art Gallery. I met Robert while I was diving in the Great Barrier Reef and took him on a dive at a site called SNO, in Opal Reef. He introduced me to his family and offered to host me if I found myself in Auckland. And so I did. I got to the house pretty early, had a shower and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Hobart February 4th 2013

Tasmania was an excellent destination and totally exceeded my expectations. Even though I stayed for less than I had initially intended and got to see just a little bit of it, the stay there was well balanced between sightseeing and socializing. I arrived in Tasmania without much plans at all. When I got off the plane in the small airport, I saw a shuttle that could take me to the city. I had seen a few backpacker hostels online the day before, so I opted to go to the Brusnwick Hotel and book a single room. After I settled in, I grabbed my cameras and went out for a walk around the city. Hobart is the smallest State Capital in Australia and it has a “small town ambience”. There are a lot of buildings with façades ... read more

I had a really good time in Melbourne. But I don't think I did all the things I should've done, I feel as if I didn't utilize my time wisely. I think mainly because I used a fair amount of time online trying to figure out my next destinations, buying tickets and just sorting out stuff before I left Australia. The other reason is that I arrived in Melbourne without much of a plan and didn't have any ideas on what to do. I guess that I'm one of those people that has to plan ahead; not too much, but have some sort of notion on the stuff to do and the timeframes. Next time. In that city I stayed with Dave Hodges and his girlfriend Steph Stefan; excellent hosts. I met them while I was ... read more

After I left Port Douglas, I flew to Sydney, mainly to do a few dives, catch up with friends and get organized to travel for the rest of the year (main thing was that I had to loose baggage). I stayed the first days in Sydney with a couple that I met while I was working for “Poseidon Reef Charters” in Port Douglas; Ben and Naomi, two professional divers that have been traveling the world the past year and are going to keep at it for the next few years, so it seems. Ben’s a Canadian dive instructor, part musician/writer and Naomi's an Australian Divemaster and full time artist, her website here: http://www.naomigittoes.com/. The day they went out on Poseidon I was leading the dive and that’s how I got to know them. After the dives ... read more
